A loving place for us disciples of satan to discuss artists, songs, news, labels, spotify playlists, and all that goes with the genre of the devil!
I was thinking of doing a primer of sorts, a Genre | Band - Song list here... not doing all the genras myself, I was thinking this list could be the first collaboration to let us slaenters know eachothers opinions :) So feel free to suggest genres, subgenres and bands and songs to the list!

So many different types of Metal it all gets a bit confusing so a guide like this is a good idea. Mathcore sounds like a college course.
Loving the Rammstein suggestion though. Wish they would do a proper UK tour again.

I think discussions about subgenras is one of the best thing about music in general :P There is nothing more fun than to discuss minute details of a song and if its Subgenra #1 or Subgenra#2 based on a note or lyrical content hehe
I could never wrap my head round it. For example nu metal was peaking when I was like 13 and really getting into music. Always annoyed me when people slagged it off because yeah fair enough listening back Korn, Limp Bizket etc. were a bit naff but I still really like bands like Rage Against The Machine, System Of A Down and Deftones but then someone told me they were not actually "nu metal" so fuck it.

Wouldn't those be Nu Metal per definition though? I have no problem putting those there, like what else are they? They are too plain to be prog, and too niche to be any other imo
Dillinger in the OT makes me a happy man. Last tour in Europe was cut short the first time around, due to the bus crash, but managed to see them 5 times before the crash. Then went to Germany to see the last two in Europe before the retirement, when they returned after the crash. Fucking amazing moments. Cologne and Leipzig was madness, with stage invasions every day.
God Mother support was great as well, their new album just dropped and is up for streaming. Can recommend listening through. Number twelve looks like you were pretty cool as well.
Of none Dillinger shit (which is my absolutely favorite band and I cry for quitting every night), I was at Copenhell this year which had some cool things. Batushka was the most evil shit I have ever listened to, I am pretty sure people were praying to Satan during that show all around us. System of a down were boring as fuck, felt like they didnt want to be there for anything bu the pay check. Opeth cool as always. Every time I die was an experience as well, they were missing their singer, so they had mostly the vocalist of Architects there and some guest singers filling in the role, including a random guy from the crowd.
What I had looked forward to the most however was Architects, I never really got into them before all our gods have abandoned us, but damn man, what an album that is. Heavy shit knowing the theme of the lyrics with one of the members being deadly sick of cancer (and dying shortly after). Sadly the electricity kept cutting out, due to heavy rain... So in the end, they only played like 4 maybe 5 songs and then had to quit. They stood in the pouring rain with us for well over 40 min trying to fix it, but nothing. Was quite sad about that.

So I'm just wandering into random slaent threads kinda like checking out the amenities at a hotel you're staying at. I feel like this is a whole world I never knew existed.
A new Ne Obliviscaris? Sweet!
I'm currently listening to a bit of (Funeral) Doom, seems topical 😏
I can gladly recommend "No Stars Upon the Bridge" by Hallatar (Doom) and "Mirror Reaper" by Bell Witch, a nice 83-minute single-track album.

First video from them and the first single off URN.
Gonna be seeing them with Allegaeon next month.

I recently saw a photo of Seth Putnam shooting up, while getting a blowjob. It made me respect grindcore a lot.
There is a clear lack of The Legends in this thread. Feel free to debate, but these musicians set the stage for heavy metal, even if they only ever saw themselves as rock n' roll.
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
Led Zeppelin
Mountain
Cactus
Ronnie James Dio
I could go on and on, really, and it pains me to only post one video from each artist.

So sorry for the missed thread! I searched but couldnt find one, promise! /feels ashamed
I'll add Grindcore, ofc! But what band/song though?
I purposfully tried to stay away from "legend" bands, just to promote newer stuff :) But we can have a Legends corner :)

updated the op with a SLAENT Legends bar as well :) I'm thinking one of each letter in the alphabet, if any of the ones I've written in should be changed, and what more should be up there, shout it out!

Some quick takes on albums I've heard recently:
Arch Enemy - Will To Power: absolute basura
Contortionist - Clairvoyant: bland. I'm not sure which fans this appeals to.
NeO - URN. Aces!
Allegaeon - Proponent for Sentience. Eh overall, but some gems.

Just curious on your viewpoint.First of all the relative age of the band/artist, they should have been active (or at least close to starting) in the early days of metal ie. the 70s imo. And then just my personal preference lol. The list is far from complete or accurate as such :P We could do a poll for whats on each letter!
Also - sorry for the dp - what should we put under Speed Metal? I know its close to Power Metal, maybe too close... but there have to be some bands clocking in on speed more than power...
Yay! The metal community! Hail Satan!
For speed metal this first thing that comes to mind is Ride the Sky by Helloween or Majesty by Blind Guardian, but those are speed metal in the 'proto european power metal' sense of the term (or is european power metal just melodic speed metal????). Other songs i'd call 'speed metal' would be Thundersteel by Riot and Painkiller by Judas Priest. Speed metal is a tough one because a lot of 'fast heavy metal songs' are just called power metal (or sometime thrash) so its one of the more tough to pin down metal genres if you ask me.
Stuff i've been listening to:
Gutslit - Amputheatre. Sick death metal from India.
Cytotoxin - Radiophobia. Fun tech-death, with breakdowns and bree brees no less!
Relics of Humanity - Stench of Burning Heavens. A.J. Magana back on vocals! Totally SICK brutal death metal.
Archspire - Relentless Mutation. INSANE tech-death. As a bassist myself the bass playing on this album blows me away. Check this shit out
Logistic Slaughter - Corrosive Ethics. I checked these guys out because their vocalist is now the vocalist for Parasitic Ejaculation (one of my favorite bands) and boy howdy do they rock. Pretty damn heavy if you ask me. Can't wait to hear this dude on the next Parasitic Ejaculation release!!!

Hey everyone. GAF refugee here. Glad there is a metal thread popping up here. Was probably my most active thread there
New Bell Witch, Yellow Eyes, and Amenra albums are all pretty much 10/10 albums and came out last week. I can't stop listening to all of them. What a week it's been for new metal.

So glad to see a metal thread! For my recommendations I really like the new Enslaved E album, so good. The newest Cattle Decapitation - The Anthropocene Extinction is also excellent if grind is your thing. The album I've been listening to most is Carach Angren - Dance and Laugh Amongst The Rotten. Certainly a Cradle-ish vibe yet different. Give it a listen if you like horror concept albums.

I'm not super familiar with the genre beyond a couple of bands, but anyone have any suggestions for something that's similar to the bands I have listened to? -- Protest The Hero, Rage Against the Machine, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Led Zepplin.

He's been cooking that solo stuff for quite some time. Hope it'll be on par with his SS albums. And that EHC will one day return.

For Megadeth I'd probably say the first four Metallica albums (and they don't really sound all that much like 'Deth). Other than that I can't think of anything quite like them.
For Maiden you might wanna check out melodic heavy/power metal like Judas Priest, Manowar, Battle Beast, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Tierra Santa, Bruce Dickinson solo, Ghost B.C. and Ghost Avenue.
Hey! Great to see the metal community here. Went to the Helloween reunion tour last saturday and it was a blast! So crazy to see their 3 singers getting along in the same stage. Bands sometimes do this with guitarists (think Maiden with Gers/Smith) but we're talking about two successful voices who divided the fanbase since the 90s.

Saw them live last year (I thinķ?). Was cool seeing them, although I stopped caring about their album releases by The Dark Ride. Helloween from Walls of Jericho to Better than Raw was best 'Ween. I even liked some of the stuff on Pink Bubbles go Ape and Chameleon.
Metal Jukebox can DIAF tho.

It is funny they're considered fathers of Power Metal and most modern Power bands don't sound like them at all, kids just copy Stratovarius these days.
By Scottify Go To PostHow did Michael Kiske sound? He was my favorite of their singers. I saw a youtube vid of him with Kai Hansen & Friends and he sounded really good even then. His voice is usually the same since he was semi-retired for almost 20 years. He wasn't at his best in Mexico because apparently he arrived with flu, so he sang like an octave lower in some songs.
But I saw him with Unisonic in their first tour and I can say his unreal range and high notes are almost intact.
By Scottify Go To Post@Combichristoffersen – The Dark Ride was a really good newer album too. Felt like a return to form.
I could never get into TDR. The sound was just not what I wanted from Helloween in that it was much heavier and darker than their usual stuff. I liked what they played live from their latest album though.

What's your guys' opinions on metalcore stuff like Trivium?
By Adam Go To PostNice, I like that Scar Symmetry song, so I'll check more of it out.Personally I get an embarrassed feeling for metalcore. I imagine singers in v-necks and clean clothes and all uptight, and with not an inch to spare with tattoos on their bodies, trying to "be metal" but not succeeding :P But that's just me, no offence given to anyone listening and liking metalcore. It's just not my cup of tea.
I'll check out the other bands too!

Will add the genra though, just as Nu is :)
Cool to see a metal thread here. I love me some metal as well, of many different subgenres. Massive fan of Ayreon and Blind Guardian. Also big on bands like Iron Maiden, Kamelot, Opeth, Megadeth, old school In Flames etc.
Album of the year is without a doubt Ayreon - The Source for me (In general, not only counting metal).

Ah hell yeah. Going to see Dying Fetus tomorrow. Last week was Kataklysm... yeah, Fall is starting good for me.
Oh Album Of The Year.... havent thought about that for a while. I really really like Metallicas Hardwired... and Pallbearers Heartless, Paradise Losts Medusa, but for me, thus far the biggest impact it had on me listening to it is Body Count - Bloodlust. It's both current and classical, and it has heart and anger. All the things a metal album should have. with that said though, Blvt Aus Nord is coming out this fall with some new stuff, and I just know in my heart it's gonna be special <3
