Correct me if I'm wrong, but the story I heard was Kerr accepted the job contingent on the Warriors job not becoming open and when he got it, Phil let him out of his obligation.
Kerr's contract set Fisher's contract market-wise, but the Knicks didn't hire Kerr because they refused an extra year (it was never an issue) it was that Kerr wanted to stay in Cali.
Fisher made $1.4 million last year with OKC.
Brooks makes about $4 million/year for coaching a team to the WCF in 3 of 4 years, and that's Fish's first contract?

Dolan doesn't care about money. Whether it's 3M or 5M a year, it's a shit load of money either way no matter. My problem is that coaching salaries have been put on a pedestal by other teams that have driven the values up, so now teams like the Knicks have to compete and shell out. Fisher is also a Californian, don't forget. They had to make it worthwhile for him
I am rather content with the assistant coaches, though.

Fisher is literally the luckiest role player in basketball, eclipsing Horry.
Drafted in the same team with Kobe and Shaq.
Got elected to NBPA and won a fight against Billy Hunter and kicked him out.
Played until 40 and then get paid $25M to coach for his former coach.

Prior to signing a five-year, $25 million agreement to coach the Warriors, Steve Kerr made a verbal commitment to become the next coach of the Knicks, according to team president Phil Jackson (via Chris Herring of the Wall Street Journal).http://nba.si.com/2014/05/30/steve-kerr-verbally-committed-to-knicks/
Both franchises had been openly courting Kerr prior to his decision. In order to entice him, New York reportedly extended what had previously been a three-year offer (with a team option in the fourth year) to a prospective four-year deal. Whether Kerr committed to the Knicks at that point is unclear, though there was enough of an agreement in place that Jackson told forward Carmelo Anthony that Kerr would be the team’s next head coach, per Herring.
When asked why he believed Kerr opted for the Warriors over the Knicks, Jackson posited that the location of the team and quality of its roster were a better fit for Kerr.
Yeah, so it's like I said. He never turned it down cuz of the years, he wanted to be in Cali. Kerr was signaling this way before taking the Warriors job, too.
Phil came out and said Kerr asked him if he could take back his agreement cuz Kerr would have coached the Knicks and Phil let him out as a friend.

What you quoted doesn't counter what i stated at all.
In fact, it lends more weight to it.
NY came after Kerr first. They offered him a 3+1. GSW came in much later, after contract details were being finalised, and offered him a straight up 5. NYK only increased that to 4, despite Knowing that Kerr (and Phil) wanted a 5 year.
There were other factors that obviously help. Kerrs daughter being in cali, better team, no dolan, etc.
Supposedly the contract would have been long signed by Kerr if the NYK had just offered him the 4 locked in years straight up too. Lulz.
Kerr commiting to the Knicks verbally proves it wasn't about the 5th year. Once the Warriors gave him the job, he didn't ask the Knicks to match. He simply wanted to stay in Cali.
Kerr was also willing to commit to the Knicks at 4 years if Phil asked him to not leave...

Additionally the Knicks will likely bring in Kurt Rambis and Bill Cartwright as assistant coaches, with Rick Fox, and Luke Walton also being in the mix. The Knicks will host a press conference on Tuesday officially introducing Fisher as the next head coach.Fisher is gonna be insulated as fuck. Phil in his ear, Rambis and Cartwright on his side. Knicks expected to also retain a few of their assistants also. Wonder if Herb makes the cut/Ewing gets a call?
This means Melo is out and the Knicks are forced to rebuild right? Today is going pretty well then.
Masterchief edition, rainbow six and a forced Knicks rebuild. Very happy so far lol.

Cartwright and Rambis were both lousy coaches. Maybe they're decent as assistant, but I don't think it's a plus that they're in his ear.

So basically if it was a choice between 4 million a year on the Knicks and sitting at home doing nothing in Cali, he'd stay home?

Man Hornacek was such a good hire. So happy the suns hired him and not someone who just retired
I hope Quin Snyder is at least decent or that would be more painful.

Yea i really think you gets let him slip through your fingertips. Longbardi the suns defensive coach is fantastic too. damn, if the Bucks are smart enough to take Jabari at #2 over Wiggins then the Sixers could be fucked. Wiggins will be a major bust and it's possible that MCW will reveal his true form as soon as next year--that is to say that he fucking sucks. The good news is they'd at least have Noel who is a stud. So not all is lost.
Exum over Smart would be a ridiculous blunder as well for the Magic.
Jazz are stuck with a bunch of good but not great guys all over the roster. They should get Smart regardless of having Burke/Burkes but will end up going for need.

If you're loling and rofling at that statement, I don't think you watch Miami play.Bosh is the best PnR defender in the league and a decent rim protector.Dragic wouldn't start over Kyrie or Wade unless he was putting up 26 and 12 or something ridiculous–just not popular enough.
I wouldn't mind seeing Nash ball 2.0 in Phoenix. Melo at the 4, Love at the 5. It would work in the East because they wouldn't have to kill themselves every night. In the West they'd have nothing left by playoff time by how hard they'd have to work both ends every night. Still though, a bulked up love at Center is interesting. With both Melo and Love forcing the defense completely away from the paint it would really hope things up for Dragic.
Contrary to popular belief you could still protect the rim by playing a Miami Heat kind of game–Flushing the paint with doubles, some soft zone defense, switches on PNR, etc…you'd give up perimeter shooting but you can do enough to be average defensively this way and that's all you'd need with such an elite offense.
Melo can play D when he wants to. But love is just Bad.
And the whole reason the Miami D works is because the bigs they do use, Bosh / Birdman are very good defensively. Bosh means so very much to them on defense. Love just can't play extended small ball 5 because of that.
Well, i can't see it working and the team doing it, being very successful.
The era of Giant 3's playing 4, Melo/LBJ/Durant to an extent. Sure. But they're all covered by very good defenders to boot, Bosh, Chandler, Ibaka.
Until Love solves that, i'm not sold on him being a franchise all in, player. A max? sure. Franchise? eh………
Melo never wants to play D and that is the problem…
And Bosh covers for noone the Heat have been looking for a defensive big since they colluded to make the big 3
Miami hasn't been looking for a defensive big either. We stopped running two traditional big lineups once we figured out how awesome small ball was with Bosh at the 5 during the '12 playoffs. The only big Miami was searching for was one with hands, Joel Anthony was good defensively but he had ghost hands, then came Birdman. The only reason we picked up Oden was to put a big body on Hibbert but he wasn't a problem this year.
Joel, Birdman, Oden.. all signed during the Bosh era.. and best PnR big in the league? LOL decent rim protector? ROFL..
And Joel predated Bosh.
I have watched Bosh his entire career.. and good defender was never a label used for him. However, him being as moble as he is doesn't allow him to be helpful in the Heat's PnR D.. Maybe he does get shat more than he deserves but pretending like he a good rim protector is laughable and you know it.
You are right Joel was on the team before the big 3.. but the Heat have always been trying to find ways to get more help protecting the rim.. Because if a team does beat the trapping D noone can really protect the hoop that well..
Bosh led the league in least points allowed when defending the Pick N Roll(0.53) and the rolling bigman doesn't score 74% of the time when Bosh is defending the pick n roll because he's mobile enough to trap and recover. So yes, he is the best pick n roll defender in the league. He wasn't much of a defender in Toronto so I can only guess that you're remembering him from his time there.
The Heat have the best defensive rotations in the league. The roller is essentially doubled if not tripled at all times when he has the ball. Yes, Bosh is fulfulling his role well, but a lot of bigs would look good with that level of help.
I can't believe that the Knicks and Wolves have a strong possibility of making the Isaiah and Kahn eras look like paradise in comparison to what might be coming next.

Worst part about the Knicks press conference is that Mills had time at the podium.
Why the fuck is that fucking idiot still employed?
Kicks hired a punk flopper as a coach as apposed to somebody with experience.
Do a sign and trade with Melo so the Knicks can get something back so they can compete for the lottery this year.

The whole point is Phil wanted a young coach he could mold. Both Fisher and Kerr never coached, but had PG experience running the triangle. No one even thought of hiring Kerr before Phil was interested, much like Fisher (hi Lakers), and both have off the court NBA experience (Kerr as GM and Fisher running the Players Union). Both are well-respected by the players, and both were going to be Phil's puppet for at least the first 3-4 months of the season.
Yet the way it reads Kerr is going to be Red Auerbach and Fisher is the 2nd coming of Isiah. Jesus Christ at some of you .
and if I was a Warriors fan I wouldn't talk shit.

in what world is it a good idea to hand the keys of your struggling franchise over to a bunch of guys who have literally never done the job before--especially when your club is in a terrible position in regards to assets.
Brad Stevens was a good young hire. Both Kidd and Fisher are clown shoes. And it's no shock that two of those clubs are in fucking miserable situations moving forward in regards to assets while the C's are stacked with draft picks.

This is so fucking dumb.
So Chad Ford is saying the Kings are looking to trade their #8 pick for someone who can help them make the playoffs and he has their targets as Dennis Schroeder and Brandon Knight... What? Isaiah Thomas is twenty times as good as either of them and the Kings could easily get someone like Taj Gibson or Omer Asik if they really were interested in winning. Either Ford is talking out of his ass or the Maloofs never left.
