Seems like this situation isn't going to resolve itself harmoniously...
The Catalan regional parliament has voted to declare independence from Spain, while the Spanish parliament has approved direct rule over the region.
Catalan MPs easily approved the move amid an opposition boycott.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had told senators direct rule was needed to return "law, democracy and stability" to Catalonia.
The crisis began earlier this month when Catalonia held a controversial referendum on independence.
The Catalan government said that of the 43% of potential voters who took part, 90% were in favour of independence. But Spain's Constitutional Court had ruled the vote illegal.

I'm not up to speed on enough of the background to understand they "why's" and the "what's the fall out". I can't see how this would be good economically but maybe I"m wrong?

You are not.

Spain has gone about this in all the wrong ways and they have checked all the wrong boxes on how to respond to this, however from an economic point of view it's vaguely understandable why they're acting like this - Catalonia makes up a very large portion of their entire GDP. I've read some articles that estimate the cost of independence would be enormous, as Catalonia would also have to leave EU.
Wasn't Brexit's motivation to fuck immigrants though? I think Catalonia's motivations are to fuck Madrid.
It is, but numerous EU officials now have stated that Independence from Spain would mean exiting the EU and negotiating for entry - an expensive and a lengthy process, as we know.

EU needs to get over itself; doesn't even pay for its own defense and wants to act like it can't afford to give Catalonia a pass.
