Sean Parker unloads on Facebook "exploiting" human psychology
- Page 1 of 1
In the green room, Parker mentioned that he has become "something of a conscientious objector" on social media.
"I don't know if I really understood the consequences of what I was saying, because [of] the unintended consequences of a network when it grows to a billion or 2 billion people and … it literally changes your relationship with society, with each other … It probably interferes with productivity in weird ways. God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains."
"The thought process that went into building these applications, Facebook being the first of them, … was all about: 'How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?'"
"And that means that we need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever. And that's going to get you to contribute more content, and that's going to get you … more likes and comments."https://www.axios.com/sean-parker-unloads-on-facebook-2508036343.html
Just like loot boxes in games and long grinds for gear.
I always feel like the odd man out. I have an insty account my wife set up for me that I've loaded 10 pictures to in the last 3 years. I have no facebook. I just recently got a twitter account since my news aggregator blew up. I doubt I'll ever make one post. The only social media I consume is via anonymous message boards and specifically one's that don't have up-votes. I want conversation. I don't give two flying fucks about someone liking me, my pictures or how many times I took a shit today.
I'm also on the cusp of the social media movement. I didn't grow up surrounded by it. Then again neither did a bunch of old people who share their awful russian fed news memes.

By s y Go To Post……duh?
You don't generally expect this kinda thing from someone who helped shape the movement.
I mean I recognized that pattern in myself 3 years ago and haven't logged in since, but most people don't understand or realize this feedback loop and how everything presented to you is meant to exploit your impulses. It's not healthy.
Facebook is a drug. You get dopamine shots for likes. Same goes for IG etc. I noticed myself how more likes = dopamine.
Thankfully FB is very customisable if you want to make it. I use it mostly as news aggregator for different topics plus a few friends I really want to follow, that's it. I may upload a thing or two every few months.
But in the end it's more harm than good.

I dont use facebook for social media.
I think I can count the number of times I've ever posted something on my timeline on one hand.
but there are very active filmmaking community groups on there and getting side gigs have been very beneficial.

See social media can be useful for stuff like this. You just can't get caught up in all the bullshit. Same thing with Twitter.
I only use Facebook for messenger and event management with friends at this point and stopped using it as an everyday thing for reasons others have mentioned. I still like twitter because it is a great way to get breaking sports news as well as being linked to good articles. I have stopped myself from reading more than a few comments on anything controversial, though, because it just drains my energy.

This is the exact reason I deleted my Instagram and stopped using Twitter a few years ago. Luckily, I never had a Facebook.
I recently started using Twitter again for the connections it could possibly bring in the future but that's it. I tweet a few times per month at best and I still use "likes" as favorites.
I much prefer forums where there is no incentive to compete for likes/shares/followers/etc. Just good old fashioned discussion.

only use it for organizing football. I have a friendslist of around 30 and that's all guys i play the game with.
Really got no time for the rest of it.

I long told some folks who would do that "Imma just delete facebook because shitty relatives and friends of friends" go make a new one or use the hide feed/groups function and just keep it people who don't piss you off. I can get even doing forum fuckery just to let off some steam but I don't get it in the social media sense. Why load up FB just to be mad. I have plenty of friends on the fb who I get to keep up to date on what they're doing and run events and stuff through there. It's a useful tool for me especially since I don't have to call up every other person and tell them "party at my house." Just send out a fuckton of invites from a group I add them to. Cool.
All of these things are down to the individual to use properly.
Facebook is a commercial entity. Trying to criticise them for coming up with the best UI and best way to stay on their site is like criticising a chef for making the best food so that you come back to his restaurant.
The psychology behind this stuff has been studied at length, and is readily available in many places.
I use Facebook to follow topics i wouldn't otherwise bother to go to their site to do. Keep track of large events in individuals lives, for the groups section (there are a lot of really good craft beer groups for my city), and rarely the event stuff.
I use the rest, twitter, insta etc as aggregators as much as anything. Rarely posting my own stuff. Like less than 6 times a year.

By DY_nasty Go To PostYeah you do.
You do? I guess I would not but ok lol
I've never pressed a like button on anything, anywhere and I don't understand the fixation with doing so on multiple platforms online today. I get and understand the human reaction to having the urge to push a button, but a like click doesn't feel the same to me.
I haven't had Facebook in nearly six years and rarely used it when the account was open. Part of the reason is because I would be bombarded with Tavon liked Walmart or Jessica liked McDonald's...etc. I'm sure you can turn that off but I just didn't want anything to do with a system where people feel compelled do such things.
Perhaps they should limit the amount of things you can like? I mean really give the system an overhaul and make a like mean something because the current system at this point has to absolutely be corrupted to the point where the data is largely inaccurate for business purposes.
They'd probably just start selling additional likes. You'd see like cards at the register at CVS. :/
I also don't understand this follow me and I'll follow back that you see all the time. Why would I follow someone or something if I have no interest in it? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of following in the first place? Is it really all about the number?
Show me someone with 5 million followers that is following 5 million accounts and I'll show an asshole.

The follow me to follow you back thing about being able to represent yourself to marketing people as having many followers. It's powerful to try and get advertising for events.
Lets say slaent wanted to run a Dota2 event. One powerful way to show to potential sponsors that their sponsorship money would result in their brand being pushed to many potential cusotmers is 'we'll be advertising the tournament through all our social media with x many people following'.
Now replace slaent with a person trying to get a job as a promoter, dj, band trying to book gigs etc etc etc.

Even just bands themselves, great way to tell your friends, coworkers, schoolmates whatever hey I'm playing at blank on blank. Or I'm selling stuff at blank fair if you're going etc.
I would straight up delete my Facebook if it wasn't the only way some of my family communicates. I'm stuck with it for now 🤷

Deleting social media accounts is a good way to find out who really cares about you if you're not sure. There are only about four people who are not my parents who still maintain regular contact with me since I left Facebook and the rest behind a few years ago. Everyone else will ask each other where you went, but they won't call you. LOL
