By Convas Go To PostYeah, that Halo 5 video sold me. I'm getting one for my birthday in the next two weeks, hopefully. Need dat Halo 5 and Quantum Break in my life.
The QB upgrade looking real solid too.
You pretty much have to get an external HDD. A lot of games going beyond 100GB with the 4k assets . QB like 170GB with the TV episodes 🤣
Can anyone recommend a good USB 3.0 enclosure for me?
I have an extra 1TB 2.5 drive that I can use with my X but there are a lot of options for enclosures and I'm not sure which to go with.

I am surprised to hear Jeff Bakalar saying that the HDR effect on X1X is way more prominent and more impactful than 4k. Isn't 4K a whole new level of picture quality? thought that was the big deal when one sees it first time. I honestly thought of HDR as just a bit of an upgrade in tonal saturation in colours and Black and White Levels

It's about colors, varied brightness levels, and contrast ratio which is a bigger deal since the non-HDR space is relatively constrained compared to HDR and what our eyes see in real life.

What kind of surround sound set up is everyone running?

He's right. 4k gives better *clarity*, but HDR delivers more impact. When HDR is implemented well along with 4k?
I cancelled my XBX preorder on the premise that I can play everything but Halo on my 4k tv with my PC, but I didn't take into account the range of HDR enabled games that are going to be on the console vs the fuckery on PC.

Looking forward to seeing what this console can do.
Microsoft says its going to concentrate on first party games again, which a great sign as I feel we've been lacking with only a few standout 2nd party games here and there (<3 Sunset Overdrive).
“We need to grow, and I look forward to doing that,” Spencer said. “Our ability to go create content has to be one of our strengths. We haven’t always invested at the same level. We’ve gone through ups and downs in the investment.”I feel like I've heard Phil say stuff like this in the past, but hopefully with the release of the Xbox One X, Microsoft won't simply depend on third parties to fill it with games.

I still remember them opening new studios a couple years back, and The Coalition is the only one still standing. Like, it blows my mind that for a company with their history in the strategy genre, they don't have a studio in-house that can make one and have to outsource to Creative Assembly and Relic.

My baseless speculation says they probably attempt to bring in studios like Ruffian, Sumo, Undead Labs, and Playground into the fold. They all have a history of working closely with Microsoft and it would make sense for them to try and build their stable out that way. (Well, if Crackdown 3 is good.) If they open up any new studios, I'd hope they'd get weird and take another crack at MGS Japan.

And until I see results, Phil can talk and repeat his usual phrases again and again.
By Pennywise Go To PostThey closed it. Ensemble studios :PThe story about Ensemble and the Halo Wars development in "Blood, Sweat, and Pixels" makes it really easy to understand why they closed the studio down. (Some percentage of the studio didn't want to work on Halo Wars and used Microsoft's money to work on a game MGS already told them they wouldn't greenlight.)
And until I see results, Phil can talk and repeat his usual phrases again and again.
I know they were trying to staff for a new RTS studio a couple years ago, but it never got off the ground. If they actually put in the money to pursue new studios, that should really be a top priority.
Honestly I hope Microsoft doubles down on games, because with the Xbox One X and Windows 10 they are in a position to sell a lot of games, even if they aren't single player blockbusters like Naughty Dog is doing. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft did some big name purchases over the next year like with Mojang/Minecraft as Nadella said recently that he is fully behind Phil Spencer and gaming in the "new" Microsoft so I read that as meaning that Phil/Xbox has a lot more leeway.

The X enhancements on Gears 3 are stunning. Still gorgeous.
Alan Wake had an update for me last night, too. That game would benefit a ton from the X. Lord.

wow
wew lad if i didn't have a 7 year old pc that could run oblivion like that, i'd be all over an x.
Serious though, fucking great stuff. Really hoping console BC is the norm from now on. It's one of the strongest features of PC gaming. Sony can't really afford to drop the ball on this next gen.
Microsoft's commitment to backwards compatibility is commendable and makes me feel more comfortable about buying things through their ecosystem. I shouldn't lose access to games because of an arbitrary limit that says these aren't playable on this new box because we said so.
I bought an Xbox 360 launch day 12 years ago (against all odds, it still works) with Kameo and I can still put that disc in my Xbox One and it'll work. And that's rad.

If only they could commit to newer games as much as they do to older ones.
Bants aside, do people use it that much though?
I have a fully functioning PS3 with BC and used it once ?

I still play games that are like 15+ years old on pc.
By Facism Go To PostI still play games that are like 15+ years old on pc.Yup.
Allthough it depends.
This year I hardly managed to play anything old due all those releases and the existing backlog.
Would gladly play Kotor, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect trilogy or others again, but that's like the only argument for an X1X for me. I just don't care about their current catalogue and I won't spend 500€ for some multiplatform games and BC, while I still got a shitload of games I got to finish on the PS4 and there is another alternative with the Switch that might pull me over sooner or later.
By RobNBanks Go To PostSmokey I can’t get that Warzone video to play, does it work for anyone else?No problem here.
I’m loving the system, the upgrades in quality is just immense despite a meaty update.
But I have got a issue, which is annoying me to no end. I’ve only got one 4K and HDR output on the TV, looking to purchase a splitter to go between the PS4 Pro and Xbox One any recommendations? I’m using the one HDMI at the moment, but it’s a headache to keep taking it out.

You probably want something like this. Looks to be able to be able to handle bandwidth of 4k and also allows for HDR

Having seen so many crazy Elder Scrolls mods over the years kind of dampens the impact on that one for me, but it's still cool that they're doing it.

Isn't RTS kind of a dead genre these days?
By livefromkyoto Go To PostIsn't RTS kind of a dead genre these days?I mean, Microsoft is still committed to making them. They just contract them out through Sega's studios. Halo Wars 2 came out this year, and I don't know numbers, but they did put out an expansion pack for it last month. Age of Empires 4 is coming next year, too, along with HD remakes of the older games.

All 360 games on this list work on the X, but there are additional games that are X enhanced and you can use the filter at the top of the page to see those seven.
So 430 X360 games. That's pretty good!
Look forward to seeing how many more are patched. Skate 3 is a hell of a shout.

Microsoft is also emulating the original Xbox which had a Nvidia GPU in it, all by software, and Sony can't figure out how to let you change your name on PSN.

Yup, Sony are a bag of shit when it comes to backwards compatibility. The original 60Gb/20Gb PS3 had hardware emulation for the PS2, then they stripped it out of the PS3 when they released a cheaper to produce model (80Gb I think), then sold PS2 games wrapped in an emulator on PSN.
I'm glad MS are making a solid push for BC. It's not gonna sell me on an X1 or X1X, but for the preservation of older games, it's truly a great thing.
Skate 3 looks fucking incredible. I cannot believe what the BC team did. RDR deserves this treatment.

Anyone else getting badly crushed blacks in 4KHDR Netflix streams?
I just did a quick comparison between a specific pitch black scene in Stranger Things between the X and my KS8000's built in Netflix app and the X is putting out greyish/blacks while the TV app is putting out proper dark blacks.
The settings/wiring is correct but not sure if this is just a continuation of the strange gamma curve MS systems use. Sucks as I wanted to use this for 4K Blu rays.

I think it's a continuation of the bad gamma curve. It's why I bought a standalone UHD player. I read that the BR app on X1 was awful.
