"software emulation of complete systems"
Emulation was a very big portion of my gaming life in my teenage years, and it's still the best way to have a collection and relive your young days.

May be a bit old and outdated now, but the Wii is an emulation powerhouse. From Atari to N64, you can build your library on your SD card or USB
Up to date Systems
3ds.guide 3DS Homebrew Hacking Guide
New 3DS is, in my opinion, the best handheld console ever made for emulation until the switch opens like a cracker. Use the above page to get your 3DS up to speed.

Vita means life, if you have a 3.65 console. The native emulators are not so optimized, but offer a better experience than the old PSP

WiiU is a very capable machine. Sadly, the homebrew community is not as active and the potential is untapped.

Previously you needed Nesticle + Zsnes + Snes9x + Neorage. Now everything is in this sexy pack. Can be complicated to understand but a bit of reading is all you need.
https://retropie.org.uk/ Raspberry PI
Some would say that the PI is the cheapest way to get you started on emulation. From tinkering your settings to downloading premade images, the PI changes the landscape. You no longer need to hack a console now. Emulates up to PSOne tho
NEW Snes Mini Hackhi2
The GOAT system gets the GOAT controller and with Hakchii2 you have, pretty much, the perfect emulation package (With 1 GB or storage space) I have not tested this. Credit to the original Poster in GAF (RIP) Robin64

Emulation and homebrew is great especially on portables. My PSP and 3DS are constantly in use because of it. Love using my Wii hooked up to a cr as well, it's about as good as using the real consoles and the classic controller pro is amazing. Also iirc vita can only be natively hacked on 3.60, 3.65 only has vhbl for PSP homebrew.
I'm a Retropie fan.
My main jam is golden age arcade games, from the 80s.
I haven't done all the cool name cabinet stuff, but I did spring for a huge dual stick setup

I'd really like to get a decent emu box setup going.
Can you guys recommend a decent usb arcade stick - especially if it can support 2 players for stuff like Metal Slug and 2d beat em ups?

I have my retropie stocked, but modding the SNES classic has been an amazing experience. Everything is just so streamlined and the emulator on the thing for SNES games is just some top notch stuff.
I could never get N64 emulation working well on the Wii, which is my emulator box hooked up to the tv. Did it improve over the last couple years?
just picked up a raspberry pi 3 for my retro gaming. This thing by far though heats up much more than my Pi2 ever did though. It gives me the thermostat icon just using a CRT filter.....I don't remember having heating issues with the Pi2. However though, the Nvidia shield by far and away has the strongest hardware for any emulation currently out there, that I ever used. It's a really solid pairing of hardware, only issue is you have to rely on android apps to fill any voids for emulation you don't have and they are all solo apps instead of being built into one device/place like the raspberry pi/retropie setups
I dream of a SNES Mini and a GPDWin *drools*
Yes, the Pi3 requires a good heatsink and even a fan. A cheapo one will NOT do the trick on a hot day. If the Shield weren't so expensive...
The way to go is the VC Emulator... so it's not entirely "homebrew" but you can emulate games that were not released officially

Fantastic. Hopefully we can grow to where system specific home brew threads will be needed. PSP home brew literally got me back into gaming. I still have mine although it hasn't been turned on in years. I remember the day I was able to jailbreak it. First time I jail broke anything. So cool to play SNES games on the go.
3DS Emulation (Specifically on a 2DS) reignited my love for videogames. Hacking is half the fun. I remember the EmuNAND days, then went to ARM9Loader, and now we have Boot9Strap.
PSP Emulation was solid, but everybody says it plays SNES games. It doesn't. It lacks the horsepower.
Vita was a godsend when it was unlocked, but alas, Henkaku freezes on me like a motherfucker, so I updated it. Might get another one hacked.

I won an Nvidia Shield TV from their Facebook about a year ago. I've just been using it for Plex and Netflix so far really.
Up to what level would that be useful for emulation? I'm assuming somewhere close to PS1?
If I can use that arcade stick with it I might be onto a winner for some retro gaming in the bedroom.

I'm psyched this thread exists. I'm about to delve into building my own emulator using RPi3 and RetroPi. If anyone has any suggestions or things to look out for give me the heads up! Really hoping I can get the old NES, SNES, and Sega games I had when I was a kid.

Make sure you get a good heatsink
Reminder that with ENSO you don't need to rerun Henkaku on reboots.

Using a PS Classic with BleemSync for retro games. It's rather hard to set up and certain games don't run well but once you know what you're doing and find the right cores it's a breeze.
Forgot we had this thread. PCSX2 for PS2 had its first update in over four years earlier this month. It's a shame, though, how spotty emulation can still be for that console, especially for the Xenosaga series. Can't run at full 60 fps with software rendering on a 2700x and gpu rendering results in visual artifacts despite using some of the compatibility fixes.
