Its what you do after launch that really matters. Wii U had a great launch. Then a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge drought for about 6-7 months, then we got Pikmin 3.
I'd rather have the Switch's leaky faucet approach.

BOTW was great enough that it made up for the lack of big games elsewhere, at least for me. BOTW, Snipperclips to try out local multiplayer, and Shovel Knight on the cheap from the Mexican eShop definitely were more than enough for me personally.
Also the secret second best game in the launch line up, the Japanese demo of Puyo Puyo Tetris.
I honestly think that this might be the best first year I've ever experienced with a console. It's not just the number of good games or the handful of incredible titles. I've taken the Switch on trips, I've been able to sneak in short bursts of play when I normally couldn't, and I've had a blast playing alone or with my kids. It's been such a solid little gaming platform and Nintendo has avoided any release slumps. Other platforms have seen better lineups in the first year, sure, but the Switch has never lost its shine and it's so blasted convenient that I find myself playing it way more than I expected that I would.

Nah. It's been fantastic. Zelda, Mario Kart, Mario+Rabbids, Splatoon, and now Mario Odyssey already. Combine that with some truly special indie/smaller games and if it's not the best launch ever it's neck and neck with anything out there.

I've been tempted to pick up a switch. I never got into nintendo stuff aside from like pokemon when I was a kid. Nintendo seems to have recovered super well from Wii U so I've been giving them some looks again.

By BladeoftheImmortal Go To PostI agree. But this isn't the launch. Like others have said - the games that have come out since are spaced out evenly and kept us all occupied.

And while I agree that this isn't launch week. This is in my opinion one of the finest launch years for a console ever - and I've had pretty much every launch console and their respective standout games since the NES era...

It just seems right. Those, along with Ninty's output put the console over the top for me.
How do they keep doing it. I need to pick this up with my mass of GameStop Monopoly money from a few months back.
Just as a heads up - this is a game worth avoiding spoilers for. Go in as blind as you can. Seems weird to say about Mario but it very much applies here.

I don't think 7 months after a console launches can be considered its launch.
I've got a switch myself and love it. But the launch was quite barren. Let's not try to give it a win where it doesn't deserve it.
And I love my switch. Still going through golf story ATM. It's a great console with a strong first year. But I don't like calling it a launch
Because its launch was pretty bad besides BOTW.

The most important time frame is still the launch year. If you can keep the momentum going throughout a whole year, then you have a win.
If you would focus all the big guns in the first weeks of the launch, then it would look great on paper, but no one will have the time to get everything, and you spend ressources when they are actually not efficient.
Spread it out. Get into the news every few weeks/months. Keep being a topic people talk about.
That is the important one. It's not about giving a "win" to a launch line-up, it's about how the whole console has been perceived the last few months. And that... has been fantastic.

This feels a bit like a semantical argument. I should know, look at my tag.
Arguing semantics is totally fine, but you should know where the distinction lies. Technically, anything beyond the console's release date is outside of its launch, so you're right; on March 3rd, it did not have a very diverse line-up. However, the English language (like many languages) is very fluid and constantly evolving, and is not bound to such technicalities when speaking informally. That's why we have concepts such as colloquialism and vernacular. We don't comunicate with a syntax comprised of rigid definitions, but rather, flexible models of ideas that carry varying connotations. To put it succinctly, we gauge the context of words in order to derive their meanings.
In the case of the term 'launch', it has evolved into a concept of 'firsts'. First day, first week, first month, first year, it doesn't matter, launch can replace first in any of those cases and their meanings wouldn't change. The only thing that changes is the unit of time, and since time is relative to a person's perspective, its proper use really just depends on its context.
Ultimately, we have a rough idea of what the original person meant by 'launch' (within its first year) so why not just roll with what they meant instead of what was said? I just think that arguing the technicalities of the term doesn't really foster any kind of fruitful discussion, especially when a more interesting discussion can be had with respect to other console's first years.
That's my two cents anyway.
A new mainline Mario is one of the safest bets in gaming. Regardless, good to see that Nintendo have delivered once again.
I'm going to pick Odyssey up at midnight... then go to bed because I have work in the morning... after which I'll be busy with social activities all weekend... shit.
I feel utterly spoiled by the wealth of top-notch Nintendo games this year! Granted, there have been a few that I didn't care much for (1-2 Switch, ARMS, and Pokken DX), but everything else has ranged from good to extraordinary. If Xenoblade 2 also delivers (85+ meta)... I don't know... it almost seems too good to be true!
And the 3rd party support has been decent. Sonic Mania is my second favorite Switch game after BOTW, and I'm planning on getting Axiom Verge and Stardew Valley after I clear out some backlog space.
Edit: And DOOM! And Rocket League (if it isn't delayed to next year)! If the DOOM port is to my liking, I'll probably get Wolf 2 on Switch as well.

When I'm not broke as hell the switch is for sure gonna be on my list. Maybe used due to ninty's potential use of conflict minerals but still.

Wish me luck. I don’t want to get mugged
Stay safe!
By Oersted Go To PostPlayzine Russia, go get them clicks
Didn't give them a click, but read this quote from them on Metacritic:
Though a really neat game, Super Mario Odyssey is an utterly underwhelming adventure for every long-term Super Mario fan in existence. Unless Cappy brainwashed you. In that case, you are a satisfied zombie customer now. No, seriously, only a zombie would find a healthy challenge in this pleasant but disappointingly easy Super Mario Walk-in-the-park. Sorry - Odyssey
I... fuck it... no need to comment
This makes me wanna sell my graphics card to buy a Switch. I haven't been this excited for a Mario game since I was a little tike ripping the plastic off the Mario 64 box.
Anyone have any idea how long it will take to 100% the game with all collectibles and everything? Curious how long I’ll be glued to my switch for.

Yeah, but that has more to do with leftover development for arcade (aka make people die a lot so they spend more quarters) and the relative youth of the medium.
Uh, not sure how far back "old" means for everyone lol

3d mario is for brainwashed consumer zombies of the capitalists
To this day, I've never been Super Mario Bros 1 or 2 (either version) without save states. I didn't beat SMB3 until the Wii. NES games were hard.

They can be post credits. I gave up on the last level of Super Mario 3D World
