Only time HTTPS is most definitely used is on true information sensitive sites like your banking or Ebay.
Is this considered as an option?

Even the knowledge of the contents you read can be harmful in certain environments, let alone the username and password ...

If the symbol in your browser doesn't show it active, check to make sure the address starts with https://. If it still doesn't look right, that may be because someone embedded an image or other content that is not https.
