Still really liking the Nighthawk Carbons. I predominately work from home so am wearing them for long hours and they never feel too tight. I don't
get "a sense of relief" when I take them off because there is nothing to relieve. Maybe a little heavy after extended time but not really noticeable.
My only complaints after these several months of using it is that I wish it was fully open instead of semi-open. I maybe should have gotten the Nightowl which is the fully closed one? Still super happy with them.
I go back and forth between the leather and fabric ear cups. I don't really hear much of a difference between them, but I don't think I really tested them for that. They are close enough that the way they rest and feel against my head is more important. The leather blocks more sound out but the fabric doesn't feel as "sticky" when the weather gets warm.

I think once the drop is available again, I'm going to order the Massdrop x THX AAA 789 and then a Topping D50. They both seem to get glowing reviews and appear to be the last step before truly outrageous prices for noticeable differences.
Hmmm... or maybe I should get the SMSL SU-8 v2 instead of the Topping as it offers similar performance along with balanced outputs.
Doing some more reading this week, and the new $100 JDS Labs Atom amp is the best amp you can get until you get to the $350 for the previously linked THX 789. The biggest drawbacks on it, though, are that it is made of plastic and offers only single termination connections (so, no support for balanced line gear).
Got my Atom amp in a few minutes ago. It fixed an issue I was having with the Emotiva BasX A-100 I was using before where, at low volumes, I was getting a huge left/right imbalance. Since these Nighthawks are really efficient, I was always listening at low volumes and it was annoying having to always adjust the volume levels in Windows instead of at the amp level. No such issue with the Atom! It also takes up a literal fifth of the desk space, so another win!
Okay, Kibner. I think I want to try some new headphones. I'm eying up a pair of Fostex T50RP MK3's, I'm also interested in Sennheiser HD 58X's still, I'm open to any other ideas under £200/$250 new or used.
Mainly, I want a pair with some good as fuck bass that have flatter external cups so my ModMic wireless will permanently stay attached without issue. The K712's are fantastic but the external cups don't have a proper flat surface for the magnetic clasp to stick to.

Ta, I'll look into those Sony's and the AT's. Those V-Moda's are sadly ugly as sin to me though.
On second thoughts, I may have found a solution to the ModMic clasp that won't require a second pair of headphones.
Now I just need somebody with a 3D printed, ZABBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO?!
Now I just need somebody with a 3D printed, ZABBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO?!
Zabo came through with the goodness. Had to grind it down a little to get a snug fit, but this is perfect.
By Kibner Go To PostLove seeing a plan between fellow Slaenters come together! Glad you guys got it to work!
It’s the start of something beautiful between me and Zabo, I can feel it. Man’s even printed out some new case feet for my PC.
Still slightly pissed at how those came out. First print I wasn't happy with, but it'll get the job done.
The finish isn't perfect, but If I wanted it to be I could sand it down and give it a coat of pain. I'm happy with it though, it fixes my only issue with the K712/modmic.
Man, I've been spoiled with my Nighthawk Carbon's. Several years ago, I bought the Sony Platinum Wireless Headset since it was the best headphone with 3D audio support on the PS4. I knew even then it wasn't great, but now it just sounds like trash, even when using presets developers made for it in use with a particular game (FF XIV, in this case). :'(
Haha, good to hear you're still enjoying them.
I recently moved from my student apartment to something bigger with a buddy of mine. Gotta say, now my speakers can breath properly everything sounds even better. A better amp is still something for in the future, but I'm happy to see how room acoustics can improve the quality of my gear.

Hah, good shit!
After I finish moving myself in a few months, wall treatments are high on my shopping list for that exact reason. Too much echo at my gf's place, even with carpeted floors.

Hmm that's too bad. At some point I still want that NAD M10 for Dirac implementation. But that's not something for the foreseeable future I'm afraid.
Also happy I can finally say this, Dali is coming to the headphone market. Today they finally announced them officially and I think they look great. They didn't exactly reinvent the wheel, looks close to the B&O models probably. But it's modern and slick. One model with ANC and the other one without. Can't wait for them to arrive at the store to test them.

Definitely keep us informed!
For both my desktop and my TV stereo, I just stick with the miniDSP DDRC-24 for my Dirac needs. The DAC in it is not quite as good/transparent as I would like, but the difference Dirac has over a better DAC without it is so huge that it's worth it. Even though it is limited to stereo, that unit has four outputs, letting you attach dual subs to it for actual stereo output with no problem. It also has lots of options for crossover. Like four or five different algorithms and different settings for each. As well as setting what you want your crossover to be, per output.
The unit itself is $400, which seems fair. If you need a calibrated mic, they charge an extra $75. Unfortunately, the only way to change all the settings as you like is through a wired USB port (a PC or laptop has to be hooked up to it during configuration), unless you shell out another $75 for the wi-fi adapter that will let you control it over your network. The $5 remote only lets you change source, select between four different presets you setup, turn on/off Dirac, adjust volume, and mute.

A site that I have been following lately has been https://www.audiosciencereview.com/. They do reviews of various DACs and amps to get concrete measurements for them in order to figure out how much distortion, noise, and other "imperfections" the equipment may have. It does no good for anyone who looks at their gear to color the sound; only useful for people who want the audio chain to be as transparent and true-to-source as possible.

That new NAD is looking sexy as fuck. Streamlining the design with their stereo amps including the colorful display. Packed with features and power. Kind of makes me consider going surround at some point considering I love films/series as much as music.
Ordered a straight cable for my K712's. Been using the coiled cable that came with them since I got them, but it's been irritating the fuck out of me for a while now.
This new cable is absolutely what I needed. Less bulk between my keyboard and mouse pad, doesn't retain any particular shape. Just lays flat as it should.
By Wahabipapangus Go To PostYou got cum stains on your mouse padI am not ashamed
Anyone know who makes a male-to-male, trrs cables, with one end as straight and one end angled? That is more durable and less tangly than this CableCreation cable? https://www.amazon.com/CableCreation-Silver-Plating-Compatible-iPhones-Tablets/dp/B0793JNYLL/
Might just order a custom one from this site that my gf found for me: https://zapcables.com/design-your-own-trrs-cable/
Linius, have you gotten a chance to try those Dali headphones, yet?

Just as a reminder to anyone here looking for a headphone amp on a budget, the JDS Labs Atom is $100 and is effectively transparent (as in, it adds no color or distortion or anything else that can change the sound of the source [except volume, of course]) for all but the most sensitive ears on the planet. A fantastic piece of kit.

By HottestVapes Go To PostBeen eying up the JDS labs atom for a while, will get around to buying one eventuallyThe other equally transparent alternative that isn't an absurd cost is the THX AAA 789, but it is far more expensive and only better if you need more power to drive your headphones than the Atom has or need/want the different connections it has.
Unless, of course, there has been something else released earlier this year that I haven't seen measurements for.
What's a good DAC to match the Atom with by the way? Not just in being a good DAC, but also matching the design of the Atom?
By HottestVapes Go To PostWhat's a good DAC to match the Atom with by the way? Not just in being a good DAC, but also matching the design of the Atom?Aesthetics wise? Not sure. Most DACs I would recommend are metal. You can look into the Khadas Tone Board and get a custom case for it. If you give me a couple weeks (and remind me!), I can take a picture of how the JDS Labs OL DAC stacked with the Atom looks.
e: you may even be able to commission Zabo to 3D print you a custom Khadas case! It's a popular thing so I'm pretty sure there are some basic dimensions/plans he can use to fit it

Not yet, think they'll starting shipping out to stores soonish. They posted a picture on instagram with a huge delivery of these in Denmark.
I believe we do have the new Bowers & Wilkins PX5 at the store. So curious to see what that one is like. Still a bit sad they decided to go all noise cancellation these days. Hopefully the PX7 really delivers.

I'd rather go with something off the shelf than commissioning Zabo to print more tat for me. Much as I appreciate him.
I'll wait and remind you to see how it looks with the OL DAC. Doesn't need to look as clean as the SMSL and Schiit stacks, but as long as they match fairly well in dimensions I'll be happy.
It's not going to look as clean as that, unfortunately, as they are different dimensions. JDS Labs is supposed to be looking into making an Atom-like version of the OL Dac, but there is no timeline for that.

I was just farting around Emotiva's website and found this nifty little device: https://emotiva.com/collections/accessories/products/btr-1
It is a Bluetooth receiver which lets you turn non-Bluetooth receivers/speakers/etc. into Bluetooth devices so you can play music wirelessly. When used, it shows up as a Bluetooth device for your phone (or whatever device you are using that can talk to other Bluetooth devices). It has stereo analog and digital outputs to connect to your system. Uses Bluetooth 4.0 and AptX 3.0 standards with a range of up to 50 feet.
There are other, similar devices that do the same thing for more or less money. If audio quality is a need, make sure whatever Bluetooth receiver you are looking at uses the AptX standard.

Someone else's JDS Labs OL Dac + Atom Amp setup:
In my experience, the light on the OL Dac is much dimmer and the Atom amp uses a soft white light when it is turned on instead of that blue. But that should give you an idea of how they stack on top of each other.

By Kibner Go To PostI think I know, but what do you dislike about noise-cancelling?
I think the technique is beneficial for those who mainly use it during commuting or to block out office noise etc. But every model with ANC seems to perform worse than their none ANC competition when it comes to pure sound quality. If you don't really need ANC you can get more bang for buck with other models. Much like the B&W P7W sounds so much better than the PX. Just wish B&W would still have both options available.
Thanks! And, yeah, that's about what I figured. I see how you are so bummed about that B&W decision. :(

We have something similar to this from our Argon brand which we upgraded to a sender/receiver device. So it allows you to hook it up to an amplifier to send music over bluetooth. But the other way around to send audio to your headphones as well. So basically anything that has analogue or optical out can transfer the signal wirelessly over bluetooth. Sold it to a guy who wanted to listen to vinyl while his wife was watching TV. His recordplayer had an optical out so he can just listen to his albums trough his headphones without wires now. And it features aptX HD, which is pretty neat.
Very neat and a perfect use-case for that function. If you could find a link just so I can share with some others that may be interested, that would be wonderful.
For some reason it's not on the international webshop we launched earlier this year. But this is the product with a Dutch description. Pretty straightforward tech anyways.
Aye, it's just been hard for me to really google for a product with those two-way capabilities. Thanks!
Man, it is uncomfortable as fuck to wear headphones over a cap. I don't see how people can stand it.

I see a lot of people wearing headphones over a hood too. The fuck is that about? Everything sounds muffled to fuck.
