are they gonna use a modbot?
By Ruga Go To Postare they gonna use a modbot?
Surely not, there's some smart people in that list of mods/admins and using modbot again would be the dumbest thing.

I really hope not. Modbot was one of the worst tools I've ever seen in terms of removing accountability from moderators. Since Bish left, did any moderator close a thread without using it?

You never know. They might actually try it. And users might be ok with it.

But the use of modbot always felt so shitty to me. If you're going to lock a thread and give some vague explanation, at least have the stomach to do it with your own account. Hiding behind an anonymous account that anyone could use always felt so damn cheap to me. I hope it stays dead.
By sonnyboychris Go To PostCan someone explain to me the stories behind Bish leaving and Amir0x?
I don't know why Bish left. Amir0x left because he was outted as being an actual pedophile.

Yeah out of all the complaints about the moderation on Gaf this was one of the few legitimate ones. It never made any sense to me. Like the fuck are you afraid of? If you want to close a thread, just fucking close it and explain why. What is the point of hiding your identity?

It makes it harder to establish patterns of behaviour? I don't know if it was used like this, but if a particular mod was prematurely shutting down discussion of certain topics, or picking on certain posters, modbot would obfuscate who it was.

Yeah but what difference would this make? I'm pretty sure Evilore/the Admins would've been able to tell who was using the account. Also if the regular users knew who was closing threads it's not like there was shit we could do about it.

Users got Amirox demodded didn't they (that was before my time)? To be fair, IIRC the stated reason was that the real identities of some of the mods were known, so modbot was used to avoid tying closures to real people. Not sure I buy that 100% as the only reason though, but I'm conspiratorially minded.
