I imagine I'd enjoy some of the goofy DBZ filler too, but I watched a bunch of it without ANY fucking reference for anything in the series and legit thought my friends were insane for being so into the anime.GT imo has actually a really strong end to it. The first half of the whole thing is forgettable and boring for me, but it did have its positives by the time I finished it so continue watching

Gohan is by far my favorite character in the show, and I think people upset because he isn't as strong as he used to be don't really understand the whole point of his existence.
Gohan was never to follow Goku's steps as savior of the planet/universe, in fact, he is quite the opposite of Goku, much moreso than Vegeta. Because he is half human, he puts his family in first place (which Goku never did), and he doesn't really like to fight, and only does if needed to protect his beloved ones (as opposed to Goku, who has put his friends and family at risk just so he could enjoy fighting a stronger enemy).
Gohan exists to show the humanity Goku lacks for being a Saiyan. His development in super is just a natural progression for his character. As I said, he is my favorite character, and I am enjoying very much seeing him happily living his dream of a family and being a scientist. Despite that, I do enjoy seeing him fighting, and would like to see him kick some ass in the future.

Gohan's my fave too but Toriyama has been so inconsistent in his writing in regards to Gohan that I understand the criticism of the character.
Toriyama has set him up on more than one occasion to be the MC or savior of the series but falls back to having Goku save the day.
Hints throughout the whole series at Gohan's untapped potential which climaxes during the Cell arc. Gohan concludes that he will fight to protect what he loves and kills Cell. Vegeta says he'll never fight again and Gohan is now the protector of the earth.
The problem is, that whole "Gohan doesn't like to fight came OUT OF NOWHERE". He already went through that character arc during the Cell Saga when he let Nappa fry Piccolo but ever since then, Gohan has never wavered to take on and kill enemies threatening his friends, ever. It was totally out of character. but all of a sudden after training in the Time Chamber, he's a pacifist and doesn't want to fight Cell?
Gohan never wanted to study and always wanted to go train and fight with Picollo and Goku. On Namek, Gohan was rushing everybody, Ginyu Force, Vegeta, Freiza etc. Didn't give any fucks. Here's a Kanzenshuu thread on it.
It's not that I don't like the change in character, I do, it makes him different but it was an asspull.
But anyways, as the newly crowned protector of earth, Toriyama has him not train for 7 years and brings back Goku. Ok yeah whatever.
Even the whole Buu arc was building towards Gohan being the savior again. Babidi's goons use Gohan's Ki to initiate Buu's resurrection, has the Supreme Kai have so much interest in him, give him the Z sword, have the Z sword turn into Old Kai which unlocks more of Gohan's power, even goes as far as to have Gohan wear Goku's outfit to go finish Buu off, but then dust him to the side 5 minutes later to have Goku save the day.

Whenever he got into a fight it was either because he had to protect someone or because someone made him do it. It's was like that when fighting Vegeta, when going to Namek (in that case he went there because he felt it was his duty to revive Picollo, not for the adventure), when training to fight Cell and when participating in the 24th Tenkaichi, and fighting Boo soon after.
It was never said explicitly he would prefer to be studying than fighting, but hey, that's what he did whenever he didn't have to fight. And he said a couple times his dream was to become a scientist. I do think his personality was very well defined.
But yes, some of the plots felt like they were leading to him taking Goku's place, specially during the Cell Saga. I see that as a consequence of Dragon Ball being published weekly, with constant input of different editors, and the pressure to keep the series going despite Toriyama's will to end it. I think he just wanted an easy way out of the series killing Goku at the end of the Cell games and passing the baton to Gohan, but then he was forced to keep drawing and that's why Goku came back as the protagonist eventually. In the manga, at the begining of Boo saga, Toriyama even notices that Gohan would be the hero from now on, but the editors input and the weekly feedback of the readers pushed Goku back, I suppose. It's one of those inconsistencies that affect every manga from jump; so far, I think only One Piece has been able to run freely according to it's author's planning.

Yo, someone making sense finally. Gohan is best Dragonball character, and the one with more layers then most characters of the series. Gohan is all you need, yinz better start preparing for his true return to form.

GT had the prefect idea on how to end DB and fumbled it completly. The idea that our heroes now have to pay for rlying on the Dragon Balls as much as they did. It brings the Dragon Balls back to forefront of the plot, creates a way to revisit and celebrate different highlighted moments in the series, and show actual consquence. Then they GT'd it.
I doubt they could revisit this with Suped Dragon Balls being a thing now, but I'd love evil Shenrons to somehow return.

Yup, that is why the original dragon ball is still my favorite series in dragon ball. I love the original story arcs, and Krillin, Tien, Jackie Shun, and King Piccallo as bad guys or rivals. A really wish the Z fighters would make a comeback somehow but that ship has sailed. Now its all about the Saiyans.
On a site note I was reading the Master Roshi wiki to remember the name Jackie Shun and just realized that he was over 300 years old even before Dragon Ball began (mind blown).
