Last I heard, every single mod except for maybe one had left. I believe it's the main reason the site was taken down, because there's nobody left to moderate it anymore and it was quickly turning into a landslide of shit. I'd guess that evillore is either trying to sell it to new management, or find new mods to replace the previous team.
I've seen a couple mods make statements that they left but nothing juicy.

It feels weird having to track down a bunch of different news sites now. Over time it came to serve as my primary game, movie/general dorky shit, and occasionally breaking ordinary news resource. Now I'm going to need like a dozen RSS feeds to get even half the amount of info a simple GAF refresh a few times a day would have given…

Yeah same. I keep refreshing it. Ugh. Like where else can I get niche game news, read about star wars leaks, and then get a thread about someone who just left the scene of a breaking mass shooting all in one day. It was far reaching but not huge and unmoderated like reddit.

I just want to know the results of the 2017 edition of the GAF Essential RPGs poll. Now I may never know.

we're not going to turn this into a site where you will hear someone's political views on every page in every thread. there's a decency we expect from everyone and of course certain things simply will not be tolerated.

if you've got political thoughts to argue and debate, you can do it all day and all night long in poli or a thread dedicated to it. but we're not going to go the road of "i heard you're indifferent to x policy, kick rocks guy *in a thread about fishing or something*"

we're pretty open and very community minded here, but because of that intimacy we know that people aren't going to agree on everything (nazis leave tho, fuck yal). but plucking at each other over the smallest thing grates on everyone and creates a vibe that we're not about.

It doesn't look like anyone is really taking that place seriously, though. More interestingly, a user there is telling everyone to be patient because a true successor to GAF is in the works that will be contacting gaf members soon to provide invites with restricted registration. I'm over there mainly just to stay in the loop on that. I think in the longrun, forms of restricted registration are necessary to create the kind of discussion gaf had at its best.

I'd be happy sticking with slaent as long as we get some quality of life improvements, though. This is the best alternative so far. From what I've seen, I really like the stances the management here takes. They really try to avoid putting people into tiers, letting everyone edit their own tags, not using mod colors on usernames, and no junior labels.
But I dont like light themes, my eyes are starting to hurt reading all this red on red with the dark theme, and I can't subscribe to any threads which is driving me crazy. Plus I'm worried that with completely open registration, mods won't be able to keep a handle on trolls in the longrun as population grows.

Horizon is great but honestly it's not really first place GOTY material. Whilst it had it's core group of vocal hardcore supporters and I'm sure it would have ranked high, I don't think that group was big enough for it to actually take the crown.

Now Horizon 2, that's where it'll be at.

This is very true. I didn’t mind the mod tags “too” much, as it made it easier to know who to contact for issues. The issue was the community giving far too much deference to the opinions of those who were just mods on a website.

I imagine that’s what the moderators wanted you to think and it worked like a charm. It’s amazing that no one ever found it weird you could post almost any hate word without censorship but attempts to write “slaent” were starred out completely from conversations when the mods obviously possessed the means to censorship ANY hate words they wanted. But no, censoring this site took priority for some reason... being here’s is like taking the pill from the Matrix

Another Gaf refugee. I'll be cruising this site to fill the void from time to time. The discussion here seems pretty cool so far; seems like a decent community.
I will miss the writing community at Gaf for sure, but then again, there are many writing communities I can up and join in minutes and find new people. Time to move on.

and 'forum groupthink' is the exact opposite of our long-term goals, which is communities that can create content and have it promoted, have their own themes and atmosphere semi-independent of the overall site, and more communication with admins/mods in general

I found GAF during the PS2 era, so, what, maybe 11 or 12 years ago? The gaming side introduced me to an obscure Japanese game called Demon’s Souls and provided a fantastic place to discuss the shitshow that is E3. I frequented the OT side more in recent years and found many kindred souls on the political spectrum (yes, it did become a hive mind), some good book recommendations in the monthly “What are you reading?” threads, solid investment advice from the guy with a black & white Stephen Colbert (?) avatar, and lots of wasted time. Fuck Evilore and the mods who covered up for him.

The worst part of GAF's fall is the "bad guys" winning. PewDiePie, certified racist, is having a laugh in Twitter.

Fuck.

Also worth noting that Besada wasn't the only one engaging in that sort of behavior: quite a few moderators engaged in explicit favoritism, which again I strenuously objected to. In most cases, however, it was less politically motivated and more just "protecting your boys," or some such thing. For example, some moderators who frequented sports community threads would go out of their way to protect posters who were frequent posters in their preferred sports threads. One moderator considered overturning a ban I implemented on a poster who had expressly threatened my life because that poster was his sports-bro.
