in what world is it a good idea to hand the keys of your struggling franchise over to a bunch of guys who have literally never done the job before–especially when your club is in a terrible position in regards to assets.None of them have triangle experience. The minute Phil became a consultant everyone knew the old Bulls/Lakers coaches were coming and some coach Phil could puppet would be hired. You keep referring to this as the same situation as Kidd and Jackson; it's not. Think of it closer to when Larry Bird coached Indy and Rick Carlisle and Dick Harter were the offensive and defensive coaches, Bird oversaw everything while Carlisle and Harter ran the O and the D. In this case, Phil is practically the coach during training camp with Fisher his assistant while they implement the system. When the regular season starts, Fisher elevates to glorified assistant coach while the other experienced assistant coaches help him along.
Brad Stevens was a good young hire. Both Kidd and Fisher are clown shoes. And it's no shock that two of those clubs are in fucking miserable situations moving forward in regards to assets while the C's are stacked with draft picks.
Look, I'm not applauding this hire since Fisher was a huge dochenozzle as a player. But I'm not going to pretend he's not respected in the locker room (how I dunno), or that Kerr wouldn't have been in the same coaching situation as Fisher. People are freaking out over the money, in which the market was set by Jackson and Kerr earlier.
Is Fisher gonna teach Melo how to throw an elbow in somebody's junk/face?Shit all he has to do is watch Kobe, Bynum or even Chalmers.
Jazz apparently don't like Smart (what the fuck) or Randle (I'm good with this).
Going to be Vonleh, Exum, or Gordon. Please be Exum, please don't be Gordon.

There's a snowballs chance in hell the Jazz draft and keep someone who had the antics of Smart last year.. for better or worse.

you have no idea how hard coaching is do you, especially at this level where guys are getting aten up even with decades of experience
Kidd was just running practices and coaching a bunch of vets to beat a team he'd beaten as early as three years ago as a key cog. He wasn't hired to help develop a program. There's a very good chance he won't be around once his team isn't made up completely of vets.
Fish is walking into a situation where he has young talent. He has guys like Shump and T-Hard that need actual development. He's never done this. The "I want players with triangle experience" is the dumbest fucking thing ever for a couple of reasons. For 1, it may not even be an offense that's relevant to todays basketball anymore. For 2, it's a fucking simple offense to learn. You don't need guys to have played in that offense their entire careers as baseline for your coach.
Does he have leadership abilities? Yea. But if he was so well respected why was he booted out by his peers? He was close to the top in regards to negotiations when the players got their shit ate up by the owners--who are now selling their organizations for triple the reported rate.
Lets also look at the fact that the Phil Jackson coaching tree fucking sucks. Guys that have sat on his bench and--ya know, actually coached before have generally struggled.
"How's that for analysis?"

Dolan just guaranteed 85 million for Phil and Fish. He's not firing them in 18 months and eating that salary just because they're mediocre, and Phil won't fire Fish unless he's a total trainwreck.
So no, that's not going to happen.
The triangle is not simple to learn. That was the whole running narrative for Rambis's two season on the Wolves bench. It's not structured enough for guys to just pick up.

I'm not entirely sure what you're arguing here. His assistant coaches aren't good head coaches? Sure. The NBA history books is filled with lots and lots and lots of assistant coaches that are promoted to head coach and flat out suck. They don't have the leadership qualities or the respect or the ability to manage their locker room. That's not just Phil's guys. John Keuster anyone?
The most famous Pop coaching tree disciples are Mike Brown and AVery Johnson and Vinny Del Negro. Three Coaches who were given very talented teams to coach, but who aren't good coaches at all. So what's your point.

In this timeline, the character assassins of the NY media will make the world forget Phil ever won a damn thing if it looks like they're missing the playoffs 3 seasons in a row. Heck, two. The knives have been out since the day he got there. He's not going to ride Fish into the reputation grave. You'll see rumours like "Phil really wanted an established coach after Kerr fell through but had to settle for Fish, but now that coach X is available..." get floated in the media really fast if Fish flounders. And the fans will believe it too.
And LOL pt. II @ thinking this is really Phil's show to do as he pleases. Dolan's already flexed on him, he will continue to do so.

It's the Eastern Conference Dude. If Melo stays they'll make the playoffs next year. I'll avatar bet you. If he doesn't, everyone will know that had nothing to do with Phil, and had everything to do with previous administrations relegating this team to cap space and draft pick HELL.

I don't get it. Melo had a career season this year, the East was shittier than ever because everyone was tanking for this crazy draft, and the Knicks still didn't make it. What's going to change next year? The PJAX aura will float them into the playoffs? The East will be better, Melo won't be in a contract season and Chandler will be that much closer to falling over the ability precipice he's already up against. Knicks aren't signing anyone this summer.

So take the bet.
Also, I forgot Doc. Ok Pop's coaching tree has produced exactly ONE really good coach. And a bunch of bad coaches that just got lucky with super stars on their teams.
If we're using coaching tree as a metric, than Pat Riley is the GOAT Coach. JVG, SVG, Spoelstra are all his guys.
For the record, I'm not saying the Fisher hire is a good hire. But I'm saying it's not identical to the Kidd hire at all.
What started as a joke has become a real thing.
How could we hate you, NY Knicks? So much joy you have brought us over the years!

Thibs is like Riley's grandson if you keep the tree going
Derek Fisher has no idea how to coach, how is this a good hire for any situation a team may be in?Neither did Kerr, Mark Jackson, Jason Kidd, and Mike Dunleavy. Also regarding the coaching tree, you can be a good assistant coach and a BAD head coach. League is full of those guys historywise.
When Kerr is fired before Fisher you will hate me. It's amazing that the Kerr hire makes much less sense, yet no one remembers talking shit about it.

Why would I hate you? I don't think Kerr is a good hire either. If I have to make a guess I'd say Kerr is worse actually.

The New York Knicks - where Lamar Odom coaching JR Smith is the recipe for a winning culture.
Btw Dunleavy was an assistant coach with the Bucks (and even suited up for them for a total of 7 games between two years) before he replaced Pat in LA

I wonder who's gonna bring David Blatt over. I think he'll be really good if he gets some time to learn the league under a good coach like Carlisle or Thibs.
I'm not worried about the Fisher hire. The knicks are literally just trying to change the culture around the organization and Fisher is the right kind of personnel needed to accomplish that.
Fisher is a young coach who is familiar with the Triangle and can be mentored by phil while learning the ins and outs job. Considering the knicks weren't a playoff team this year, a FO/coaching reboot is a smart idea. If it will work is too soon to tell since we have no idea what other moves the knicks are planning this FA/Off Season. But its clear the knicks are a team in transition.

Can't even feel anymore bro.
Gonna have to watch HS highlight reels and hope he learns how to stop being a bitch a running away from the ball...or dribble...or finish.
thats a lot of money to throw at DFish, but Phil probably wants a guy who will be an extension of himself. a coach with credentials isnt going to be as pliable.

cool, just the other day i wondered why European coaches get no real shot at taking over an NBA team, I don't see how a successful european coach would be more of a gamble as a player with no coaching experiences.
Ford has the Magic taking Vonleh over Exum because they can get a "point guard" in LaVine at #12. Which is, uhh, fascinating, but would leave Exum to the Jazz which would be nice.
Fun stat for Faze, LaVine and Early had the fewest successful drives (drove to the basket and made a dunk or a layup) to the rim in the half-court of any perimeter players in this draft.

Cleanthony still averaged 5 free throws a game despite shooting 5 three balls a game though. Not worried at all about that figure. Kids going to be a stud.
I'll admit LaVine definitely has some developing to do but most of my concerns with him are on defense. He had terrible awareness/effort on that end. Offensively if he works on his handle he'll be awesome...
Exum is so overrated..

The concern is probably their ability to communicate with their players effectively. This is the second highest level of competition in basketball so they obviously can coach. Probably better than most college coaches.
OI'm still fucking mad that Fisher is a head coach in the league.
Fuck Phil. Pat Riley will go down after the smoke fades as a better coach and a better President.

you been watching a lot of Aussie basketball Faze?
I've only seen a few complete games of his but I was really really annoyed by him not going to college. It would have been a fantastic opportunity to see the potential of his halfcourt game due to having to deal with the shrunken court spacing. His ability to get to the rim overseas is irrelevant to me until he proves he can do it against the trees in the NBA. He's explosive but not so explosive that I'm sure he'll live at the rim. And unlike a guy like Wall he doesn't have a point guards mentality or elite vision to play full time point guard.
I actually think Gary Harris is a safer pick.
