Does anyone know when the review embargo lifts? Is it at midnight tonight or some time tomorrow morning?
By Sleepless Go To PostI'm waiting for it to ship from Walmart Canada as well. The only game I've ever pre-ordered there did arrive on time so here's hoping. That's good to hear, I really hope we both get it day of!
Oh man, I just finished Mario & Rabbids 30 minutes ago, have all weekend to play. Going to devour this game. Going straight from work to Bestbuy to be there at 11:00pm to pick up my copy. Can’t believe we’re already nearly 24 hours away from release. Felt like yesterday that we got the trailer announcement back in January.
Does anyone know if the joycons will be sold separately? I haven’t seen the Splatoon ones outside of bundles here in the US.

EDIT: Just checked, yup.
For any Aussies, Big W has it for $62 but isn't taking pre-orders so need to come in tomorrow to grab it.
By Melkaz Go To PostCan't wait until the pre order arrives Friday. This has been the first pre-order I did since…WoW expansion packs back around 2010!Brother? Seriously, that is exactly me as well. Heck, I never even got around to 3D Land. So much in my backlog. I’m trying not start another game until I finish the one I’m working on first. Like today I just beat Mario & Rabbids at the 40 hour mark, only beating the first world 100%, 85% of treasures, 23% challenge missions. Feels bad I haven’t put a lot of time into Splatoon or Arms, but if I’m beating other games than it’ll be fine otherwise. My Wii U was basically for Splatoon only when it came out.
However, I have to admit I never finished Galaxy 1, never started Galaxy 2 and only slightly enjoyed 3d world. What's wrong with me! In my defense I adore 3d Land!
Alright, quick analysis of that character model reveals some pretty interesting findings:
- Significantly higher poly than regular gameplay
- BRDF lighting model
- Lambertian reflections on Mario's hat/shirt
- Very subtle SSS on Mario's ears
- High resolution self-shadowing/transparency
- Radiosity (look at the color under his visor/chin)
If the game isn't using traditional PBR, it's using a similar concept. The textures seem to act more like materials (with albedo value) than typical diffuse/specular maps. This isn't too surprising as 3D World/Captain Toad did something similar with its environments.
I can't imagine that all of this was only done for one character model in a menu screen. I'll know for sure when I play it for myself in a few days, but I'm pretty impressed with the lighting model so far.

Even though I played almost 1 and a half hours of the demo I'm still finding some new stuff like I tried long jumping to the dunes while i was on the tower and I thought it would take me to the tiki dudes but it took me to a new area with a temple that had a Capture challenge. This game is gonna be great.
The individual cues from the soundtrack are now being posted on youtube. I don't know if I can resist...
By meppi64 Go To PostAlso, I just watched the 3rd episode of "the history of the 3D Mario games" on youtube and it really got me hyped up even more.I'm not usually like this, but...holy shit I absolutely cannot stand the way that guy speaks. It's too bad, because the videos seem really well researched and put together.
Really well put together.
I’ve tried reading/watching very little after the first initial trailer came out because, hey it’s a Mario game, I knew I was gonna get it. But I can’t resist now and am watching all the videos of it I can and I gotta say this game is gonna be the only thing played on my switch for a very long time. The game cart is gonna live in my switch for the next few months for sure.
By brainchild Go To PostAlright, quick analysis of that character model reveals some pretty interesting findings:Thanks for the great insight. Fascinating stuff. I'll have to keep an eye out for your posts like these. I've only done toon shading stuff so I don't know much outside of that.

Yeah my Nintendo UK order still hasn't dispatched. I'm pretty convinced it won't arrive. Anyone else had experience with them?
Cancelled my amazon.fr pre-order and went for the South African eShop pre-order instead. I'm pre-loading now.

6 more hours! Just checked my order, it's currently being packed! Also got the afternoon off from work so double yay.
Today´s a national holiday. Just got up. Can´t really do antything, don´t feel like playing anything else. Don´t really wanna watch tv shows. Just gotta get through 13 more hours if it unlocks midnight in europe. Couple of hours until the review thread, that should distract me somewhat but will also make it way worse for the rest of the time.

When's the embargo up? I wonder if we're in for a similar BOTWening.
By ixel Go To PostWhen's the embargo up? I wonder if we're in for a similar BOTWening.6am pacific, so +9 hours, should be 3pm euro time.
Your hype is making me want to get a Switch and Mario but no. I've not played a Mario game since N64 so I will persevere this time as well.
Picking up my copy today! Omg omg omg omg... going to be the longest day ever! Anyone plan on speeding through it in 24 hours, or taking their sweet time like a glass of fine wine, to draw out the game?
I wonder if the reviewers would be able to see if there is any completion reward. Heard they didn't get much time to play it

Will thoroughly enjoy it. No crit-path.

Major outlets and most EU reviewers had time to go all out if they so desired. I doubt many did as it takes quite a while.
I bought this from the JP eshop; if it's anything like the other stuff I've bought there, it should be playable in less than 4 hours!
it's time so there ya go:
mario odyssey is the best game i've ever played. period.
i couldn't put it down until i collected every single moon.
i wish you all a great time with this game.

By Vic Go To PostWait, when did you get the game?
A while ago.
So I just went to our local store where my friend (former friend?) bought it last night and sent me the picture of him playing it.
Turns out he posted it on facebook as well and that Media Markt got a call from Nintendo that they won't get any games any more if they break release dates! The woman there took all the Odysseys out of their display and packed them away IN FRONT OF ME.
It was cruel
