I'm wondering how many lurkers were impacted by this? I'm one of those. Had a GAF account since 2008 (Fine was my username), only posted 186 times total, but used to browse (especially OT), daily. So not part of the "community" per se, but going on the site was definitely a daily habit, especially on the commute. Feels weird.
Don't give a crap about most sports (except the Olympics and hockey, always hockey), so SLAENT in the past held no appeal. But it seems to hold promise!
What was nice about GAF was how fast it moved, since the community was so large. Made for great browsing.

By rjinaz10 Go To PostSad to see they are making the same mistakes gaf made. Make a thread, contain it to that. Pretending it doesn't exist and silencing people is in part why GAF had the reputation it did. I also don't agree with carrying over bans. Though, I can understand it for the time being but that should be lifted eventually. It's either a RESET or it's not. So far it's clearly not. It's a reload last save.
If that's how it's going to be, I think I'll stay here. You guys seem a lot more laid back than that while also keeping the assholes out.

So I keep reading the STATE OF NEOGAF thread.
There is this guy, complaining that before the exodus of posters and mods, he never felt he could safely share his opinion, because he'd get attacked for it.
At this point I already have suspicions.
Another poster asks him, what the topics were he did not feel comfortable talking about at the "old" NeoGaf.
Of course it's the all-time hitlist of the Arch-conservatives/Alt-righter/Gamer Gaters.

Ha, Timan actually posted as a mod in the state of neogaf thread about how links are banned in PMs:
I don't know about links being banned in PM's. Possible theres a word in the link thats blacklisted, not sure.
Anyway, there are sites out there that are reporting staff are reading their PM's and banning them for things they sent/received etc. vBulletin does NOT let any user read another users PM. You'd have to either login as that user, or have direct access to the database.

If they wanted to leave all baggage behind, maybe they should have picked a name that isn't based on this entire mess, lol.
By Novis Go To PostThey're gonna have to rethink that quick. They need a thread where people are free and clear to speak their piece—everything outside of that can be a bannable offense. GAF was a big part of many people's lives; they can't just pretend like the fallout is a non-issue.

In a weird sort of way, being part of this disaster definitely makes me feel like I'm part of a community.
By giririsss Go To PostShit, you're going to waste WAY too much of my free time.Sorry for the late reply.
I'd read all of that.
Do you use a particular site to publish them "magazine" style?
I'm sick at home right now so I went and took an afternoon nap. :)
Glad to hear it as it's been a passion project for me for over a decade now.
I do indeed release them as complete magazines over at my site. You can find the news updates here: http://www.outofprintarchive.com/news.html
And the magazine catalogue section is here: http://www.outofprintarchive.com/magazine_catalogue_UK.html
Every magazine has several download options, from the highest quality "Max-rez" settings to tablet and phone options to keep the sizes down for those formats.
For reading on a laptop or computer, or even a high resolution tablet screen I fully recommend the "Max-Rez" option though, to get the most out of them.
Once you unpack the zip file, you'll have a cbz file which can be read with any comic book reader or PDF program.
Or you can even rename it back to .zip and unpack it once more to get to the actual jpgs inside.
Oh and I don't just scan them and quickly throw them online.
Oh no! ;) I spend between 40-60 hours on average on a single, 100 page magazine, from scanning to restoring them.
I actually created a little feature several years back to give people a small peek behind the curtains to see what this "restoration process" actually entails. You can find that here: http://www.outofprintarchive.com/articles/features/out-of-print/the_restoration_process.html
I recently acquired the last remaining Club Nintendo issues from 1989-1990 from the UK that I was missing to have the complete set.
Already stared working one of of the issues that was in really bad shape, to see if I would be able to resurrect them.
The first result was encouraging. :)
A couple more results from work I've done in the past:
So as you can see, it takes quite a bit of time to get them back to their former glory at times. But as I said, it's a passion project for me.
You may encounter download links that don't work. But don't worry, just let me know if a certain file is down and I'll re-up it asap.
I'm in the middle of remastering all my old issues to get them in line with the more recent colour settings and editing techniques so that they all look as close to their original, physical counterparts as possible.
These are all from 2016 and 2017 and can be identified by the scan date on their catalogue page and on bottom of the final page in each magazine as well, where there should be a date also.
If there's not one, the magazine will be remastered in the future with better settings and more advanced editing techniques.
But enough of that, as this thread probably isn't the best place to go into detail on all of that. ;)
By Doomrider Go To PostSo, just came across that pic of Resetera's staff list and bronsonlee is a mod? Wait what. And morrigan? As in morrigan stark?Could be worse, though. Both could have ended up being admins.

Containment is such a good strategy. I remember when 9/11 Truther shit went crazy and a thread was created to contain it. Worked like a charm. Of course I read it, because the crazy-factor fascinated me.
Same thing with the NEoGAF thread we're in now. Want that? Read it. Don't want it? Don't read it.
Suppressing outright is just going to irk people, especially if it's absolute.

GAF was a big part of many people's lives; they can't just pretend like the fallout is a non-issue.It should probably just be like this thread and have the same rules the mods here established as the thread went on. People will need a space to vent a little.
It would be similar to how all 9/11 conspiracy theories were relegated to a single thread on GAF. If you put it in one thread people have a place to say their piece and move on instead they will try to get snide and/or subtle remarks in every thread. Man I should be a mod, I'm smart as hell.

True.
I mean, I don't have access to their discord, but back on gaf, I've seen bronsonlee making productive posts like... Twice. How do you make someone like that a mod? Unless he drops his shitposting persona, dunno.
Don't think someone like morrigan is fit to mod, but here we are. Her posting style could get grating sometimes.
Regardless, I'm actually staying positive about Resetera, I think it'll turn out fine even if it needs some time.

If NeoGAF is the kind of forum that will keep people that say disgusting shit like "ex-gays" then I'm glad ResetEra is a thing.

By ZattMurdock Go To Post"Contained"? What do you mean? It's happening on literally every thread there, not mentioning the suicide threads. It seems reasonable that mods here or ANYWHERE would like to keep the topic contained to a single thread. They don't need to come in advance and explain that's what they will do, it seems like common sense that's what how they'll approach it.Well there is one thread specifically for that topic, if other threads are created they are erased. That was the point, I didn't mean contained as in everybody is respecting that. We agree about the one thread thing. Sorry my point wasn't clear. Also, you may think it seems like commonsense but I'm not so sure it is to some. And there is a lot of conflicting information including somebody just saying the talk is banned.

So OT, and I doubt that I'm gonna get any support here, but I'm playing through DmC right now. Gaf convinced me it was garbage. It is not. Although, again, I doubt I'll get that support here.
I don't the problem GAF will have is the amount of people who left but WHO left. A lot of them were some of the most frequent posters, prolific content creators, and industry people. I mean by themselves they could leave and people would rise up but all at once? Nah. Doesn't feel right.

DmC was OK. NuDante was a bit silly and tryhard edgy, but it was a pretty decent game nonetheless.
I am trying to figure out what email I had setup with my GAF account. If I changed email at any point would I have gotten some sort of auto-notification sent to my email?

There's no part of the original content creation of GAF that's remaining intact.
GAF feels like a graveyard right now. And the posts are just bad empty posts. It does make me sad when the threads use to populate so quick with posts.

A lot of them were some of the most frequent posters, prolific content creators, and industry people. I mean by themselves they could leave and people would rise up but all at once? Nah. Doesn't feel right. It's not going to happen, neogaf will never be the same, the peeps in the industry will avoid it like the plague. I mean I have no doubt neogaf isn't going anywhere, there are enough people to keep conversations going for some time. But it's never going to be special like it once was. People can get the same experience from other forums so eventually traffic will die down especially once people get tired of trying to prove the people that left wrong by keeping the place busy for the time being. Not too mention the people that felt they were being silenced now coming out of the woodwork. That too will get old eventually once they relaize nobody is left to argue with or laugh at behind their backs at places like voat.
