Review Thread - Mario Odyssey - Weather Prediction: RAINING 10'S- Embargo ends 10/26 6am PST
Props to PurpleMug for this pic!
Metacritic - 97 OpenCritic - 98 (currently the highest score ever)
Famitsu - 10/10/10/9
[*]Noted in the review, each stage is full of discoveries and surprises. The world with its realistic touch, which is unlike anything before, had quite an impact on the person playing the game, and feels this will make you want to continue your journey to new locations.
Edge - 10
[*]Odyssey feels like a true reinvention of the sandbox platformer
[*]Like Breath of the Wild, Odyssey is a new entry in a long-running series that belies its age with sprightly invention, taking big risks with an established formula, and having all of them pay off handsomely. Mario might be getting on a bit, then, but a dinosaur? This astonishing adventure proves he's anything but.

Pre-release OpenCritic average score prediction is sitting at 95 right now. I believe that may be the highest I've ever seen. Expectations are justifiably through the roof.
I'm not too much into each publication's scoring, but isn't an Edge 10 pretty sick or something? I remember that from the BotW threads.
By dude44 Go To Post7.8/10 Too many hatsThat's a reasonable criticism.
I'll take no loot boxes as a fair critique against it too.
By Falchion Go To PostSo excited for the embargo to be lifted, and then only one day before I'll be able to play my copy!i heard you can cop the game off japan eshop on thursday but i havent looked into it

Yes it is ;) They only gave a perfect score to 4 games this gen ( Bayonetta 2, Bloodborne, Zelda BotW and Super Mario Odyssey).
Funnily enough, their first and last 10/10 was for 2 Mario games : Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Odyssey. La boucle est bouclée.

Oh nice, I've already got my copy through Amazon all sorted so I probably won't bother with that but very cool for people that want it a little early. I'll treat Odyssey as my weekend reward.

C'est pas mal ça :) I might actually get to try it tomorrow, pretty hyped (though I don't have my own switch yet..)
I'm on the worst job site this week and the wait till Friday may actually kill me. At least the reviews on Thursday will be a huge pump up.
On a side note, I'm real interested to see how this goes here. I hope (pray?) it's less of a shit show than your average GAF review thread.

I think this will score 95+ on Metacritic, just so that Nintendo can finally ruin my life this year and make it impossible for me to avoid buying a Switch
Waiting to play this until I get a Switch is gonna be a pain in the ass. I hope there are some good Switch BF deals.
Be interesting to see how this thread develops, I've heard there aren't really console warriors here. But with the influx of gafugees, the flavor might change a bit. Hoping that isn't the case, but either way, I'm hype af.
By Fadeaway Go To PostI predict a 96.i’m feeling this too. solid 100 in my heart though
I can't help but feel this game will get knocked by some because there are just too many out there who don't like Sand Box style platforming. Or will think it's a step down from the streamlined Galaxy games.
Buying a Switch for Picross S, but I guess I can play this too. Unless it gets anything less than a 99.5 average. I only play the best games.
It would be nice if all the console warriors went to other forums, but I doubt it. GAF gaming side was basically Gamefaqs part 2.

I'm really curious what the common criticisms will be. With Zelda we had weapon degradation, dungeons, lack of story... Etc...
With this being a more traditional Mario game than BotW was a Zelda game I really have no idea what faults people will generally find.

I'm scared to read any reviews, I literally want to know the least amount of information as possible, but I also am curious to read reviews.
halp.

It'll score well, of course, but I don't think it'll generate that same feeling in critics of "this game is important to video games as a whole and you have to play it now" like BotW did.
By Haz Go To PostI'm scared to read any reviews, I literally want to know the least amount of information as possible, but I also am curious to read reviews.Honestly, if you're just reading it should be fine. Written reviews are usually pretty broad and tend to talk about concepts and mechanics more than setpieces or like, specific level designs.

It's the video reviews that got me sweatin'.
I shall be looking at the review scores and checking Metacritic. Not reading or watching reviews after being majorly spoiled on divine beasts and dragons in ign BOTW review.
By Not Go To PostAwesome, here's hoping for Galaxy 2 scoresThis will get Breath of the Wild scores my man.
Will only check the scores. Already seen too much from just the directs. Don´t wanna know any more.
Metacritic 96. It´s gonna be the shit.

By TheIlliterati Go To PostBotW is a severely overrated game.
By pbsapeer Go To PostOh, I know I'm in the minority there. Glad for people to love it, but there's little that's memorable about it to me and the mechanics made it a slog to play. I think it will age poorly.

You have my axe bro. Where the fuck are my dungeons? Shrines don't count.
I don't think BOTW is "overrated" -- I think it deserves its critical success, but that's not to say they can't significantly improve on the formula; the game does so much right but of course it does do some things questionably, although given the sheer breadth of the game you could definitely say it didn't have as much time in the oven as it ought to have.
On topic, I am curious as to why the Odyssey embargo is basically within 24 hours of launch, meanwhile the pre-order is already up, etc. As hyped as most people are, I'm not getting a sense of pervasive confidence and hype from Nintendo or other gaming avenues. I'm sure I'm being needlessly doubtful.

It's likely just a side effect of Nintendo being cautious about game leaks. They did the same thing with BotW.
And it's not all that crazy of a concern, since I believe the recent Mario and Luigi 3DS remake got completely leaked (like, the entire game file) online weeks before release. They're being a lot more careful about review copies due to that.
Late embargo is most likely due to the fact Nintendo doesn't want any details for this game to be out. Makes a lot of sense, as fuckers would spoil the ever living shit out of it.
I am going to go with a 94, sounds like the game is pretty easy and it might get docked for that a little. I am not complaining about that at all though. I have a tough time with platformers sometimes and honestly I want my son to really enjoy it.
I talked to an old classmate from highschool, who now works for an electronics/entertainment store (FNAC), who said one of his collegues is also a reviewer for some publication i 'd never heard of before, but that guys said the game was great, but fairly easy. Of course, i don't know if this guy tried to (remotely) get 100%, which generally makes a Mario game a lot harder, than just 'finishing' when you face off against bowser and call it a day.

At least the Switch isn't cracked or emulated yet, so they should be able to track down any errant downloads or review copies.

I'm pretty sure they were able to track the Mario and Luigi leak too, but not until it was already online. But yeah, I doubt anyone would be able to do the same for Odyssey, especially since they appear to have been a bit more selective with handing out review copies.
Anyway, just trying to pass the time while the game sits on my Switch home screen staring at me. I thought preloading was a good idea at first...
