By Daz Go To PostCan't find an Eames Lounge chair for anything less than 650 Brexits…
lol even the knock offs on Amazon are north of 650
lol originals and new ones sold by Herman Miller are $5.5k+: https://store.hermanmiller.com/living/lounge-chairs-and-ottomans/eames-lounge-chair-and-ottoman/5667.html?lang=en_US&;
I had never heard of the brand until this thread and looked them up and my wife and I got a good chuckle out of it. Ridiculously priced.
Y'all should embrace your midcentury modern gods.

My dad has two original from his dad.
I will grab them when he's gone.
Nice furniture is expensive af. I was lucky my grandparents bought a lot of nice things i will inherit. My grandpa logged all of his purchases and i nearly fainted when i saw what he spent on them.
It's not easy to understand but the reason IKEA shit kinda looks like this nice midcentury modern furniture but isn't is literally down to the materials and craftsmanship used.
A nice bamboo desk (which I just got!) is great and affordable, looks legit, and is a huge step up from a plywood desk with veneer, but it's still not a proper real wood desk.
Same goes for furniture. The difference between walnut veneer vs real walnut, or other types of wood like real walnut vs rosewood vs teak that actually requires being taken care of is night and day. But it's difficult to express until you've seen it in person and used it.
The other reason real wood furniture costs so much is because it requires a lot of man hours to actually build and it's far more delicate to work with than plywood.

Good furnitue requires craftmanship. Craftmanship is expensive. It's not too complicated. And if you value that craftmanship and pay top dollar for your furniture is all up to you. And as Dipro's statement already made quite clear, good furniture will last you generations. It's just that modern day consumers are longing for something new and fresh rather quickly. So we usually choose to not spend a fortune on certain items since we know we will dispose of them sooner rather than later.

Materials are a huge reason real furniture costs more. It doesn’t justify the increase though. At least not always. I’m fairly crafty. I’ve toyed with spending money on a workshop and trying to make my own, but I ain’t got enough time in life to learn that craft tbat well lol
By Fenderputty Go To Postbut I ain’t got enough time in life to learn that craft tbat well lolBut that's the thing!
As the old adage goes, it's not about the time involved to determine how much to charge for something, but all the years of education and hard work put into it to get someone to become an expert at what they do.
Want to do something for cheap? Invest the time into it to do it yourself. Want someone to do it at the quality you are seeking to do it for you? Pay up because you are paying for their craftsmanship
i got into furniture refurbishing for a while and i bought a lot of run down stuff and made it look decent again.
it's not that hard and going to thrift shops to find a nice piece is fun.

Yeah but you can get real wood furniture that looks mid century modern for half the cost of that chair. At some point you’re paying for status rather than the craft
The Eames chair is an icon in the midcentury world. Yea, you are paying for the status but it has heritage. If you care about such a thing, you pay for it.
Strong emphasis on it being a replica. It feels and looks great, but it isn't perfect. You can tell that the leather is nicer on the real one, but the step up in cost vs the step up in quality means that I'm unlikely to get a real one any time soon
pretty sure I just robbed kibner's crib in tlou
also 5k for a chair YO stop, not even if it was made from Zabo's skin by Zabo.

Inherited a Craftsman/Mission style recliner that's comfy af and lasted a while. Some other pieces too. Treat some expensive furniture well and you get decades out of it.

Yeah that’s beautiful. Ironic too since these spaces are not designed for home theater
By Daz Go To PostI guess all this stuff was made before planned obsolescence became a thing.Eh there's plenty of crap furniture made in the past too, you just aren't going to run into it.

I feel like there was less veneer. If it’s real wood it can be stripped and refinanced. Leather can be redone etc.
Veneer is usually trash in a couple years
There's plenty of old shitty veneer. Those get trashed too since you can't do shit with them because there are actual layers of it. I know this because I dealt with it years ago when we were throwing out some of my grandparents shit and a lot of it was old. Point being some pieces have great bases but still shit on top and unless you're willing to spend that much time and energy to cut a custom top (or exterior) piece fuck it.
Returned one of my PS4 Pros today to Best Buy and took a look at the UHD section. Got some discs on sale, including Aquaman.
Holy fuck what a visual showcase for HDR and 4k. The movie was ok, but for discs to show off UHD+4k+HDR it's got to be near the top. Missing the surround/Atmos setup, but my sound bar was hanging in
Got 1917 as part of the haul. Gonna watch that tomorrow.

Interesting video. In the video he goes into the manuf process of the glass of large TVs, and why they're getting cheaper.

Linius, are there any entry-level-but-not-shit floorstanding speakers you'd recommend? 5-inchers will do fine. My brother is looking into upgrading his TV setup and I've only ever researched and listened to bookshelf speakers and studio monitors.

Yeah, I think he'll want to even further down the entry level ladder, heh. Will look into those for sure tho, thanks.
He's not sure yet, this is going to be his secondary setup and with furniture, TV, receiver, left + right + center + sub on the list of things to buy, he's not going to spend big on speakers. If I had to guess, I'd say 200€ per speaker max.
He's adamant about floorstanding speakers, which complicates things a bit, but if there's nothing decent in his price range, or if the receiver requirements to run them properly are too high, he'll probably change his mind. I'm just trying to get an idea what's out there.

With that kind of budget I can really recommend our in house brand actually -> https://argonaudio.com/products/alto-55-mk2-passive-speakers
Luckily we have a seperate webshop for it these days, so it can be ordered from pretty much anywhere afaik. And there's a matching center speaker and bookshelves for the rears as well. I use the Alto 4 (smallest bookshelf) myself in my bedroom as a secondary stereo set-up.
My folks are giving me a Sonos Arc soundbar. My dad was given it through work, but decided he doesn't want it.
I had been leaning towards filling out my actual surround setup, but it's hard to argue with free. I've heard it's meant to be very good (for a soundbar?)

Even for a soundbar Sonos is just not that good. Their marketing is on point though. When it comes to multiroom soundbars the Bluesound Pulsebar and the Denon 716 will blow it out of the water. And likely more than just those, but these are the brands I work with besides the Sonos.
Even the Arc? I've heard the Playbar and Beam and wasn't hugely impressed, but reviews for the Arc seem to have been much better.
Either way, it was free, so I'm more than happy with the price v performance

I will probably be getting a new TV next year, if my finances are doing well. Is there a new display tech on the horizon that is even better than OLED?
