The moderation on gaf may have been heavy handed, but one only need to look at it's current state and especially the mental health thread to see a glimpse of what they were holding back.
Also if people just wanted to "talk about games", those forums are dime a dozen on the internet. I appreciated that gaf promoted an environment where underrepressented groups in gaming felt free to express their opinions and viewpoints on a variety of subjects. These were things said that really opened my eyes on subjects over the years that I had never fully given much thought over due to my limited perspective on things and I'd like to think that it has made me a better person. I have moved and been part of a variety of gaming forums in my time, and sites like gaf where that kind of communication was fostered are certainly not dime a dozen and I'll certainly miss it.
I'm eager to give this place or resetera a chance (or both!), especially since i see a lot of familliar faces here. :)

Exactly, as a straight white male it really introduced me to concepts I hadnt even thought about before like the under representation of minorities in games and media as a whole. Or even outright bad portrayals.

The entire industry seems like it's in the middle of an existential crisis. Nothing has been fixed since GG happened. The same questionable streamers are just a popular with crowds of children viewers who are going to grow up without advancing past the prank-calling edge-lord phase of development. They will fail miserably at developing the necessary social skills required to function in even the most basic of humanly decent societies, and will lash out against any and all that question their tightly held belief structures that they require in order to justify their own shitty personalities. They will retreat back into their own safe spaces where they can "talk about video games in peace" and when questioned or ousted from those safe spaces or forced to "get along" with others, will fight back with increasingly extremist views on equality and diversity. GG and the increase in young, white supremacist men is intrinsically tied, because it is the exact same thought-process that leads to these shitty, selfish human beings.
