So Octopath getting mixed reviews. The Jason dude from kotaku hated it, but he also hated xenoblade 2, which I found to be one of the best games of last year. Might have been my favorite game in quite a while...
Think I'll take my chances with Octopath.

I have no idea what to think about lets go, but that eevee in the blue hat makes me want eevee instead of pikachu
It's obviously going to be easy as fuck. Just looking forward to a nice breezy and nostalgic remake of Pokemon Yellow really.
By Kuma Go To PostIt still amazes that JRPGs are still grindy in 2018.it amazes you that jrpgs are still jrpgs?
By Laboured Go To Post"This will be gud and I don't feel bad for saying so" - Laboured, 2018Sounds like they got the guy who does the recent Dragon Quest music to do the soundtrack.
Fuck this I'm writing to my politician.
The Pokémon Company has now confirmed the critters exclusive to each version. In Pikachu, you'll be able to catch Oddish, Sandshrew and Growlithe. Eevee owners will be able to nab Bellsprout, Vulpix and Meowth.

I mean they could take the time to modernize it, at least a little

"care about what another man thinks breh"
we're at the point where it's virtually impossible for a jrpg to have anything close to a good story, it's just damage mitigation from xenoblade 2 level trash at this juncture
By Red Blaster Go To Postwe're at the point where it's virtually impossible for a jrpg to have anything close to a good story, it's just damage mitigation from xenoblade 2 level trash at this junctureNier Automata is one of the best stories this gen. It also doesn’t require any grinding, unless you want to fight the secret ultra boss. But that would be like calling FF VII grindy because Emerald Weapon was hard.
The trick is just not to get sucked into stuff that’s targeted at Japanese 14 year olds. You can usually tell because the protagonists are Japanese 14 year olds.

Eevee fans taking Ls left and right
Do video games have good stories?
Best ones are usually visual novel type stuff, which are just video books lol

The best video game stories are the ones that are engaging, than being wonderfully written. I dont mind that Octopath's stories are shallow, but I mind on how much I'll care for the characters.
dipro already shifting into damage control mode lol
anyway octopath looks like another boring nostalgy cash grab so its perfect for the average switch mark--the hysterical review thread on era is indicative of this

Cute but i don't care about it all and i'm probably the biggest Xenoblade 2 hater on here.

Never have I seen a game hit the highest levels of books or movies, but I think a lot less can do. But I will say something like the story of Silent Hill 2 is fucking perfect for the gaming platform. Perfect mix of some cutscenes with story, notes around that are interesting to dig into and lots of background info happening by just observing the world around you and exploring a bit.
The story itself is simple enough, but very compelling and urging you to keep going to find out more. In the end that game, particularly the story including the past of the side characters and such, really stuck with me and became a game I loved because of that, not because of the gameplay or thrill of horror.
That is the exception, and many games will bloat themselves up to the point, of it being impossible to have a decent story. Can we really expect a good coherent story all the way through with GTA, Ass Creed and so on, when they take 80 hours to complete? I don't think so, there will be long drags in the story telling then. Others will simply fail by no taking it seriously, or at least not having competent people around it, yes fuck you David Cage. But something like the last of us also tells a decent story I think. Nothing revolutionary, but a decent story with characters you start to like as you play through. Everything is well told and quite a bit of it also done while playing, with no reason to take you out of it for cutscenes every time.
When people dismiss the argument of a bad story, being an annoyance for a game, I think it's a bit silly. Especially if it's a game that forces the story on you.

Mother 3 got a sensational story. One of the funniest games, while still telling a rather heartfelt story.
I think letting children believe that Hideo Kojima is an auteur will be disastrous for humanity in the long run.

Probably one of the more sensible things Flutter has posted.

Every game I've played that's said to have a great story has had either ham-fisted dialogue, ripped off the majority of the story from a book or film, or had fucking zmobies in it. Bonus when they pull off all three.

Think what Jason Schreier thought about it is what most gamers in the year 2018 would fine frustrating about the game.
It's definitely one made for old JRPG fans.

By Mariosalic Go To PostDid JRPG ever have good stories? They're all diffrent levels of crap.Honest answer: every once in a while. The trouble with Japan is that everybody over the age of 25 is locked in an office until they’re 65-70 for 10-12 hours a day. So by default they tend to skew towards simpler stories with shallower characterization. Nobody’s writing jrpg Herman Hesse.
Off the top of my head, some stories that were good in one way or another:
Xenogears
Persona 3 & 4
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
Suikoden II
Nier: Automata
Valkyria Chronicles (last time I said this someone jumped on me & said it was tropey, but I think it did a great job making you care about the characters and the world).
Final Fantasy IX & XII (fight me)
Phantasy Star IV
Final Fantasy Tactics
