Dropped off the M3 today at the dealer. Wish me luck, fam.
Fortunately, the guy who's been working on the car at my preferred shop is now working part-time at this dealer so I requested him to work on the recalls.
Hmmm good point.

By Kibner Go To PostThe free shipping may have come as part of an Ebay thing and not necessarily an ECS decision.

Did you also look at FCPEuro and Pelican Parts?
I also got Zimmerman rotors for my GTI and FCP had them the cheapest versus ECS and Pelican. Not to mention their crazy ass warranty on almost everything they sell.
Also a lot of our techs get parts from ECS, FCP, and Pelican if our employee discount isn't good enough. 😂
Anyway, what are y'all's thoughts on a current-gen Audi A4?
We took one in from a trade-in, and it's gonna be quite cheap... probably under $25K and it only has about 20k miles as well.
It's very very very tempting to me since S3's are still waaaaaay out of my price range and my VW guy can still probably work on it since you know, they're basically VWs lol.
Altho tbh, I do get talked out of bad car decisions by my own car... I just need some high-speed turns and I forget about these bad decisions for a bit lmao.

Yep, FCP doesn't carry Zimmerman for M3s, idk why. They only have the BMW OEM rotors, which are a rip off considering that Zimmerman makes them. Otherwise, I bough the rest of the brake service kit from FCP.
I like the A4. You should get it. :p
While that may be fax...he would be coming from a GTI with the same 4-banger, and going into a handsome and great driving luxury car.

As for the '20 and a little older pre-refresh ones, I'd say they're pretty great around town but they're not sporty cars at all. I've had an A5 Sportback a couple years now and it's really good for what I use it for (commuting to client sites with good gas mileage to sell them expensive stuff and loading the trunk up with gear.) Basically, it's the best dishwasher I've ever driven. That said, having a Cayman spoils you. It's a huge upgrade over a GTI, that's for sure.
Good stuff: Comfortable, great fit and finish, very good stereo, shockingly good gas mileage for what it is, AWD kills torque steer and mostly masks the understeer. Mildly entertaining DCT at street speeds if you're feeling M mode. More than adequate quickness for squeaking into traffic gaps. Best infotainment and gauge cluster in class. Bling aside, it's probably also the best interior overall as well.
Bad stuff: Transmission tuning is really lazy in D and overboosted throttle in S mode. It holds way to high of a gear while highway cruising and hates to downshift (for fuel economy I assume.) M mode makes it obvious the trans is tuned for FE/turbo lag too, bizarre ratios with super short 1-3 gears. Steering feel is nonexistent for the most part and if you lose traction, it's like rumble on a game controller. Lane keep system is dumb, so turn it off. Car is also super nose heavy and drives like it. Chintzy shift paddles. Turning radius is kinda not great (probably more an A5 thing.) Turbo 4 engine note.
I also got a 2021 A4 as a loaner not that long ago. It's a much larger upgrade than I expected, mostly due to the mild hybrid system filling in torque. It makes the lazy throttle and transmission tuning a TON better. I think the steering feel is better too but I'd have to spend more time with it to say for sure. I'd miss having a rotary knob for the infotainment but that's about the extent of bad things I can say about it.
If you can swing it, they're damn good cars either way. Don't let my huge list of negatives make you think otherwise.
S3s are pretty cheap, yeah? Fairly certain I've seen low mileage ones in the 20s but then used cars are SUPER expensive right now.
Thanks for the quick review! Definitely gonna see if the A4 matches to what you said.
Newer 2016+ S3's are still over $35K these days... the only ones I can find that are under $30K have like 60k miles... which is also where I'm at on my GTI so it makes no sense imo to switch.
We'll see when this A4 gets out of the post-sale process and I can actually get to drive it lol.

I know it's not as luxurious but I feel like you can find a late-model E92 M3 with sub-30k miles for $20-25k. I actively miss mine lol just for that manual and 8300 RPM.
You'll most likely love it.
As a side note, probably my favorite random features are the hard button to turn off the infotainment screen and the second glove compartment on the driver side.

Got the M3 back after a few hours...pleasant surprise was that I got a brand new air-bag cover to go along with the airbag. I didn't realize they were all one piece. :)
Reason why it's a nice surprise, the BMW logo on my original one had some very mild wear and sun fade. It stood out to me with my new steering wheel being brand new and all.

Got forced off the road by a lorry, wheel went over edge of the tarmac, which has a 5 inch drop because all the heavy plant in the area has been destroying the verges. Massive bang, tire goes flat.
I don't see any damage or puncture, so I pump it up, and it holds air for the 15 minutes I leave the car stationary. Go to drive it and I feel it going flat and there's a wobble in the steering. Dreading that the wheel is fucked and I've got to splash out for a new 19 inch alloy.
Get it to the garage, mech pops the wheel off and we find the offside of the alloy has a huge fucking dent in it where it meets the tire. I'm like fuck, massive cost and time with the car off road when I'm traveling 400 miles a week for work.
Mech says it can be repaired, he knows a guy down the road. Take it to the guy, discover he's the son of a friend my dad had, immediately recognised me and said he could sort me out straight away. Warns me that the wheel could crack but I'm like fuck it go for it mate.
Costs me 40 quid at a mates discount for straightening the wheel out and rebalancing it. Gave him 20 for a Christmas tip.

Shares in Apple Inc jumped almost 3% on Tuesday, adding more than General Motors' entire market capitalization to the value of the iPhone maker on signs it was planning to move forward swiftly with electric car production.
"If Apple has achieved a battery breakthrough, this could serve as a driver to finally move forward with production given battery costs are one of the main obstacles to mass adoption of EVs," Evercore analyst Amit Daryanani wrote.lol
Apple's shares closed up 2.9% at $131.88, adding more than $62 billion to its market valuation. General Motors is worth around $58 billion at its current share price.
Such a shit company. I've never seen such a disconnect between one generation of cars to the next. They went from E9x to F80 and the cars felt radically different. The 5-series is totally neutered now, too.
As far as German vehicles, I'm back in the Audi train after checking out the new A6. But as far as European overall, Jaguar's still drive the best, look the best, and with the 2021 refreshes, have the best interiors too.

Yeah, BMW is completely out of touch these days.
The 2-series Gran Coupe was a great idea, but the marketing was soooooooooooooooo fucking bad, nobody knows what the fuck it is. Then you'd think the 2GC being 6-grand cheaper than a 3-series would make people choose the 2 over the 3 but nobody stocks the ultra bargain bin model of the 2GC which is around $37K. Every dealer has the M-sport package which bumps it up to $42K, putting in line with the most common 3-series on the lot which is around $45k.
Now on the 3-series, I had the chance to drive a 330i last week and meh lol. I wasn't expecting it to ride a cloud but it rode about as well as my GTI... which is on stock suspension btw. It sounded decent and accelerated decent, but that's all I can say about that. It's completely lost it's magic imo. I'd argue that the 5-series still has some life in it, but it's definitely on it's way out.
To me, it seems like the only way to experience some of that old BMW magic is to get some hyped up M sport package/trim, anything without that just sucks. The worst part is I don't know who or what to blame. We can't just blame it on the electrification of vehicles coz even hybrids/electrics know how to have fun these days. The blame solely rests on how BMW is running itself I think.
Anyway, here's something fun and not depressing:
Was driving a Taycan 4S with the electric sport sound earlier in the week and the damn thing sounds like a spaceship with it on lmao. I drove by a kid who literally stopped what he was doing and dropped his jaw on the floor lol. What also helped was that the cars is bright red af, so it was like a double whammy for him.

Porsche's Guard Red is so damn beautiful so I'm not surprised it got that kid's attention. lol
I get compliments all the time because of how good it looks on my Cayman. Two years in and I still get excited to drive it anytime I need to go somewhere and can take it. Brings a smile to my face every time I get in. I hated being sick most of this month and a large portion of last month because I felt too bad to drive. :(

Finally had the chance to drive that A4 and it's exactly what Christberg says.
It's a great car but I don't think it's for me... it's a lot more luxurious and not really a lot of sport, which is fine for most people, but clearly I'm not most people and I'm sure y'all would consider yourself the same lol.
I was also looking into a Genesis G70 but I accompanied my sister a few months ago on a test drive for the Kia Stinger and that was severely underwhelming both in performance and luxury, she ended up getting a 4-series Gran Coupe instead lmao. And with the Stinger and G70 being essentially the same car, not to mention a manual G70 being hard to find, looks like I'm gonna have to look at the Bavarians and hope to score a good deal on top of a decent warranty and my employee discount. 😂
Another idea I was kicking around was to trade in my 2016 GTI for a 2021 model... specifically an SE in Cornflower Blue:
We just got one off the truck but it's a DSG so I'm quite skeptical already, but we'll see how it goes.

You know, I have to say the fact that there's no such thing as a decent new entry level midsize sports sedan these days is pretty galling. Especially when I grew up in an era where you had a G35, TL, 330i MSport, ATS V6 etc all rolling at the same time. Pretty much you have a G70 3.5 TT and that's it if you're looking new. And a tier above that you have the C43 and that's it there. :|

You'd need to go for the Jaguar XE-S. But unfortunately, it was dropped after the facelift, so you can only get pre-facelift and it doesn't benefit from the sizable changes made to the interior and exterior. You can get the RWD XE P300, which is still pretty punchy with 300HP. The chassis is absolutely phenomenal, miles ahead of BMW and Merc.
The new Acura TLX Type-S is said to be a sports car, as well. The press has raved about the chassis in the base models.
Good news everyone! Alfa Romeo is nixing their hatchback and replacing it with a crossover. Because this homogeneity is exactly what we all want.

Ever since Mazda revealed its first electric car, the MX-30, and especially after it it announced there would be a range-extended version using a rotary engine, we've had one question: will it come to America? And as you probably noticed in the headline, we finally know that the answer is yes. We're also getting both the electric and rotary versions.MAZDA BACK
Also, I appreciate Singer's craftsmanship, but I think they are bad for the restomod community.
Reason being, is that they are gobbling up 964s and all the hearty improvements those cars have over the classic 911 just so they can backdate them to look like a classic 911. There were also 10,000 less 964s produced than classic 911s. So by Singer gobbling up all of them at a premium, they are ending up jacking up the value of them because they are catering to a very select and very rich clientele where there is no difference between a $30k and a $60k body to start with because the end-product costs $500,000.
The solution is quite simple for them: build their own 964-inspired chassis/tub. They have the means and they already produced a fuckton of carbon fiber body panels, so there's no reason to keep purchasing 964s just so they can deconstruct them. They are inspiring and fucking the restomod community over at the same time.

On an unrelated note, can you find out anything about Sorted(the show with Rob Spaghetti, Matt and Emilia)? Lol.
I wasn't fully keeping up with it particularly but someone in the YT comments of a recent VinWiki video was saying the show seems like it might be experiencing some other issues since the release dates of the show is wildly inconsistent lol. I mean the show is definitely poorly edited and as someone who does video editing for a living, watching the show's editing annoys me to no end, but I don't think the poor editing can result in delays and all that so there must be something more to it.
On a sidenote, if any of y'all know anyone at AutoTempest looking for a freelance video editor, tell them to contact me lmao. Car Trek and Sorted's editing is just sooo bad I'm honestly shocked someone is approving it. There's moments where the footage isn't even color corrected(literally ungraded footage so it looks grey af), audio levels are mismatched, video shot at the wrong resolution(4K YT upload using footage shot at 720p and oversharpened)... I can go on and on. Honestly I just watch it coz the content is great but it definitely looks amateurish... much more amateurish than when Doug DeMuro started his YouTube channel years ago.
Anyway, rant aside... I'm officially putting my car search on hold lol. I really would love a new one, but nothing I've driven(that I can afford at least) spoke to my soul. I test drove an A4, S3, C300, 330i, M235i 6MT, and a WRX STI and out of all of them only the M235i and STI made me feel something(guess why lol). But the M235i is too small and the backseats are practically unusable and the STI was lovely to drive, but I'd probably get tired of the suspension really quick and fuel economy is garbage. Meanwhile my GTI is large enough, the suspension feels like an Audi and I average 30mpg even when I drive like a maniac all the time so yeah.

Eh, I'm not gonna give up the luxuries of a big city. Maybe I'll end up back in Portland again but unlikely. I can work remote anywhere but long-term when you're expected to be in-office again, a big city like SF or NYC will always have a higher salary ceiling for me especially if I want to move beyond just doing software engineering.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has asked Tesla to recall 158,716 examples of the Model S and the Model X to fix or replace the touchscreen, which is also known as the media control unit (MCU). Government officials aren't concerned about motorists not being able to blast goat bleats at other drivers, but they explained that driving around without a touchscreen is a safety hazard that increases the risk of a crash.
Internal documents sent to NHTSA by Tesla revealed a touchscreen failure rate of 14.2% to 17.3% for examples of the Model S built between the 2012 and the 2015 model years, and of 1.9% to 4.1% for cars built between 2016 and 2018. However, investigators stressed that they expect failure rates will accelerate in the coming years as the cars age, and they added that Tesla's projection models confirm this hypothesis.
"As the vehicles continue to in use [sic], more memory blocks are subsequently consumed, shortening the life of the 8GB eMMC device leading to inevitable failure of the MCU. Given Tesla's projects [sic] of MCU repairs, even MY 2018 subject vehicles will experience 100% failure of the MCU within approximately 10 years," the letter said.buy junk for $100,000, brehs

There's moments where the footage isn't even color corrected(literally ungraded footage so it looks grey af), audio levels are mismatched, video shot at the wrong resolution(4K YT upload using footage shot at 720p and oversharpened)… I can go on and on. Honestly I just watch it coz the content is great but it definitely looks amateurish… much more amateurish than when Doug DeMuro started his YouTube channel years ago.
Anyway, rant aside… I'm officially putting my car search on hold lol.
Somebody for the love of god make a luxury compact sedan with a goddamn manual transmission please… my wallet is waiting for you. 😂
I need some help with video editing if you have time.
By Lunatic Go To PostAudi S3 is probably the best you can get right now. Me personally the car i'm really loving is the Audi Q3 Sportback S-Line. Super attractive vehicle and I thought I would never like it. My bredrin got one a month ago and its so good looking.
Yeah the S3 was lovely. I really loved everything about it, but it's one of those cars that was too fast to have fun on the street. The biggest knock I personally have on it is that it's practically a sedan Golf R... which is to say, I don't feel like it's such a huge upgrade considering that the way my GTI is specced out, it's got the Performance Package which gives it the black magic e-LSD and the Golf R brakes, power and AWD are really the only biggest differences.
If I really had to get a new car tho, I think I'm definitely gonna go Audi. They're just leagues ahead than BMW and Benz I feel and they still retain some semblance of fun... which is something I never felt driving the C Class or 3 Series.

Slide in my DMs man, I'll see what I can do.
The R8 getting a wrap next week, fam. Gonna take a while, hopefully it's ready by the following Friday.
Heard from someone in the biz a while back(around the BRZ's unveiling) that Toyota is renaming the 86 to Celica when they unveil it.
Thought it was utter BS coz it was a marketing guy from one of the brands we sell and it makes no sense why he'd have that info anyway since his agency doesn't work with Toyota. Well, doomscrolling on my FB earlier I saw this:
https://carbuzz.com/news/could-toyota-finally-bring-back-the-celica-name
Apparently a patent was filed on the 15th by Toyota for the Celica name. And like the article says, it could be that they just filed it so a jackass wouldn't be able to steal it from them. But imo, now's a good time as any to revive that name and put it to good use... I mean we have the Supra already after all.
