Looks like the Pels were able to package Omer, Asik, Allen, and Nelson in addition to the first round pick in exchange for Mirotic and a second rounder. That frees up roster spots and salary for the pursuit of Monroe and (hopefully young) roster filler. Better return for the Pels than the proposal a couple days ago.
By s y Go To PostHe must hate Utahwhy would he want to be on a non-playoff team in the last season or 2 of his career?
By reilo Go To PostIt's probably a 1-3 protected pick, which is fine with me. Any pick they give up would be late lottery so just hedge bets on actually winning the draft lottery.
The fuck is wrong with you New Orleans? I'm so sorry Kib.
Tony Allen is 1000% washed up enough for Thibs to grab off the scrap heap in a week when he's bought out.
By diehard Go To Postwhy would he want to be on a non-playoff team in the last season or 2 of his career? We're going to stay healthy, make a big run, beat Houston in 7, and then get swept by the Warriors. Can't see why Joe doesn't want to be part of that.

By Dark PhaZe Go To PostPels just love selling picks. Really really dumb.Dell Demps sucks, but I think a lot of this is owner driven. He doesn't want a bad team or empty building.
By reilo Go To PostLate lottery picks still have a higher chance of becoming star players though. I don't get this argument.Because it is a rather low chance they would even be as good as Mirotic and you would need them to contribute to a team that is under ownership pressure to be in the playoffs every year. This is the kind of decision you make when you have an impatient owner.

This is the kind of decision you make when you have an impatient owner.Just to name a few late lottery picks since 2010 Draft: Kawhi, Giannis, Klay, CJ, Paul George, Donovan Mitchell, Devin Booker, Myles Turner, Steven Adams
All taken between pick 10-15
By Kibner Go To PostOh, actually, beat reporters are saying this won't affect their going hard after Monroe. Hrmmm…
It shouldn't. Monroe's a backup.
Nah, they are still going to try to sign him to a max or near max.
Mirotic doesn't really play anything other than PF though.
By reilo Go To PostLate lottery picks still have a higher chance of becoming star players though. I don't get this argument.Taurean Prince, Thon Maker, Papagiannis, Valentine, Winslow, Lyles, Payne, Payton, McDermott, MCW, Shabazz, and many, many others.

It's a snowball thing, if giving up that pick means they get to the playoffs and getting to the playoffs helps AD stay then its worth it.
You can prob take Lyles out of the bad picks category he looks really nice this year. Oh Taurean Prince is good too.

By Dark PhaZe Go To PostThey did move that God awful Asik contract though. Really helpfulYeah, that was why the first round pick was attached. It was the cost of a previous poor decision that ended up worse than expected.
By Kibner Go To PostTaurean Prince, Thon Maker, Papagiannis, Valentine, Winslow, Lyles, Payne, Payton, McDermott, MCW, Shabazz, and many, many others.Get a better GM, which you clearly need. Good GMs never waste lottery draft picks.
Like, did you think the Spurs made a mistake by trading away George Hill for a late lottery pick? That was a pretty big controversial subject at the time. That's the same line of thinking and it rarely pans out.
I honestly think if you had a competent front office, you'd covet that lottery pick more.
They got mirotic and got rid of Asik’s contract? That’s pretty good. 1-8 protection too in case the bottom falls out on em too
I think if we had a more competent front office, there would still be few first-round picks due to owner mandate after it became clear AD was a budding superstar.

Pretty much most of the major Dell Demps moves I’ve been frustrated with. Hated trading a first for Bayless(who we traded like a month later), didn’t think it was the right time to trade away high lottery picks for someone like Jrue Holiday, hated the Evans trade that gave up Rolo and depth only to force us into the first for Asik trade because we couldn’t make scrap heap centers work.
I don’t hate this though. Pels likely fall into the 8 seed at least, get a guy that works well with AD and can help conserve Davis/Cousins next season, move Asiks contract and open a roster spot for someone like Monroe.
Honestly, there is a decent case to make that Mirotic is a more natural fit for AD than Cousins. We shall see though.

The Evans for RoLo trade has pissed me off so much and continues to do so.
e: mostly though, I dislike Benson's mandate for playoffs ASAP being the impetus for all the short-sighted moves.

The narative tht holding onto a late lottery pick is better than getting mirotic is absurd. Anyone they drafted would have minimal odds of ever being as good as mirotic.
By giririsss Go To PostThe narative tht holding onto a late lottery pick is better than getting mirotic is absurd. Anyone they drafted would have minimal odds of ever being as good as mirotic. The stats guy I trust said there is a roughly 50% chance the pick would become a starter level player.
the Pelicans are kinda in "please Anthony Davis" mode so stacking young guys isn't in their best interest really. They need to get him into the playoffs and show him they are serious about contending. Shadow tanking only pushes him out the door sooner.....
By Kibner Go To PostThe Evans for RoLo trade has pissed me off so much and continues to do so.100% agree. I don’t like Demps as a GM overall, but Benson and company seem to have this quick turnaround NFL mindset ingrained throughout the team and front office and that has really constrained how this team was built during the AD era.

By Kibner Go To PostThe stats guy I trust said there is a roughly 50% chance the pick would become a starter level player.Right. But instead you get a 6'10" guy who shoots .400 from 3. Rebounds. Scores really well. He'll get good minutes as the backup next year anyway when boogie gets back.
It's a solid move.
They needed more help at the SG/SF position even more. But that's always easier said than done.

This also makes sure that when DMC comes back they don't have to keep playing AD 40mpg. For a guy who is constantly injured, that's big.
By Kibner Go To PostI don't know if I will ever live long enough to see the Pels have a "star" SF.

Fertitta is like Cuban, but not as brash. Has that Billionaire Buyer show CNBC and he's been around Houston sports for years. The new Univ of Houston basketball arena is going to named after him. He's an alum and donated like $10 million+ to it.

So I looked up something interesting about Fertitta, he basically threw all his resources at Gab Giffords when she was recovering/rehabing from her gunshot wound in Houston lending his jets and other accommodations.

Les was a great owner. There was some rumors that he sold because he got caught up in some tax/legal issues. If anybody was gonna buy, I'm glad it was Fertitta. He's not too young or old, and has a ton of stuff going in Houston.
