What's so wrong with standing up for justice and equality again? Why would you be happy to be able to foster hatred? What kind of people would think that way?
Some people want to ignore injustices or propagate them. When we try and highlight these issues it runs counter to their plans and thus they want to revile us. It is unfortunate but eventually they will lose out most assuredly.
This past year (election, the entire Trump administration, Weinstein, this) has really opened my eyes to how quickly people will go into denial to pretend that everything is alright before they’ll ever admit there is a problem. I guess myself included at times too.

Not to say that ship hasn't sailed already.I think what we're seeing now is mostly people that avoided voicing their awful views so they could participate in the gaming discussion (or at least cleaned themselves up somewhat) who have been emboldened by what they perceive is license to go full Gator.

By way of background, I have lurked on GAF for over ten years, and posted for around four years. These days, I mainly lived in OT, but I kept up with Gaming. I contributed, either by putting in personal time and energy to produce tracks for the community for the Wipeout soundtrack project, or by joining in and trying to engage in constructive healthy debate. I love this community. It is one of the different spaces left on the web. I have checked in daily, even if just for a moment, nearly every day over that period.
I have a senior position in a multi-national firm, my job involves setting up investment structures and working with investors and stakeholders. I know a lot of people in commerce, law, finance, software and private equity. I am acutely aware of, and involved in, the financial markets and have advised on building businesses, or managing their dissolution over a 17 year career.
I have spent a lot of free time watching events today, because I am personally and emotionally invested in the site, and I also view it as a bellweather for the gaming markets. I am leaving aside any questions as to the conduct of the owner, which is a subject of uncontested hearsay and fact, and to which I refuse to be drawn in on, and focusing solely on the economic ramifications of recent events. I have my personal views, which are on the liberal and progressive end of the spectrum, but they remain that - personal and opinion.
This site has maintained its reputation through the strength, integrity and passion of its community. The community are the content generators and the market makers for the gaming industry through the size of the community, it’s reputation, it’s influence and the quality of its debate. Even if Developers, publishers and the media didn’t like GAF, they had to be here, and take note of it, due to its size, integrity and influence.
This site depends upon its reputation, it’s influence and it’s content for survival. Without any of these, it has little intrinsic value. It becomes unattractive for advertisers, investors, Developers, publishers, the media, and the ecosystem that surrounds them. If it lacks the aforementioned qualities, everyone deserts, and it dies slowly.
I could point the community to any number of historical or current case studies. But once you have a faulty product, an inadequate platform, a thing that people don’t want, then it is game over. It may be a slow death, but it is game over once the public scents death. Particularly if you aren’t selling anything other than content, and particularly where your content providers, your emissaries and your public are disillusioned and dissatisfied.
Today, I have witnessed the mass departure or silence of key members, who have invested a lot of their time and energy in producing high quality content about new games, new game developments, and game related content. I have witnessed the closure of the off topic threads that support these members and forums, and the victimisation and demonisation of many people who call this home.
All I see are unfamiliar names, and a large amount of radical right wing voices that are full of anger, hatred or vulgarities. Traits that I don’t like in a person, and certain traits that advertisers and Developers don’t want to be associated with. In this world, where we are the content creators, the consumers and the content itself, if that content is shabby or suspect, the market prices it accordingly.
Aside from this, I see a lot of people that are ‘just here for the games’. Sure, aren’t we all. However, if the game development community starts distancing itself, and the content creators move on, then you are going to be left with a very palid, uninspired and unimportant little forum devoted to games. Fewer people will pass by, fewer will stay, fewer will take notice, and before long its game over.
And it’s game over for me.
It’s been a long ten years, I loved it here, it’s been part of my life, but it’s time to move on. I can’t remain associated with the site and I don’t feel it’s like home anymore. I gave it a day to see how things went, but it became apparent very quickly that it’s time to change level, change the game or simply switch off the console.

I am sure the admin are aware of their legal obligations, and the liabilities that arise therefrom, but would nonetheless appreciate it if the mods could delete my account and remove all traces of personal information held on their servers, and whether held online or offline, or in any capacity, in full.
