Man, there's a tonne of good games released this year.
So, as of writing this post, Wolfenstein 2 has an OpenCritic average of 88, and Assassin's Creed Origins has an average of 84. Under normal circumstances, both would definitely be in the conversation for some Game of the Year gongs at the end of the year.
2017 is not normal circumstances. We've had Nioh, Persona 5, Hellblade, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier Automata, Cuphead, Hollow Knight, PUBG, XCOM 2, Sonic Mania, Resident Evil 7, Total War Warhammer 2, Pyre, two Yakuza games, and both a new mainline Zelda and a new mainline Mario. I'm sure I'm missing a tonne of fantastic games from this list, too. It's ridiculous.
It's been a very long time since we've had a year with a lineup of games this strong. (Best year since 2007, perhaps even better?)

I don't think its far off to say this year has 100% been better than 2007.
its definitely been a super strong year, for better (amazing games) or for worse (my poor wallet)

It's been a terrific year for gaming. PS4 and X1 are reaching their peak and Nintendo came out on full force with Switch.
PUBG also come out of nowhere to become a juggernaut beating sales records.

Super strong year and the birth of Battle Royale in a major way. Something for everyone on each system too.
It’s been such a great year for video games, agreed, but I am pained with adulthood that steals much-needed time to play all of these titles! 😭
Yeah, it almost makes me hope 2018 is a slow year, so I can catch up on games I missed out on. Divinity: Original Sin 2 looks amazing, but I doubt I'll get around to it until I power though my Switch backlog. Also I may want to wait awhile after Xenoblade before jumping into another long RPG.
I'm missing out pretty hard on the big PS4 releases this year, although I did play a lot of PS4 games last year. Maybe I will try to work Nier: Automata into my rotation.

I'm really sad I can't afford Wolfenstein 2 for the time being. Just finished The New Order after a long time keeping it gathering dust in my virtual library and it was my favourite FPS in a long time. Blazko is a legend.
But yes, 2017 has been amazing. Even though I didn't finish it, Nioh is probably my favourite so far.

By s y Go To PostEh, its been okay. Im a really really picky gamer though.
super
Crazy amount of great games and I have only played Nier on that list (which I haven't finished). I honestly don't have the time to play all these games even though I want to.
Ever since I got a switch I've thrown all my money at Nintendo. Even got a samus N3DSXL and I got a snes classic. Basically Nintendo owns me.
By Smokey Go To PostsuperBest game I've played this year has been Dark Souls 3. But that's a 2016 title.
It's amazing the consistency of it all, i think of a dozen games i have played this year and i would consider them all at least 8s if were to review them. All very different types of games as well, there's been a lot of variety.
There's a bunch i haven't played either as this thread proves, to think there was a bunch delayed into 2018 too but i suppose you can say that about most years in all fairness. One game i badly want to play is Divinity 2 but i'm unsure whether i should wait for the inevitable PS4 release or just jump in now.

By blackace Go To Postbeen a meh year for wRPGs thoDivinity 2 has been extremely well received, hasn't it?
How is th future generation supposed to indulge in video games when there are too many good ones out there?
By LFMartins86 Go To PostDivinity 2 has been extremely well received, hasn't it?sure but other than that it's been pretty dry.
By blackace Go To Postsure but other than that it's been pretty dry.Ehhh, there's a fair decent amount of RPGs popping up on Steam but most in early access sadly.
Thinking about it, the back half of 2016 was crazy, too. It's possibly been the strongest ever 18 months for videogame releases.
I didn't like 2016 that much, May 2016 was insane though. Uncharted 4, Doom, Overwatch, Blood and Wine.
Re7 is my GOTY
No, now it-s BOTW
Persona 5 is the best experience
But now Destiny 2 was the best experience I had Online with friends.
I am now confused.

IMO it's the best year of gaming since the PS2 era. Since about 2005 or so it's always felt like most years have one or two standout titles while the rest is 'meh'. 2017 has at least 6 or 7 standout titles plus a TON of other quality stuff, and this is coming from someone that doesn't even own a Switch. Shit is bananas.
By DY_nasty Go To PostAnd The Frozen Wilds comes out in a week and a half!
By s y Go To Posti forgot if i even liked horizonNo you didn't. You know it in your heart. Look deeper. Horizon was an excellent game.
But as everyone else has been saying. Great games all around. Nintendo owns me now too. I still horizon was a better game then BOTW, although I liked the freedom of movement in BOTW more.
By s y Go To PostEh, its been okay. Im a really really picky gamer though.Im in the same boat.
Prey and Cuphead are the only games I cared about. Nothing else really interests me this year. Depending on whats going on with Hunt: Showdown Early Access and Escape from Tarkov if they even release this year. .
Can't even imagine how overwhelming it can be for multi platform players.
Had to give Evil Within 2 and Shadow of War a pass for now, banking on Destiny 2 (+ DLC) and AC:Origins to keep me busy throughout the rest of the year.

Too many damn good games, however most were on the PS4. At some point I'm gonna have to pick one up and delve into its library.
This year as been great. And next year...? Boi. Monster Hunter World? Dragonball FighterZ?! Maybe a new God of War that same year too?!?
May ricky forgive me for saying this, but I don't think Sonic Mania belongs in the same list as Mario Odyssey or Zelda. Not even close.
By DJ Lushious Go To PostAnd The Frozen Wilds comes out in a week and a half!
lm pumped
If Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is as a good as the first one, won't probably get to even slightly dent the 2017 backlog in December as that will be priority.
And next year will be the same, God of war, insomniac’s spiderman, days gone, shadow of colossus, monster hunter, ni no kuni 2..
This was what I wrote on GAF a couple months ago and it doesn't even come close to covering everything great.
It definitely has some glaring Mobile ommissions and probably some PC ones, too:
We had the launch of Switch with what is probably the best console launch year since the PS2 in terms of software. It's also a big step forward for Nintendo as it seems to have washed the disapointment of the Wii U aside. In fact, internal memory aside, the hardware feels both modern and innovative. The former is something we haven't seen from Nintendo in awhile.
2017 also sees the launch of the SNES Classic Mini and the 2DS XL.

Tell me about it. I'm still catching up to the truck load of games released since the beginning of the gen and I only have a PS4 lmfao. We're living in an age of abundance and great opulence my people. Rejoice in this plentiful bounty the gods have blessed us!
I don’t even pay attention to the console scene that much so I have no idea if knack 2 actually exists or is a meme
I've like not played almost any of those games :lol
I can't even remember what I've fucking played this year apart from XCOM 2 WOTC (which was great).
