By GillianSeed79 Go To PostYeesh, Jeff Gerstmann's comments during the most recent Bombcast on the relevancy of internet forums and online message boards in 2017 are really kind of disheartening, humbling, and depressing to some extent. They were basically saying GAF used to be informative for the industry but it was supplanted, like most message boards, by social media sites (i.e. Twitter/Facebook/Discord) years ago and that message boards in general are rapidly dying as members get older, get married and have children. He also insinuated that most users left are older ones, as social media has taken over. In fact, both the Giant Bombcast and Waypoint kind of spoke GAF with a little disdain despite it being a refuge from the general toxicity of the gaming community. It's fitting considering, much like Tyler's ego, GAF kind of fancied itself as this elite group of gamers/intellectuals that industry insiders looked to for guidance, when it fact it seems like a lot of journalists/industry members looked at us with eyes kind of rolling or outright discomfort. It kind of sucks because it hits home to me the fact I am getting older, I don't have many real life friends, I don't even have a Twitter account (although I've been considering making one), I just got engaged and I'm trying to have a kid. I also have no idea what the hell Discord is. It's hard when you get older and the only people you have left to talk to about your interests are your immediate family and those you meet on message boards. Oh well, you guys are cool.At least they talked about it. I haven't gotten to that part of the 'cast yet, but I was expecting them to sideways discuss it without digging into the meat of it, as they generally remain apolitical. Waypoint is at least guaranteed good for that catharsis.
Only ever needed a community to hang out in. Not be an industry insider or whatever. That was always illusory
By Papercuts Go To PostEverything on reset got pushed because a spy got through the vetting, lmao.
Oh boy this whole thing.
I feel like they're trying to do everything too perfectly. At some point they just need to dive in with both feet and see how it goes, whenever the site goes up it's going to be leaked anyway.

But you know what, my GAF is dead, I think at this point I don't care to defend its reputation. So whatever anybody says about GAF is right.
By DY_nasty Go To PostI don't think they're exclusive either.Reddit gets a bit of getting used to and it's pretty good for finding communities centered around very specific topics but like with social media, it's shit for actually having that community feel. I pretty much knew must Gaf members in the OT, I could tell you what dumb ass opinions they had about a movie or whatever but with Reddit, I'm pretty much just communicating with people like it's matchmaking or something, I reply to them once and never see them again. For being the frontpage of the internet, it sure does feel lonely.
Thing is, damn near every message board out there is archaic. Why use stuff that's a decade old and incompatible with baseline of social media? If anything, once message boards catch up they'll be intertwined.
edit: reddit is eye vomit

Yeah I just want a place to shoot the shit about things I like where conversations can happen relatively rapidly. If said place isnβt full of insiders I donβt really care as long as everyone is chill. The older I get and the farther my friends move away I have noticed that Iβve become more active on GAF (and elsewhere now I guess) as a way to maintain some sort of social sphere.
Social media really is lonely most of the times, even the ones you have your friends in and whatnot, most of the times you are talking with strawmen that are also humans. The level of public discourse that social media has is part of its inherently "mass media" design. It is mass media, but anyone can contribute. It's just as alienating and depersonalizating (probably wrote that wrong) as mass media, but you can scream back at the idiot box.
Tbh, blogging in the early 2000s felt that way too, so maybe there's a cycle. Maybe people will get tired of being part of those mass commentary boxes and will naturally seek stuff like forums for that more humane feel.
Or they will go outside and meet people, but that's just ridiculous.

Yeah, unless you're some big name poster (which would require way, way more work than it would ever be worth putting into) it's pretty much exactly like you describe. It say something when smaller subs are actively scared of growing and trying to keep subscriptions low.

I have a feeling that some older folk might just quit posting anywhere altogether. Kinda like when all your friends get married and have kids but replace them with the various forum off shoots. heh I might just become a lurker.
I just find it so crazy that people won't listen to others' experiences and testimony about how events like that make them feel. You can set a watch to that little brown noser.
You know what infuriates me the MOST about it all, and always has?
The concept of virtue signalling. This idea that they ALWAYS put out, like, IMMEDIATELY, that you don't actually care about what you're arguing about. Because if you actually cared, that would mean it's an actual problem. And I don't care. And that would make me an asshole. And I'm not an asshole, so you can't POSSIBLY actually care about this thing that you're passionate about and you say is really important to many lives but I think is dumb and pointless and crazy. So they just ASSUME that you MUST be arguing in bad faith, and are saying the things you are saying to get "brownie points" or even worse, they assume you're just a "white male" speaking for minorities and try to turn it on how YOU are actually the one who is racist. Because they intrinsically realize that arguing with a minority about how they should respond to the treatment of minorities is gonna make them the bad guy, so they have to twist reality into being on their side.

I've clicked my Subscriptions tab a billion times today. It's muscle reflex to move my hand to that click and hit the left click on my mouse.
By adamsappel Go To PostI wore my NeoGAF t-shirt today. It came up in the basket rotation, which seemed like kismet. Even though it was a little warm I threw a sweatshirt on when I had to go out. Just like GamerGate made me hesitant to proclaim myself a "gamer" in unknown company, I now realize I can't even reveal that I was there during the "good years" (those 14K posts between August of 2005 and Sunday, and a couple of years of lurking before that). Beyond the fact it now seems to be skewing alt-right/GG/anti-p.c./but mah games, it's run by a petulant little shit who won't confront his own failings. Visiting the site today was sad and shocking. I recognize almost nobody, save for those leaving ashes behind them. GAF has become something to be ashamed of.
Are you adam from poligaf? I remember you from gaf, but I can't remember which adam you are, lol

Pretty fascinating how stupid people co-opt academic terms they don't understand, strip them of all nuance and context, and gleefully parrot them in scenarios that don't apply until they just become slurs equivalent to "bad person doing bad things making me uncomfortable"

To say you care genuinely about something altruistic and decent at heart scares them. Because in their cynical world, caring is the most powerful weapon they know they can't fucking win against. Even if GAF dies, them celebrating it's demise speaks volumes of the type of human beings they are. To act as if EL was a representative of the decent people who made that community, speaks so much.

I of course can't talk for everybody, but that wasn't the reason I was on GAF and I'm maybe projecting, but I think most of GAF wasn't either.
GAF was an excellent source for gaming news for me. One click on my smartphone and I was able to see all the "important" news on the front page. No matter where I was, or what I was doing atm. The informations were easy to access and loading was fast. Even better, because of the sheer mass of people active on GAF, most information was available fast. The relevant stuff stayed on the front page, while all the rest wandered slowly into the background. It worked perfectly, I no longer had to browse through several sites like kotaku, IGN, etc.
Load up GAF, look through the threads, pick one. done. Easy and convenient.
The second reason were PC performance threads. Wanted to know if a new game runs fine? Just look into it. There is your answer. People (with similar hardware) often sometimes posted "optimal" settings that helped running a game at your desired resolution/fps. This was sometimes more reliable then benchmarks.
The third reason were gaming OTs: People there were very helpful. Stuck on a certain part? Just ask, wait a minute and there was your helpful answer. No jokes or stupid comments about your "noobish" question. In some cases people even randomly grouped up to help other gafers in MP/co-op games. That was amazing and a huge difference to other social media sites/forums.
Other people had of course different reasons to be on GAF, community threads, movie talk, tech talk, forum games etc. You name it, you get it (for the most part). I was also under the impression that GAF was relatively drama free. For example I only learned about the current EL drama because NeoGaf was offline for such a long time, so I started digging around myself (aka use google). I stumbled that way about the amirox stuff and about him defending pedophiles. My mind was blown that second and even more after learning that people were banned just because they wanted to talk about this (and sorry for my language) massive pile of shit. I later found some ridiculous EL posts (like the Sextology stuff), some archived, "you were banned because I say so and don't like you" messages etc. That started to paint a totally different picture about NeoGad tbh. That alone was enough to made me regret ever visiting that site. EL response to the current drama was just the icing on the cake. I'm starting to get a good picture about who this guys really is.
