FYI, if anyone is looking to contribute to SLAENT in any capacity from a development perspective, please feel free to hit me up. I already set up Kibner last weekend.
Basically, we run on Python 3.5 using Django, Postgres and a React front-end via ES2017 transpiled down via Babel.

found an old post I got banned on.....this was bullshit
I guess I'm a GAF refugee. I'm not sure if I'm even going to stay around here but I wanted to post a few thoughts and figured this would be a good enough place to do so. I definitely wasn't a bigwig name or even super-involved (or even cognizant) of the more controversial aspects of NeoGAF but I figured a perspective from someone who's been there more than 15 years may be interesting.
I joined back in 2001 (under the name IAmtheFMan) when it was then clearly affiliated with the gaming-age website. I mainly joined during the Gamecube original "MEGATON/V-Jump" stuff going on, and Wilco's Nintendo rumor (i.e. Nintendo was going to buy Capcom and Sega or something along those lines). After that, I stuck around as it was a forum where I could browse and get most of my gaming news. Eventually, I transitioned to browsing the OT as well, where I could get some general news as well.
The site went through a lot; I remember vaguely about Malka rescuing the site, but I didn't really pay attention as to me, it was just a site to get some gaming news. I also remember when the site completely changed servers broke off from gaming-age and we had to re-register (back in 2003-2004 I think?) Thinking back on it, those may have actually been around the same time. I remember vaguely the controversies of the games companies and developers (like Dyack, Blezinski, Jaffe, etc) though again I didn't pay attention. I DO remember more clearly the topics about some of the earlier posters and the dramas that followed; Serafitia and especially Olimario (which was a complete mess) and so forth. It was during those episodes where I realized my naivety in that this "online" forum could actually bleed into people's real lives and I basically made a conscious effort to keep GAF at an arm's length.
As time went on, I basically posted in a few very specific topics; I went through Med School and Residency and found the physician/resident topic extremely useful and a nice outlet. I liked the cooking threads, and was even a few days ago looking at the instant cooker thread for recipes. I posted in the Asian and Chicago threads and even went to a meetup meeting some nice-minded folks maybe 5 years ago. But even still, I did notice a transition in the forum itself. It always was EXTREMELY cynical, even back in the early 2000's and as time went on, this worsened. Certain threads became less about discussion and more about one-upping another comment. I didn't have a problem with the moderation at first, since it mainly culled the more toxic comments (like personal attacks and what have you) but it did transition to more of a "whim of a moderator" issue eventually. Over the last several years, this bled more into the OT and became much more politicized. The moderators tended to also act like the "smartest guys in the room" also when sometimes it was clear they didn't know quite what they were talking about. While this bothered me, I preferred to be in an environment like GAF as opposed to other fairly toxic GG-type forums. I remember lurking in opa-ages (when that was a thing) and the language and pure assholishness of sites like that turned me off almost immediately. Unfortunately, GAF started heading into a similar direction, albeit with a different political slant.
I remember when I learned about the Amirox arrest. I never really liked his posts but again usually ignored his stuff. Again, I tended to stay out of the "GAF" drama but for some reason, I learned of this one even with clear attempts to bury the lede. When I heard about the arrest, It was the first time where I felt legitimate anger at something on the site. I do think that Malka (despite what some posters who HATE GAF say) probably did NOT know any of this, and felt that his statement on that end was probably legitimate. Obviously, when someone is arrested for child pornography, you want to distance yourself from someone like that but I do think that the way the site handled it was very poor though; they locked all topics, put the statement in a corner and basically said "that's that."
Which brings us to Malka. There really are no excuses for clear sexual assault and it's simply appalling. He really should get the full extent of the consequences, both legal and professionally. But enough has been espoused by other people regarding this.
But look. I'm an eternal optimist. GAF had its issues. It became an extremely polarizing place and the toxicity started to spill over in the last recent years. I also think if I WERE in the gaming industry, GAF would've been the biggest pain in my ass ever. But having said that, I like to think that despite the owner being a POS, there was a lot great to that site. I met some wonderful people through it. I was almost always up to date on not only gaming news, but domestic and international news, and even frivolous topics about recommendations of music, movies, hobbies and other stuff I didn't know I was interested in. I can cite several instances where it has made DRASTIC differences in some people's lives, be it from suicidality, addiction, grieving, or even a poster offering his house to someone else that by circumstances needed a place to stay for a night.
Is GAF truly dead? I don't know but it definitely won't be the same even if it does come back. I think a lot of people (myself included) have jumped ship at this point even if it does make a return. But looking back, the site has been a constant for me over the last 15 years. There have been some months where I posted a ton and other months where I wouldn't post at all but it was a site I could easily check and get a pulse into the gaming world. And while there a lot of people that are reveling in the schadenfreude of the site burning I will miss the best parts of what was clearly a very flawed forum.

Lionel Mandrake destroyed me in one my threads, he was a new member at the time, from then I knew that guy was gonna be a GAF star. Respect.

Here is the cached God's Not Dead 2 review. Enjoy!
This place seems pretty cool, I think try actually adding to discussions rather than lurking and making one off posts
By joefu Go To PostI mean this site was made from scratch by reilo and sharp. It was a small community before a certain event happened. Reilo has been transparent as to what features he is working on. I don't get it.
As for the layout, it is subjective and providing feedback is one way a site can improve. Say why it's horrible.
I'm not discounting the work that has been done, or the effort that it takes.
But, making something "from scratch" isn't always a good thing.
As far as providing feedback:
Make the "Go to first unread" button work properly
Make it easier to navigate from a thread back to the forum that it's in
Show total number of posts in a thread on the board page
Those are just the first few things that come to mind.
From reading over stuff though, it seems that some of these issues have been present for some time.

Is that the second time you've dropped that name? I might be confusing comments.
That was a quick implosion. Feels like it happened in a matter of hours until eventually the 503. Kind of sucks the entire community was painted as a hive minded pile of trash due to the actions of EL. Social media rejoices as if GameFaq and other boards were absolute utopias.

What browser and OS are you using? I'm using Edge and it works fine for me.
By Agnostic Go To PostSo, apparently I was one of the few Gaffers that didn't know a former mod was semi-recently charged with child pornography and GAF was scrubbing threads/posts related to the incident off the forum. WTFI think my other post got eaten if not delete one.
A videogame forum definitely has young kids there and a fucking former mod had access to private DMs, conversations, etc. And Fvilore and the rest of the mods kept this quiet from the community? Fuck all of them.
Jist was, this is the biggest issue. The forums weren't 18+ (not that it would have been better BUT) and that shit shoulda been made public and transparent. Rugsweeping only assists predators. Seen this time and again.

We probably won't ever bother with post counts. Personal or thread.
The navigation is legit, will bring it up.
I think a large part of peoples problem is that they've been very ingrained with the PHPBB layout. It's classic, in mass use. But it is very dated.

Firefox 56.0.1 and Windows 10

Well depending on your leanings places like VOAT and others where minorities don't speak/know their place are utopias in their eyes.
Man, all this nostalgia.
Anyone remember robertsan21? It was from ages ago, but his threads on his fishing trips and that old mod fawning over him were always a sight.

honestly think the people planning to just make a new gaf are kind of naive
ive been on forum implosions before, the communities that formed real bonds stayed together in some irc or discord, but the whole never truly recovers. if we get 20, 50 new active members on slaent id be great.

Regardless of how anyone feels about moderation in terms of who should have been banned or not, the response to amirox having child porn and routinely defending pedophilia on that site was completely unacceptable.
