New Year. Old games. I made this thread as a gathering spot for everybody (i.e. me) who has an outstanding backlog, and wants to try and clean it up. I've got a backlog all over the place. A bunch of steam games and even more on PS4 and Xbox. What I'm going to do is start from the top of my Steam library (A) and work my way down. I have the right to drop a game no matter the time spent on it, if I feel it's shit. The point is to at least load it up and play. Here's the top of my Steam library
As you can see, I've already installed ABZU. Plan to main one PC game and one console game. On console right now that's the SP of CoD WW2 on Hardened.

2017 was a pretty good year for clearing out backlog...but then I got a bunch of new stuff over Christmas and I'm back at square one.
Here's an initial goal of 10 games for the next 5-6 months:
Steins;Gate 0 - platinum
Danganronpa- platinum
Guacamelee - beat last boss
Nier Automata - finish all routes
New Super Mario Bros - finish, not sure if I feel motivated to 100% it.
Rez Infinite - I should be able to platinum this
Assassin's Creed: Origins - finish
Shovel Knight: Spectre of Torment - I have no idea how I haven't finished this yet
Shadow Dancer - finish
Shinobi III - finish

My backlog is getting close to 470 games by now. I'm starting to lose hope. I mean I like reading/watching those backlog clearing articles online but they never seem to motivate me to do squat.
Anyway, I dunno if it's gonna be of some help to you guys but I'd just like to share the backlog clearing method that I mostly adhere to:
1. Define what a finished game is (for me beating the main campaign is enough)
2. Organize your backlog (Personally I use Backloggery and Howlongtobeat for this one)
3. MP games are not included in the backlog
4. Discard/sell/trade/donate games that are no longer fun to play (Konmari method)
5. Only play 2 games at a time (preferably one is a short game and not of the same genre to prevent burnout)
6. It's okay to play games on "easy"

Actually just started Cuphead so I'm gonna add that
PC - ABZU/Cuphead (Play Anywhere)
Console - CoD WW2 Hardened SP, Cuphead

Guys those games are in your backlog for a reason. Play the stuff that actually interests you enough that you wanna play it, not cuz you're like "oh shit I bought 500 games I never played"
By RobNBanks Go To PostGuys those games are in your backlog for a reason. Play the stuff that actually interests you enough that you wanna play it, not cuz you're like "oh shit I bought 500 games I never played"Yep pretty much my thinking. I've given up on clearing backlog and still buy games regularly. That and usually multiplayer games end up taking my time anyway. Like right now I can easily get a full squad for division so I'm always on that now.

do you tell people they're fat for a reason, so stay fat and keep eating what you enjoy :x

Some games you've just got to admit either last longer than the amount of fun they have in them, haven't aged well (will I ever go back and finish Chrono Cross? Maybe not) or just were never that fun to begin with.
But others you just get sidetracked in or needed a break from, but are totally worth going back and finishing. Like, I just played 40 hours of Nier in a week, I'll get back to it soon but it's not the worst thing letting that one breathe a bit. Guacamelee is great and one of the main reasons I got my Vita (it looks astounding on that OLED), but I just need to summon up the willpower to go at that last boss for 20 minutes until he's done.
So threads like this are a good excuse to give you some structure to go back and clear stuff out that might otherwise sit forever.
I think I'm going to tackle these 2 for the week.
Uncanny Valley (3 hours)
Adventures of Pip (6 hours)

Prey
The Witcher 1
Morrowind
AC: Origins
Metro Last Light
Ori and The Blind Forest
Ryse
FEAR
Portal 2
Fable: Aniversary
Tomb Raider Reboot
Sleeping Dogs
Bioshock 2
Since I’ve started playing it again recently, maybe I’ll actually finish Skyrim this year too.

I think gears 3 was the only one with 4 player coop
4 should have 3 player coop at least since JD Del and Kait are always on screen

It should but it doesn't. :(
E: I re-downloaded the game on pc last night so I can talk to people and play at the same time. I'm pretty sure it is cross platform in coop.

I did just about everything in Nier. Only one ending left, which you get for beating *super secret ultimate boss* but you have to find every weapon in the game, max them all, then be like level 90 to do it. I'm about 20 levels off, so I'll just wait for the DLC to go on sale and level up through that rather than hours of pointless grinding. For now I'm calling it done.
Oh, hey. I forgot about this thread. I did clear Forza Horizon 3 from my backlog! Well, at least all that is rational, anyway. I beat all the "story" races in all the expansions.
I finally cleared Persona 5. I started it on Day 1 last spring and got to near the final dungeon a month later. Then I stopped playing entirely until a couple weeks ago. I finally decided to sit down and finish the game. It was glorious. The ending was terrible, but the majority of the game was great and stylish.
I have literally like 1,000+ games in my backlog spanning back to the Magnavox Odyssey 2. However, I'm trying to focus on a few games at a time now.
I'm currently thinking of starting and finishing:
1. Firewatch
2. Unraveled
3. Vanishing of Ethan Carter
Anyone finished these games and can give me opinions? They all seem pretty good, but I'm in the mood for a short gaming experience that is relatively fulfilling. I don't have time for a Horizon, Persona 5, or Witcher 3 type game. Thanks!

I really need to get back to and finish What Remains of Edith Finch. It is supposed to be a great, though short game. I really enjoyed what I played of it.
By Smokey Go To PostI did start ABZU before Halo 5 MP sucked me back in.It is. There is practically no challenge to it, but that's ok. You just swim around, look at the scenery, maybe do some tricks with the fish, ride them around everywhere, etc. I might go back to it and try to find the other collectibles I'm missing so I can unlock more title screen stuff.
Game was pretty relaxing from what I played.
I'm also trying to make dent in my backlog this year. Goal is to finish at least 26 games this year. Right now, I'm almost done Splatoon 2 and Hellblade. Next, I'm tackling Kingdom Hearts Final Mix. I got started on that one near the end of the year but I only got to Traverse Town.
I still plan on buying new games this year, but I want to try and only buy games if I will immediately play and finish them though, that way they are backlog neutral. We will see how that works out though.

I enjoyed it. But after reading threads everywhere and online reviews of how it moved players into tears... I must be a dead robot inside or something. It's a good and unique game, but it didn't move me profoundly.
Then again, I have trouble with Nier: Automata as well. I really wanted to love this game, but... I just don't find it as amazing as everyone says. The story doesn't amaze me or resonate with me. I like 2B a lot, but dislike 9S. I haven't finished Route B. And the gameplay is not as in-depth as Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, etc.
I'll try again sometime.

A game experience isn't the same for everyone that plays it.

Similar with Nier. If you don't like a game, I wouldn't bother trying to finish it just to say you finished it. Don't let other people's opinions make you force yourself to play something that just isn't doing it for you. Write it off as a loss and move to another game, imo.
e: for example, I will not ever beat FF VII. I wanted every playable character to die except Red XIII and Aeris (who was already dead). I put more time than I wanted into it (20 hours) but it just didn't jive with me.

Walking Dead 2
Those are the only games on your list that I've played through, I liked them all. Gone Home is only 2-3 hours long, Walking Dead 4-5, and neither involve any real form of difficulty, so those are good places to start if you want to knock a couple off early.

The gameplay's definitely not as in-depth as a character action game, but it isn't one. It's an rpg, so compare the combat here to something like Dragon Age or Diablo or any old school turn based jrpg. Suddenly it seems a lot more palatable.
As for the narrative - look at the game as an exploration of all the reasons people kill, and are killed. As well as what constitutes being alive in the first place. Some of the situations you encounter are horrifying when you realize these are things that really happen to people in this very world we live in, and have throughout history. And think about the role the designer is making you play as an android with limited free will, forcing you into doing things that you normally wouldn't bring yourself to do. These aren't typical digital obstacle course videogame enemies; they're childlike in consciousness, they feel pain, fear, they ask you to stop. It becomes a commentary on the way real world regimes leverage the banality of evil to induce their soldiers to kill - you can't progress in the game without these killings, whether you deem it ethical or not.
On the subject of the characters, I thought the dialogue was way better in Japanese, the English VAs kind of make me squirm. 8-4 rewrote their personalities during the localization, too. For instance 2B has none of the clichéd devil-may-care videogame character sarcasm in Japanese, she's much colder.
Recently beat The Bug Butcher and Stories: The Path of Destinies. Up next, Dirt 3 and Parappa the Rapper (Cheep Cheep is kicking my ass though).
I had a couple of days of PTO this week and managed to finish Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and The Fall. I finished Splatoon 2 last week so I got three games out of my backlog in January. I did pick up Celeste last month, but I will finish that by the end of February.
