"Finished" Assassin's Creed Odyssey. This was a handful of design choices away from being in one of the GOAT categories. As it stands, it's one of my favorites, but it has some issues.
Player choice needs to actually matter more, outside of the last 3 missions. Even then, I wouldn't say that it did...ever. You are never really confronted by your actions (in a meaningful way), even though there is a whole "choice" system at play.
It needs more thought out and an increase in the dungeons. As it is now, it suffers from the same problem that I had with BOTW, with the exception that Odyssey has more memorable bosses/boss dungeons (outside of Gannon). Whomever designed the quests for the legendary creatures deserves a raise and more of their work in the game. Kassandra is basically Wonder Woman, and that last quest gave me DMC1 / Castlevania vibes. The setup to the reveal of the "final" boss was absolutely perfect. Fucked up and sad.
The side quests are okay, in spots. Really, for the amount of content there is, I only really remember the artifact hunt and the Daughter's of Artemis side quest. For the most part, they are ultra forgettable and the game is long af.
The mercenary system felt half baked, but I can't put a finger on why. It's just there. It exists to gate away upgrade prices. Cool, I guess. If choice came with actual consequences, maybe it would have worked better. There are a lot of people that should have smoke with me, by games end. Maybe it needed more segments where you couldn't pay off bounties.
Yall love naval combat, so whatever. It was always the last thing I did.
I dunno. It's a 10/10 for me, even with it's problems. The only thing that I hope they take from Red Dead goes against their do-most-of-everythin-you-want-whenever, game design, is some more structured main quests. The main quest doesn't have that many stand out moments and by the end, you're just there.

By HottestVapes Go To PostThen you try one of the other mech squads and fuck everything up because you pretty need to relearn the rules of the game.
blitzkrieg mech with the lightining whip is the goat, get building immunity and you can clear out 4-5 enemies in one attack

Running through with the Zenith Guard now on the Switch for a similar play style to the Rift Walkers. Firmly holding this game as the GOTY.
Fuck me, the lengths of these last 3 GiantBomb GotY podcasts

Don’t like zenith guards charge mech, only 3 health to start neutered its utility.
If you don’t mind a weak artillery, flaming behemoths are dope—probably my favorite science mech too
So last night, I had a glance through Era and spotted a thread about a game called 11-11 Memories Retold.
Brehs were fawning over it, saying how fantastic the art style is and how amazing the story is and so forth. Some tears were shed over it not selling many copies and such. So I did something regrettable, I loaded up Steam on my phone and bought the game with the intent to install it and play today.
2 hours into it, let me tell you something. The game looks like fucking arse. Straight up arse. I get the style they went for with it, but even in 4K, all the good shit enabled and at 60FPS, it looks like shit.
The praise for the story, characters and voice acting, there's some merit to that. I'm two hours in and that is full of charm and intrigue. Everything else is kinda meh, the gameplay is shallow, it looks awful and the only thing this game has going for it is the story I could've just watched unfold on YouTube.
Moral of the story is, I make bad game buying decisions.
It's ez, just gotta get creative with the shields until you get 5HP and use Metal Gear Rex as the main damage dealer.
Shield artillery is god tier tho. Most of the time with the starter squad, I used the artillery to displace an enemy from wrecking a building. Now? Hit my building, I'm behind 9000 shields breh

Can see why Abby is annoying some people
Her response to somebody arguing her representation point in God of War was literally 'whatever, I don't fucking care'
Plus her and Alex keep bringing up games that they don't even intend to put forward for any of the categories.
Always a bit bemusing when they do a terrible job of explaining a game to those who haven't played it, and then argue with the conclusion they draw from it rather than just clarifying what they were talking about in the first place
Despite that it's miles better than it was last year, when it devolved into Brad and Jeff talking to eachother for hours at a time with Ben making the odd shitty interjection. If I wanted that tripe I'd still listen to the Bombcast.

I kinda agree that there should at least be female enemies. Without that, there is legit one female character in the entire game aside from Athena showing up in one scene.
By Bold 2 in One Go To PostHer argument against God of War was fucking dumb.something dumb from giantbomb?
I cannot believe it
Vinny is good and cool, and I like Jeff Bakalar (or however you spell it) quite a bit, seems like a great guy. They make a good duo and Dan is also alright. Giantbomb east>west. Jeff Gerstmann I also like, because more often than not he is as jaded as me.
Brax, Alex, Abby and Ben are very upsetting to listen to sometimes. I think Alex has been decent at this GOTY shti so far though, not as annoying as usual.
Let Rorie decide all GOTY from now on imo

the waypoint podcasts focused on deep dives of specific games (into the breach, battletech) are excellent. patrick klepek is a shrill dweeb but austin, rob and danielle are excellent at talking through their thoughts and arguments in a way that the clowns at giant bomb are incapable of.
Is that Danielle Riandeau?
Couldn't stand her on Idle Thumbs. Speaking of which, Idle Thumbs seems to be dead. There was a period where it was really good again a year ago or so after Firewatch was done with, but it completely tanked in the leadup to Valve buying Campo Santo, and there's been no podcast since.
Not a fan of Austin or Patrick either. Was very happy when Patrick left Giantbomb.

There are people who will not in any way criticise anything female related in order not to appear sexist.

do any gaming journalists or podcasts address how ddosing is still somehow a thing in gaming and devs don't give a fuck sometimes or are they busy kissing dev ass
By HottestVapes Go To PostSo last night, I had a glance through Era and spotted a thread about a game called 11-11 Memories Retold. The real moral of the story is you should never trust Era when it comes to indies (well games in general really). Same reason I've held off on giving Gris a look. Art style is gorgeous but it looks boring as fuck.

Following up on that 11-11 Memories Retold.
The story and characters are really good. Not “video game good”, actually really well written. I’ll likely never play it again now I’ve completed it, but if you want a relaxing game to play that’s about World War I that doesn’t revolve around shooting and tells a good story, I recommend it. Soundtrack is nice too.
Also cap the FPS to 30. Sacrilegious, I know, but the art style looks fucked at 60FPS. It’s hard to explain, but 30FPS makes the game look better.

2. Sea of Thieves
3. Game Pass

I’d be more inclined to use the Win Store via gamepass than I would to buy and “own” them on the store.
Easier to accept the fuckery when the price of admission is so much lower.
By Smokey Go To PostState of Decay 2 was pretty dope, even in the state it was in close to launch. It's fun! They put out two pretty big patches in the last month that make me want to go back and the map from the first game is supposedly coming out as DLC next month, too.
