By reilo Go To PostIf you want dick pics, PM Apollo.
By Apollo Go To PostHe's not wrong tho
By Joeytj Go To PostYeah, and I don't mean to say that it "shouldn't matter" or that I don't care that I'm gay, far from it.
If it seemed like I implied that you meant that, sorry.
By Joeytj Go To PostI love movie soundtracks, classical music, videogame music and even stuff like national anthems, history of music, fictional universes, combining all that with politics, history, etc., it all was "weird" to most people.
To their credit, my parents always supported me and never doubted that what I really wanted for Christmas was the Star Trek Encyclopedia or atlases and books about astronomy and science..
I completely understand and have a similar experience. From a very young age, I've been in love with music and what some would deem as "high art". Classical music, ballet, opera, etc. Most kids have their go to cartoon that they watch constantly. While I did watch cartoons, I watched Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals as much as I watched Totoro. I'd put on films with Nino Rota's music just to hear the soundtrack. Never had anybody to share that with growing up, so I kept it to myself. The few times it was brought up, I was also called weird or people would say "why do you want to watch/listen to this boring stuff". To this day, I get called an "old white woman" for my tastes. But like you, I was lucky enough to have supportive parents (who also didn't discriminate against my sexuality).
Edit: not to mention having those interests and being a PoC and some people having the mindset of doing or liking something (and talking a certain way) is for white people only.

You sound like me, lol. As a black boy who was attracted to boys, played the violin, listened to classical music, didn't like sports, had 'nerdy' interests, and didn't believe in God, I was a complete and utter outcast in most facets of society. I've been on a long road to acceptance, but I couldn't be more thrilled with who I am now.

Coming from cultures that are usually heavily religious (Hispanic and Haitian/Black), I kept it a secret and pretended until 9th grade. But like you, I love who I am now and am so happy I've learned to accept myself.
I'm glad most people like us come to accept themselves in adulthood and it makes me happy to connect with people who have had similar experiences.
By reilo Go To PostI updated the thread cover with something that didn't have those stock photography watermarks, hope you don't mind!It looks way better, thanks!

By halfbeast Go To PostI believe that penises have to follow the same rules as movies:
show, don't tell.
that is all. :)
I though the punchline would be remember to thank Harvey Weinstein afterwards. Although that's a bit dark.
Also, Apollo:
By Laboured Go To PostHey reilo can we got a dick pic OT going m8?
This is a bad idea. But this is a better idea than having it in this thread, so if that's what it takes...
i have a question. and please tell me if it's a stupid one.
Why is it LBGTQ and not QLTBG? with the latter you could have the awesome moniker "quilt bag"
also, this is a really stupid question

It's just a simple evolution of the term over time. It used to be just 'the gay community', then 'the LGB community', then LGBT, then LGBTQ (and a host of other variants like LGBTQIA), now it's LGBTQ+ (or just LGBT+) or 'letters community'. These iterations were an evolving solution to making sure the community was as inclusive as possible to anyone who was not heterosexual and/or cis-gender, but we also needed something that wouldn't be too inconvenient to write or say, so here we are.
It looks pretty silly in hindsight but it is what it is, lol
QUILTBAG actually totally is a thing in some circles.

Of course, though I don't see it being universally accepted. It's hard to take seriously. We'll see, I guess.
It is a little unwieldy, and yes, I sincerely doubt it will catch on as much as the other monikers have. Personally i tend to use "queer" as a catch-all term for multiple identities across the spectrum, though it's not a perfect term and I do understand the objection that some have to the word, but I'm in the mindset of using the word as positivity and empowerment with the understanding that we are different but that different is not a bad thing. But I understand that I'm in a relative (but large) minority on that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I agree with you here. In fact, considering that there's no known definition for my sexual orientation, I'm pretty sure that queer is about the only thing that fits, as broad as it is.
Hey, folks..straight guy here. Asked this question on that other forum a while back, but always curious to hear other opinions.
I'm a fan of the Amazon show, Transparent. It's a subject that was pretty foreign to me up until I became a bouncer in South Beach years ago. Also a bit after I joined GAF and heard stories, good or bad, from people in that community. Was wondering if any of y'all here watch it, and if you see any positives/negatives with it.
I've heard some folks aren't fans of Tambor portraying a trans woman..what are y'alls thoughts?

I'm not really qualified to criticize the show about how well it addresses trans issues, as I'm not trans, and I've only watched a few episodes, but I've heard both good and bad things from the trans community about the show. The main takeaways are that the show is good for exposure to cis-gender people. Just starting the conversation is important. However, trans actors should be playing trans roles. It's not about acting skills, it's about representaron, and trans actors are still getting snubbed on roles because of their circumstances.
At this point, even the show's director agrees with the above sentiments, so I'm inclined to support their opinions on the matter. Doesn't mean that the show isn't good, or that trans people don't like it, just that there are problems that need to be taken into consideration when making a show like this.

Hello, again, brainchild!
So, as an outsider, I can absolutely understand folks wanting trans playing trans characters. But that's the thing..there ARE trans playing trans folks..to a shocking degree, in fact. I never imagined seeing a show like this. First thing that comes to mind is just people boycotting Amazon. They clearly gave zero fucks and have been pumping season after season, which I think is a great thing!
Back to that subject..yeah, I can see where folks might be a little sour. Possibly taking it as if he's being a caricature. I just look at the exposure for the real trans women on the show as a plus? Like, they aren't steering clear or trying to make some "comfortable" or some shit. Again, some I've asked have been pretty fine with it..some not so much..but I like to hear from people about these kind of subjects.
Thanks for your input.

I was mostly referring to main characters for high profile TV shows and movies, like the one for Transparent. Many trans people feel that the character should have been played by an actual trans woman. The director of Transparent now agrees with this opinion and feels she made a mistake in casting Tambor for the role.
When any minority group complains about representation in the media, they're not talking about secondary roles, or simply playing any character (although that's always nice to have). They're talking about giving those minorites important or primary roles that leave a strong, positive impression about them. This is absolutely not a thing right now with high profile trans roles. For one, 'high profile trans roles' hardly exist, and for the ones that do, they're not normally played by trans actors, and when they are, they hardly leave a strong, positive impression of the character.
Lots of work to be done on all fronts of minority representation in media, but I am glad that a show like Transparent exists.
Also, nice to see you still posting here!
I usually describe my sexuality as queer as I can find some men sexually attractive, but I'm not interested in romantic relationships, so if I say I'm bisexual it makes men think I'm available. Although, if I thought you were cute enough I would probably be down for some naughty business, but with my taste in men that would probably be a very rare occurrence.
