By FatRiker Go To PostI liked this ep, though I think it was weaker than last weeks. I'm not a fan of Sarek's actor.Just saw this. Hell yeah, Season 2.
I've got a theory - Ash Tyler being hinted as a Klingon spy is a misdirection and Lorca is actually a double agent of some sort. Like he's a secret Romulan or something
Also, Season 2.
By Meus Renaissance Go To PostIs there any reason why Spock can't make an appearance in Discovery? It might be more interesting if they could weave Sybok into the plot
By spookyghost Go To PostI like Tilly, her interactions with Michael have been essential for expanding Michael's character.I am enjoying just how different Tilly and Michael are from each other. Tilly's "fear based reactions" are not as interesting as Saru's though, so it feels redundant.
By golem Go To PostIt might be more interesting if they could weave Sybok into the plotAgreed, I always felt that Sybok was an interesting character with a lot of potential. But I also like Star Trek V unironically so maybe my opinions are bad.
I found it difficult to get into the most recent episode simply because the main plot didn't have too much weight for me; knowing the ultimate outcome, whether that truly mattered for the story they wanted to tell or not, meant it didn't engage me. Some nice details came about regarding Michael, but I feel like I already knew about why Sarek was upset with Spock. Maybe I made it up in my head that I knew the reason why, but still. That (TNG spoiler) Sarek ultimately never reconciled with Spock until he died, leaving Picard feeling that he owed it to Sarek to pass on his feelings about his son, was something I found more poignant than the revelation that came in the episode.
Ultimately, I did enjoy the episode though. Tilly continues to be a beacon of optimism that I really wish the show embraced more of, mostly because that's how I prefer my Trek, but I'll take it from her character for the time being. I've been enjoying Discovery on the whole even though it's not really what I wanted from a new Trek show (again, optimism!) but it's on the right side of good so that's enough for me. I do hope with the second series they tidy up the writing though, there's been a few wobbly things.

Yeah, after watching this episode I am starting to expect that Ash could be a red herring. Lorza was also pretty adamant about sending Cornwell to the peace talks just after she threatened to take away his command.
If Lorca is indeed anything less than legit, then it would undermine one of Discovery's characteristics; human beings behaving human.
By Meus Renaissance Go To PostIf Lorca is indeed anything less than legit, then it would undermine one of Discovery's characteristics; human beings behaving human.Agreed. Completely ruins what makes his character interesting.
Love this show. The hate it's getting from some trekies is crazy. This is some of the best trek media I've ever seen. I was surprised that Micheal is Spoks 'sister', has her character ever been mentioned elsewhere?
The latest episode is the first one I actually enjoyed from start to finish. Curious to see how far the go with it

So they took that grey area and ran with it.

Yeah, the set-up with Sarek & Picard in the first episode of Reunification, leading to the very simple, yet poignant Picard & Spock scene at the end of the second episode had an emotional weight to it that Discovery hasn't found yet. Whether it was Stewart & Nimoy's performance, the score, or even the lighting or what, I don't know, but the way they sold a heavy moment with a light touch is impressive in hindsight. It was something TNG did very well (and became progressively poorer with subsequent Treks).
I hope that they expand the scope beyond Burnham's POV in the second season and allow it to become an ensemble show (which is where it seems to be going with each passing episode), or maybe switch it up and follow someone else's POV for a season.

Despite having been raised a Vulcan, Michael hasn't shown any of those mannerisms since the pilot episode. Since then, she has shown plenty of emotion and human mannerism. She doesn't seem to struggle with that all. Seven of Nine, however, took several seasons to reach this point.
Having said that, Seven of Nine wasn't the leading character of the story, so I imagine it's difficult for the actress to navigate this thin line. You couldn't have Zachary Quinto's Spock, for example, lead a series on his own.

There's something about her portrayal that seems off, but to be fair, they mention that she's been on the Shenzhou for seven years before the pilot episode. In the two flashbacks that show her prior to joining Starfleet, she seems more Vulcan-y than she is now.
From a character perspective, she's someone who's trying to find her place. She was raised by Vulcans and tried to fit in with them but was rejected, then she found a home on the Shenzhou but it seems like she really only clicked with the Captain whom she betrayed and got killed, and now she's on this ship full of weirdos. Maybe that's what's leading to the choices Martin-Green is making with her portrayal.
The fact that she was raised by Sarek was literally in the first episode, I don't think that's still a spoiler like six episodes in.
OK a bit behind, just watched 4. Really into Michael and the Captain now. They just gotta flesh out the crew. *Backs out to avoid spoilers*

Need to finally watch ep 6 tomorrow.

fuckboy reviewers almost made me ignore this

I really enjoyed this week's episode. It reminded me a lot of one of the better TNG episodes. This season has been rather varied but I've really enjoyed it.
Anyone still watching this? The mid season finale was good. I enjoy the show overall. It has a positive vibe and is generally light hearted. Good contrast to so many "dark" shows I currently watch.
Yeah this has been fantastic. I thought last week was a little weak but I see now that it was a big setup for this week, and I really liked the mid season finale. I like their story arc setup so far.
