I've seen so many medicore players changing clubs, for a sum that's way beyond any sane comprehension over the last season.
They could have gone for a cheaper route with a younger player, but I guess due the competition they're rather getting a player that is "somewhat" proven. The CB market doesn't really have alot of options, especially during winter.
Also you don't know who exactly pushed for it, while Klopp certainly did, I'm sure there are others within the club that wanted a reliable option (which is hilarious with his current season).
Overall I think they paid far to much, but english market tax, winter transfer phase and possible competition from City made that package alot more expensive than what they initially planned.
