But that's a connection a lot of people are going to make anyway, given the stigma around homosexuality as some kind of sexual deviancy. It's not a good look. It shouldn't be part of his statement for reasons bigger than himself.

Spacey never had to come out, ever. It's never anyone else's problem what your sexuality is. He could have just apologised, the same way males who assault females do (or should!)

My boss and another supervisor who are both gay basically said everything in this thread about how fucked up it was for him to tie both him coming out and his attempt at pedophillia together. Basically feeding into some of the darkest of slurs about male homosexuals.

Even if that were the case (and it's possible, no doubt), he should have led with that excuse, not deflect to him being gay. It's an egregious mishandling of the situation.
I maintain that it's not a mishandling of the situation, but deliberate and calculated. He's attempting to drive the narrative. More people are talking about his coming out and the circumstances of it than talking about the fact that he attempted to rape a child.

That's still a mishandling of the situation though. I never said anything about it not being deliberate and calculated. Of course it was! But that calculated decision was also the wrong move to make with respect to the LGBTQ community. His handling of the situation will have a cascading negative effect on the community, and he shouldn't have done it.

But self-serving, selfish arrogance knows no bounds for what it will do to affect others to maintain one's own status. This is pretty much the outcome he could have hoped for, really. I suppose that comment was less meant to anyone here, and more to the general narrative that I see unfolding elsewhere, which really is less about the fact that Kevin Spacey is a child molesting predator, and more solely about the circumstances of his coming out.
