They were basically saying GAF used to be informative for the industry but it was supplanted, like most message boards, by social media sites (i.e. Twitter/Facebook/Discord) years ago and that message boards in general are rapidly dying as members get older, get married and have children. He also insinuated that most users left are older ones, as social media has taken over. In fact, both the Giant Bombcast and Waypoint kind of spoke GAF with a little disdain despite it being a refuge from the general toxicity of the gaming community. It's fitting considering, much like Tyler's ego, GAF kind of fancied itself as this elite group of gamers/intellectuals that industry insiders looked to for guidance, when it fact it seems like a lot of journalists/industry members looked at us with eyes kind of rolling or outright discomfort. It kind of sucks because it hits home to me the fact I am getting older, I don't have many real life friends, I don't even have a Twitter account (although I've been considering making one), I just got engaged and I'm trying to have a kid. I also have no idea what the hell Discord is. It's hard when you get older and the only people you have left to talk to about your interests are your immediate family and those you meet on message boards. Oh well, you guys are cool.

I can agree with that. I think people overestimate what GAF is to the industry based on what it once genuinely was. Having said that, I think the fact that most of the members are older, it means that people really aren't interested in their new community to be "the industry's dirty little secret" or something like that, but a genuine community that is welcoming and diverse.

Very interesting topic, have thought about that myself a couple of times, and they are not entirely wrong, I do believe that members of message boards tend to be older. It's hard to imagine 14-18 year-olds using message boards today, but that doesn't make them irrelevant. I don't understand how social media or discord could replace them, since you can't really have discussions about a large variety of topics on these platforms without things getting really messy.

And maybe forums are a dying breed that only old fucks like us will enjoy but they're still better for fostering communities than social media.

I wore my NeoGAF t-shirt today. It came up in the basket rotation, which seemed like kismet. Even though it was a little warm I threw a sweatshirt on when I had to go out. Just like GamerGate made me hesitant to proclaim myself a "gamer" in unknown company, I now realize I can't even reveal that I was there during the "good years" (those 14K posts between August of 2005 and Sunday, and a couple of years of lurking before that). Beyond the fact it now seems to be skewing alt-right/GG/anti-p.c./but mah games, it's run by a petulant little shit who won't confront his own failings. Visiting the site today was sad and shocking. I recognize almost nobody, save for those leaving ashes behind them. GAF has become something to be ashamed of.
I can't imagine something like a community on Reddit. You wanna talk XCOM 2, here are these people. Oh, Dark Souls 3 came out, here are these totally different people. It's like a Zygman Bauman nightmare.

Thing is, damn near every message board out there is archaic. Why use stuff that's a decade old and incompatible with baseline of social media? If anything, once message boards catch up they'll be intertwined.

Honestly, I thought forums and message boards were on the way out years ago. There was a period after social media took off and before I found GAF where I thought the entire concept of forums was done. It took finding GAF to restore that faith in the idea of larger forums and communities. That was 6-7 years ago.
The disdain they had for GAF is probably a reflection of GAF itself more than anything, particularly when they talk about relevancy. A lot of people on GAF spent years trying to establish and thinking it was this hot industry hot spot and hang out. I think a lot of the reaction to it burning down will have opened a lot of eyes. Gaming communities are still really important to people and Giant Bomb and Waypoint both understand - and rely - on that.
I like reddit when I want to be really specific. Like, I want to be up to date with XCOM 2 mods. But to talk to people like they are humans with feelings and lives? It's kind of impossible.
