By Finale Fireworker Go To PostI don't think we actually disagree very much, I was just talking about a more specific population reaction. I'll elaborate a little, but first I'll respond to your comment about the mod team and the culture they reinforced.

Because you're right that moderation was often bizarre and unpredictable. ZHugeEX, a beloved user, was banned for "self-promotion" and nobody was allowed to talk about what happened to him. That was ridiculous. He brought a ton of information to the board and facilitated excellent discussion. But because he was deemed outside the acceptable range of propriety, he was banned unceremoniously. That was not a day I was glad to be a gaffer.

Likewise, when Romancing SaGa 2 was announced for smartphones in the west, nearly an entire thread was banned for mentioning the omission of the Vita version localization. Anybody who said the word Vita in any context was banned. Over thirty people of a thread with like fifty posts. I was one of those people and my ban message told me I was insufferable. That was another day I was not glad to be a gaffer.

These kinds of experiences were common, and you're right that even prolific posters and patriots of the board suffered at the hands of extremely strict and opaque moderation. With board loyalty dissolved, people are free to challenge and mock these parameters and let out latent resentment. I don't disagree at all with the idea that even "good gaffers" are angry at putting up with the board's problems for all these years only for it to end this way.

That has burned me in particular. There were lots of things I didn't post or was very careful to mention. I often went back and forward-quoted my replies to other responses to an original post so people would have full context on something I said and I wouldn't have to constantly explain or defend a single controversial point. I did this because I preferred GAF's problems than reddit's problems, or 4chan's problems, or any of the problems I was accustomed to elsewhere on the internet. I was unhappy when friends disappeared for no reason (Neiteio) and or were Juniored for boisterous thread making (Max Criden) but I shouldered the burden of GAF's sometimes punishing parameters because I considered everything else to be "worth it."

Now that the forum is not "worth it", I have a lot of pent up frustration regarding the things I handwaved or tolerated. I was played for a fool.

But in the wake up Evilore's utter human failings, the first sign the board was collapsing were the moderators walking out. It reached a point where even the staff was unhappy with what they were being asked to do, and based on some gossip in the Discord and conjecture from other members, many mods have been unhappy for a long time with the directives they had to follow. There were definitely still power trips that only the mod responsible can own, but much of GAF's suppression and restraint seems to have come from Evilore himself. Maybe this is absolving the staff too quickly, but moving forward, I am not willing to hold that grudge.

I admit that I wasn't considerate to all the reasons remaining gaffers might be bombing their accounts. Obviously there are hundreds of them biting the bullet and the fallout is immense. In the ResetEra Discord, the motivation for doing so is very consistent. As people announce their departures and post their suicide threads, it is accompanied by a denouncement of Tyler Malka and his board - not his staff or the community. I think this shows a lot in the content of the threads as well. Suicide threads focus on the inciting incident of this controversy, not as much the forum culture.

I certainly do not deny anybody's experiences. In fact, I often followed people out of the forum when they would be banned or driven out because I didn't want their last interactions with the forum to be negative ones. I'd send them PMs for the Twitters and chat with them privately and apologize for what they went through. This was also my way of sharing responsibility for the problems the forum had. I was not blind to them. At worst, I was an apologist. But that was a role I took sincerely.

So don't think I am trying to invalidate anybody's reasons for nuking their account. When I originally responded, I was relaying a POV based on what I'd seen in the Discord and Twitter. I think the confusion comes from the post I quoted was presenting an absolute, and I responded in an absolute, when really I meant to suggest it was more than one thing.

Which is the same thing you are suggesting.

By SunhiLegend Go To PostYou know, I still lurked here over the last couple years but since I mostly stopped making gifs while watching NBA or Football games I stopped posting here aswell, but I would still keep up with the threads from time to time whenever there was a big game I was watching. I do feel a little guilty as it's taken this whole situation for me to leave GAF completely and start posting here again, I should never have stopped sorry. But I'll definitely be more active, for sports it'll mainly be playoff time for both the NBA and NFL as I can't watch them live that much anymore due to time difference. There was a time years ago where I would spend 11am to 6am watching and posting every Sunday, and during the week from the evening till like 4am, I'm not that old but I need my sleep lol, I can't do the 3 hour naps before work anymore, it's why I stopped a couple years ago. For other stuff I'll just post as normal. I don't know what's going on with ResetEra, but I just opened Discord and I'm in the server, had no idea, I'll probably post there as well once registered but that's probably gonna take a while, there's a few people from the F1 community on the server and that's pretty much the only community thread I was posting in regularly over the last year.

Seeing familiar faces here makes me happy, cause there is history with them more than GAF. Continuing to go to a place where those people no longer reside is an exercise in clinging to what was. For me, the analogy is, my "family" moved. I can stay in the old home where a new set of people moved in because the house represents a source of memories OR I can move on with my "family" and on to new memories.

I choose the latter.

I'm going to just lurk and see how the new community shapes up and maybe a few months from now it will be back to normal, but judging by the people who have started to feel like they don't need to "walk on eggshells", it feels like Gaf will turn to yet another Gaming website like they all did post-GG.
