You can't just diagnose people on the spot if they're gonna be receptive to a change of heart or opinion. Going through my PMs on the way out of GAF really spelled that out for me. I've changed a lot over my 10 years and 50,000+ posts (god it hurts to type that) and I know I've changed enough people that it mattered a little bit.

That's not what I did. I just expressed my general philosophy for posting on forums. If you truly believe you can change any/everyone's mind on the internet with discourse, in the moment, it will become a full-time job. Full-stop. The Backfire Effect is a psychological affliction that is human. It affects everyone, including myself, to some degree, and the only thing we can do to combat it is to be aware that it exists. I'm not saying it's impossible for a 1v1 discourse to change someone's mind in the moment, but I believe those events are rare outliers that involve people with a certain type of conditioning amiable to that.
When all is said and done, it's largely inconsequential to how I deal with people on forums. You just won't find me involved in a pages long debates with someone because not only do I not have the time, it's conveniently fruitless.

But they were always more administrators than moderators. Given that every single other mod bailed, I can't help but wonder if they had some kind of contract for running the site and they're just completing that.

Hi everyone, to start off I hope you are all doing good.
So I heard the news in the weekend, which for me came out of nowhere and left me quite shook, but there are somethings I want to say.
I have been(was) a member on Gaf for over a year now. For me what was really problematic there was how polarized everything had the risk to become. And during the events that occurred, what caused a lot of distress for myself, was how seemingly the discussion got shot down. Now I don't know if anyone else noticed this(probably did) but there were a lot of threads regarding individuals that had either allegedly been sexually harassed, threads about sexual harassment, threads regarding controversial youtube figures and how the only right thing to do was speak out against it, boycott and demand changes to products afflicted by said things. Now tbh I never commented in any of these threads, because I never felt like I could or felt safe in doing so. I am very much against racism, as I am a minority myself, and while I haven't experienced it on myself, I do always face very generalizing and hateful viewpoints regarding people like me that do end up hurting me, so I am against those things. But then this thing happened, and while those threads were allowed, to discuss about alleged sexual harassment about everyone else, when it came to the site itself, then nope, Im gonna censor everything... Very much double standards in the extreme, taking away the freedom of speech away from the people that very well were the ones that had hegemonic discourse on neogaf regarding those topics.
I also used Neogaf as to get an overview of the news and follow the games industry, and I can't find a replacement for it. Reddit doesn't work like that due to the upvote system, and a lot of times a lot of news that i otherwise would have known on Gaf goes unnoticed, not upvoted and makes following the news therefore much harder, as Gaf had all kinds of people with very different interest, which made it easy to track down a lot of news. Is this site like this, or does anyone recommend something else? Going to subreddits just doesn't cut it, as that would take much more time and effort, to navigate through so many subreddits just to be presented with a lot of non-news.
I also loved the screenshot thread, were I was not only able to appreciate the beautiful work of others, but post a lot of shots myself, and I am wondering if this site has an equivalent. What I loved about those threads were the sheer variety in games and approaches in presenting those games, from all kinds of genres, I loved it.
That's all for now, just felt like I had to vent it out somewhere. Oh and I also wish I knew if the people I regularly saw on Gaf made it here or somewhere else as it kind of feels so fragmented.

The SHARP decline in quality of the posts on NeoGAF would be more hilarious if it hadn't happened literally over a weekend because of a self-preserving sex predator.
