Its been down almost a day now, would have thought the likes of Kotaku, Polygon, Eurogamer or IGN would be quicker off the mark even with the ambition of driving more users their way. You dont even need to report on unsubstantiated rumours, just that there had been and now the site is down…

So far the only reasoning i can think of is that its the weekend, or they're waiting for a response or something. As of right now the future of NeoGAF is still unknown.

Same here. Neogaf and Facebook made up 99 percent of my internet usage. I loved the strict moderation as well.

Salty banned people
Salty industry people
People who liked the community but hated some of the leadership

What I haven't seen has been the loyalists. I really wonder how many of them exist and how they are going to justify continuing to go to the site after it comes back up.

I'm almost in that camp. I loved the site. I didn't mind the draconian modding. But the worst I knew about was the ass grab thing. I'm not supporting the site after recent claims unless Malka is gone.

Allow me to chime in about politics as well.

A couple of years ago (when i was about 18 YO), i was as right a Republician as i could get, of course, i did not know much. I am 22, going on 23 now, and after the events of 2015/2016, i slowly made my way center-right. I still have some pretty conservative views, of course (Pro life (outside critical circumstances of course), pro gun (again, outside some damming issues, like mental fitness, criminal records, common sense stuff, etc), and pro capitalism. (not a bernie guy, but i have no ill will for him or his supporters)), but i am more of a common sense individual, in that i am not very partisan/blindly loyal to Trump. Hell, i did not even vote for the guy. He turned me off big time.

I have no issues with Dems unless people get nasty over things. Of course, that goes for anyone, really.

So, all in all, that is about it. Figured if i am going to be a part of this community, i might as well be transparent. Hope i did not put some people off. That was not my goal.

That's a lot of drama for one day, especially since I've been lurking and posting in the ol' forums since the Saturn/Dreamcast days.

In hindsight it's not a surprise to find that in a forum history of megaton (lol) level meltdowns that it's ended with one big one from the very top.

Shoutouts to the crew from Media Create, NPD, Sega/Shenmue/Yakuza, Anime/Manga/lolSHAFT, LL/iM@S, Gacha/Mobile, Kickstarter/Indiegogo/Fig/indie crowdfunding and anyone who can still remember Sakura Taisen. So that I can go OUUJJJIIII one more time (or alternatively, Nozomu's zetsuboshita!)

Yeah, they're legit news sites and need to do their due diligence before writing a story. It'll be interesting to see what the're investigations bring up though.

MobileGAF was made by a member. Really crazy to think that his full time job was GAF and yet the site barely changed over the last 10 years.

The other part of GAF that I'll miss (if it really does stay gone from here on out) is the history. Just the other night I wanted to feel what the vibe was on Brutal Legend back when it launched, so I put the title into Search. Instantly I had dozens of threads in front of me, from people discussing reviews to demo impressions to just getting excited over a few new screenshots. The entire site is like a time capsule of gamer opinions, with a huge variety of voices speaking on a comprehensive slate of topics. You can't just conjure something like that up.

Some years ago the biggest Doctor Who forum on the net, Outpost Gallifrey closed down, and the owner made the decision to take the entire forum database down with it. To all intents and purposes, that forum WAS Doctor Who fandom on the internet during one of the most key times in the show's existence, and that owner wiped it all for no good reason. Years from now, fans will wonder how people reacted when the show came back after 15 years off the air, and there'll be nothing to show them.

I'll never forgive that forum admin for that, and I truly hope the same thing doesn't happen to GAF.

Tyler's job was sitting back and collecting his checks from ad networks. I mean, I wonder if he even paid Gromph, since to my knowledge he was the one who did the heavy lifting when it came to the site's maintenance.

Another one from RefugeeGAF was mostly a lurker having 500 posts from my 3 years no one probably knows me thanks to that. Hoping this place becomes a home to the community and gives us some classic threads like the Walmart kayak discussion and the glorious Sony E3 of 2015

The mobile site is amazing btw feels so nice to have a cleaner feel and no browser hijacking trash ads

Ex Gaf member by the looks of it. As long as this place doesn't start sucking Sonys balls, become full of blatant Apple fanboys and every other fucking thread is a trump one, I'll remain here.

GAF expat here. Sad to see Neogaf go, I was a member since the gaming-age days so GAF has been a part of my daily life for quite a while. That said fuck Evilore for acting like a ppiece of shit human being. He deserves what's coming to him.

Love the design of Slaent, very classy!

Malka also lost quite a few followers on Twitter already, people a pissed it seems, even if GAF comes back, it propably wil only be a shadow of it's former self.

The funny thing is VGChartz actually has decent numbers. It was only banned from GAF because GAF wanted to brag they had NPD leakers on their site, but Chartz started getting more NPD leaks after Lore started revealing NPD identities.

That's why I hope GAF is not lost. Perhaps a change in ownership/policy, but all the contents there have value. There are many worthwhile LTTP topics. Many topics about trends and issues within the gaming industry that are a pleasure to read. NPD recently opened up about sales data on GAF, too.

Yes, this place has been much smaller than GAF. Megathreads fit that community's size. If you want to see a new thread, create one. No one is gonna ban you for making too many threads (as long as they aren't just shit posts).

Pretty much only lurked GAF after FootyGAF was purged a while back so it isn't that big of a loss for me apart from the news aggregation side of it (no idea how I'm going to go about getting news now though).

Hopefully he gets what he deserves if the accusations are true.

The memes were stupid in GAF but they are stupid anywhere.

Actually, I'd like to discuss *that other* GAF drama as well. Did amir0x have co-conspirators in the NeoGAF staff?

I distinctly remember even the discussion of possibility of that being viciously suppressed after the arrest, but he'd been a mod for years, and a forum fixture for much longer.

Man, I just remembered I was a witness to another forum/community crisis and subsequent split a long time ago, LOL.

I was a part of the old Dream Theater Messageboard, back in the early-mid 00s. Can't remember exactly what happened but there were some issues with the Admin (a guy with the nickname "Itchy") and a lot of people left. But then, the community split between those who still really wanted to keep the DT Messageboard style in term of moderation and content (and DT fanboyism) and those who wanted a looser, more "anything-goes" style. Thus, DreamTheaterForums and Five-Eight were started, each by diffrent people and with different "styles" - and even though there was a certain overlap in users, they were really different day-to-day. I remained with Five-Eight but then it really started to become like 4chan-lite, with people engaging in some very "edgy" behavior and the mods not giving a shit because "free speech" or whatever.

This happened like... 11 years ago or something. Damn.

By Saint Punchy McDomes Go To PostThe funny thing is VGChartz actually has decent numbers. It was only banned from GAF because GAF wanted to brag they had NPD leakers on their site, but Chartz started getting more NPD leaks after Lore started revealing NPD identities.

My issue with VGchartz was that the numbers didn't seem well sourced, and were usually a few months behind. Weekly media create threads really made me look forward to Wednesdays, and the charts and discussion (and Capcom bashing lol) were great. I know that these threads are also on v and Reddit, but they never gain much traction on the latter and good luck having actual discussion on the former. Plus, I'm pretty sure they both just copied the info from Gaf anyway.

Also ex-gaffer who lives in Asia. I didn't post on gaf much lately and just used it mainly for news on gaming. I'm going to miss the place and hopefully a nice site can fill the void.

As you can see from upthread, many users were totally unaware of 2k12 culo'd'yspaña-gate and even ami-gate because of post-scrubbing.

Gosh, there's so much that I didn't pay attention to / wasn't aware of. Of course I understand the difference between unsubstantiated rumours and something with more weight but still.

There was a mod I remember called Steve Youngblood I think. Always struck me as pretty smart and decent.

tbqh I'm more interested these days in the emerging mobile market that was reported to be 75-85% Japan game revenue, emerging markets like China and East Asia (which is why I follow ZhugeEX a lot) and the emerging large multiplayer efforts (Battle royale genre, Tencent's mobile MOBA Honour of Kings, Lineage 2 Revolution mobile MMO tearing up the Japan mobile charts, the idol battle genre -uh I meant dating sim [dentsu] genre etc). Other than Switch, I'm not as interested in MC/NPD.
