When the Bandwagon Effect happens in an insular bubble like NeoGAF had become; passengers feel emboldened enough to sling unsubstantiated insults at the outlier. More like white blood cells invading an antibody, than expressing general disagreement. The moderating curated this culture.

When there's large disagreement with a minority in a civil discussion, there's a distinct lack of "otherization" that became way too common place on NeoGAF.

thats fair it just seems super hard for a forum to moderate something like that without becoming too draconian. You can perhaps encourage well thought out responses void of insults and reaction gifs, and to be fair I've seen gaf mods try and do that, but even still if multiple people are responding with paragraphs to a posts they disagree with then what's stopping that person from feeling like they been "dog piled" on?
