Seeing a bunch of talented actors perform the OJ verdict, along with the music and editing and direction, makes it effective, not the verdict itself. Unpredictability is for real life.

Seems to me - and I haven't seen it yet - like it's about that story being told, rather than what the story is... if that makes sense. It sounded better in my head.
At no point in the Big sick did I ever feel that the fate of the girl was up in the air. Everything about the film mader it clear that that was not the focus of the story, even putting aside foreknowledge. Why would you care about dramatic tension when it is obvious that is not what the film is trying to do?

I really liked The Big Sick. Not a film that will stay with me over the years. But I sure enjoyed it's story and it had some good jokes and fine acting. Hard to dislike.

I dunno, sometimes I feel like the interracial aspect of it actually works against movies. That goes for every touchy subject like slavery, racism etc. Films with these subjects generally get high praise from the media and Hollywood folks but get smacked by people online with exactly that "yeah just because they handle a touchy subject it's so well regarded". Why not just focus on that at all and enjoy the movie for what it is. It's just a part of the story The Big Sick is telling and it just so happens to be based on Kumail's real life.
I watched it two nights ago and thought it was fine. I thought it was fine the same way I think Lady Bird was fine and that the ending was appropriate to what proceeded and led up to it. The ending didn't make the film but it was a good bookend for the story that was told.
