This has all made me realize I was on gaf for a long ass time. Like I didn’t even really consider how many years I’d been posting there.

Yes, there was actually a lot of good from GAF too. We had plenty of direct contact with PR teams of developers. Like 343 always had someone there, the cuphead devs responded directly there......god, there were so many that posted directly on GAF. You didn't that type of response anywhere else.

hint just because someone makes a bad decision later doesnt invalidate any abuse that person suffered

It'll depend on userbase, I'm sure. And quality of the overall site. If those two items are nailed, I'm sure there would be plenty of devs/publishers willing to advertise on the site or connect with it in more direct ways. It's money they want, afterall.

Word on the neogaf discord is that a proper successor w/ way more transparency and less opinion enforcing is in the works to take what worked and toss what didn't. The whole discipline system is going to get reworked to be open, visible and less absolute. It's got notable community involvement from gaf members and a couple previous mods are also contributing (but they're not in charge and I'm not sure which). Probably as close to official as it's going to get. Obviously zero involvement from Malka, won't even have neo or gaf in the name.
They want to recreate a similar environment for discussion while throwing out evilore's climate of suppression. Plus adding new features with newer forum technology while they're at it. Registration will still be limited for reasons geonaf made obvious this morning, however they're looking into ways to get previous members back in to claim their identities.

Sounds great. Wonder if it'll work out. I made it into the Discord before they closed it, but I don't have access to the chat itself yet. Probably can't use my old email, but it should be pretty easy to prove it's me. No one cares about me enough to impersonate me, lol.

Transparency about bannings and mod accountability. It's like a dream.

It's clear to me based on the information we have thus far that Evilore behaved in a sexually inappropriate way. Beyond that, I'm not judging his personal conduct. However, whatever is going on with Gaf being down is on him and he has not communicated at all about that.

Whatever he does going forward, I don't want all the postive aspects of gaf to be lost to internet history because of the owner's personal conduct.

the weinstein situation is completely different imo because he was abusing his position of power which is unforgivable & i understand why the actresses/models didn't come forward. from what i've read on this situation they seem to be just friends, no business involved, so if he did assault her i dont see why she would maintain her friendship with him or even make it an intimate one. based on what i know so far this is my stance

What a mess, I was on my way back from Mexico celebrating my honeymoon to find out what happened. No love lost for El feel bad for the victim. I've been a lurker and seldom poster since the gaming age forum. Always liked the structure of the forum. Seemed like a one stop shop for everything I was interested in. Neogaf was the last forum I really visited anymore. Sad that the actions of one person disrupted an enjoyment of many others. People will scatter, a replacement will be made but it won't be the same.

I'm fine here if need be... I didn't go to neogaf for evillore I went for the content and the community. This place definitely needs a dedicated video game section though

I think ultimately the issue comes down to "what is harassment vs flirting". Based on his history, I'm willing to believe he's a creep and it wasn't a welcomed advance (obviously). But in his mind, it could all have come down to mixed signals and thinking she was into him (which the subsequent relationship sorta muddles).

I'll just say this on the subject: I think we're at a time when you have the old "patriarchal" (for lack of a better term) dating/flirting methods colliding with the modern awareness of personal safety and independence. What I mean is 50 years ago it would be perfectly normal (not right, but normal) for a boss to flirt with an employee. Now, any unwanted flirting could be construed as harassment, given that context.

Not trying to defend him or what he did, but I think some honest discussion about it could be good. At the end of the day, it shouldn't need to be said, but I assume the vast majority of the people on this site have never been accused, much less convicted, of harassment, so the fact that it's bad shouldn't need to be said over and over.



I guess my ultimate point is: harassment can sometimes be blurry for both the perpetrator (sometimes they honestly don't think they're doing anything wrong) and the victim (why sometimes it takes time for them to realize and accept what happened). If this were the first incident with EL, I'd say we should take a step back and evaluate, but it's not. As for the victim, her subsequent relationship with EL isn't proof that it wasn't harassment.


edit: I really hope people read my entire post and understand my point. If anyone is misunderstood: this is not a defense for sexual abuse(rs).

it's common and does not mean the original event wasn't an attack, unwanted, and not abuse. I've been abused, and I continued to be around my abuser for a long time. The short version of it is basically "survival compartmentalization".
