the mob mentality of gaf was so fucking toxic sometimes, it's easy to see why so many in the gaming industry are happy

I tried to avoid anything controversial over there. In fact I migrated to NeoGAF having been a member over at GameFAQs for almost 13 years. I got tired of the constant console warring and school yard argument nonsense, I'd hope NeoGAF would above that. Well it happens my brief period of roughly 4 1/2 years until the current chaos has been somewhat enjoyable, since I mainly stuck to the gaming forums and only talked about gaming stuff.

There was some issues with the forum. Notably the whining in Nintendo threads from a select group of inviduals. The platform bias was somewhat transparent unfortunately, and I tried my best to avoid this mainly but sometimes it was so in your face it was just baffling.

To be perfectly honest I think the whole forum started to go to shit when BishopTL stepped down. Prior to that there was a lot of console warrior-y nonsense that would have been a lot less tolerated with since that point. How unfortunate.

Which brings up an interesting question, I know a lot of folks from GAF migrated here. I met a lot of cool and like minded people there, and I hope to maintain that with some folks.

Are we going to structure this forum similarly with OTs and what not for major game releases.

I don't know who was involved / who cannot be trusted in regards to the situation at GAF. I know I was cool with a few mods. Aeana and Nirolak because of RPG discussions and stuff. Basically I'm kinda lost because I had no idea there was a problem with the site administration until today.

Gaming side was something else. And then there were the hentai games. But I guess OT competed in their own way with the anime threads.

Has he responded yet?

Uh. Hi? I've had a GAF browser tab open continuously for ages and have no idea what to do with myself. Do you ban literal Nazis here as well? This is a depressingly important detail to have to ask about in seeking a new forum, admittedly, but it is important! That's one positive trait GAF did keep to the end.

Had I known this was coming I'd have tried to archive as much of the site as possible! Hundreds of hours of entertainment in legendary threads that shall never again have laid eyes upon by man, sadly. Damn, and this means I need new memes too, huh? I'm already years behind on that stuff so a change of location doesn't help.

Hiya Slaent, came over here from Gaf at the great Footygaf exodus during the cunt wars. But since I don't post all that much slaent fell to the wayside. Now I saw gaf is down and fortunately my browser remembered my slaent password (even if I don't).
I slept through the gaf implosion and am only reading up on it now: Wow!

Many of the communities are doing their own thing. If there's something specific you care about, you should reference it in your request.

Well, the anti reach out to the centrists and moderates dogpile was kinda too much.

GAF migrator here, it had its problems but generally GAF was a great place to get news fast and most of the folks on there were decent people. It was moderated probably overly harshly which was a blessing and a curse at times. Hope to make Slaent my new home, already see some familiar names so initial impressions are good.

I'm guessing a lot of folks won't be reusing their GAF usernames here. I recognize a few folks (Hello, IrishNinja, good to see you here), though the worst part is there was so many good current threads I was participating in I hoped to keep in contact with the people there and I don't know their usernames off the top of my head and I only recognize them by their avatars.

Hopefully Durante shows up eventually.

Sure, but it often wasn’t. It often just became an exercise of wrong think of any sort getting more scrutiny than the group think. And by scrutiny I mean heavy handed moderation standards that led to wrong thinkers getting banned while the hive mind went without punishment for their escalating behavior. Which just led to a vicious cycle degrading the quality of the forum over time. I say this as someone that agrees with that hive 95% of the time.

I got banned for saying it was fucked up to wish harm on the friends and family of Trump supporters. One of those post election threads where anything goes if it was negative against the opposing tribe, me merely pointing out that I understand the frustration, but the advocation makes you as bad or worse than the group you are decrying was a bannable defense.

One of the most annoying aspects of GAF was if you like Anime games or sported an Anime avatar you were labeled because of it. Bad enough the people that hated these sorts of games could not restrain themselves to continuously visit those threads to say their regurgitated piece that was heard umpteenth times over the course of the many threads.

That reminds me should spam every thread trying to spread the word. I've only ventured into communities I was part of at one point or another. And remember slaent is censored on there so have to use tinyurl or s l a e n t.

So here is where we get to complain about Xenoblade 2's characters designs now huh. I did like the mod team tho. Hopefully that can continue.

But then when

I think it says something that I keep hearing people saying today on discord and here about what was wrong with GAF.

Anyone get word on if the Crypto community on GAF made a discord? How about PoliGAF? Its the communities I'll miss if we can't link up; the forum itself is just software.

Moderation will and could be missed I suppose. Very few forums online bother to try and keep it civil at all.
