Equality for everyone, LGBTQ rights, anti-racism, pro-feminism, pro-environment, pro-poor people, etc, etc, aren't political points, they are human decency and rights. These are literally the only times the OT would pile on someone, if they were behaving against these things.
And no, it's not "just another point of view" to not like TeH Gays, because you're religious.

The fact that conservatism embraces discriminatory practices made people following that line of thought naturally opposite to the people frequenting OT.

So, the "Group Think" was common decency, and being humanitarian.

If that is a problem, then I daresay it does not lie with the people in OT, but those who went against these principles.

But then, I see a bunch of random ones where they ask for a ban, but it's because of this supposed toxicity of the forum, not actually about EL's actions.

I gotta say, all of this hive-mind walking-on-eggshellls talk rings pretty hollow to me. Admittedly, I was an infrequent poster on GAF, but there were several cases where I got into a heated discussion. I never got banned because I was arguing in good faith and avoiding inflammatory language. There were times when I deservedly got dogpiled, but I left the thread to cool off instead of throwing a fit. It wasn't hard to avoid issues if you were a marginally decent person who was able to understand how your words would be received by others.

Maybe I'm the one who had an atypical experience, but when I see "people are tired of the hivemind," I tend to read it as "I wasn't allowed to make transphobic jokes or call people retards."

You can't seperate politics from discussion. Politics is what defines a person imo, not your profession.

There was a thread in OT earlier this year about dating someone with a different political affiliation than you. It was surprising to see some regular PoliGAF members openly admit to possibly dating a Republican despite lambasting their ilk.

A good example was TestofTide. Gave Berniebros shit but has no problem dating a Republican.

I'm not ready just yet to let go as there are still some GOOD people on gaf which are unfortunate casualties of the whole situation that I still like to keep discussing things with. It sucks for a lot of us who went to gaf for gaming /movie/pop culture discussions and avoided political and social topics as much as we could.

Still waiting for OT community to go live so I can archive a lot of it.

I definitely feel uneasy contributing to the site since its been back up. I get a sense of negative energy around it.

Man, looking at what gaf became literally overnight is so depressing. I feel bad for the mods who probably had to wade through this shit on a daily basis but it's amazing just how much if it was bubbling right under the surface. And now evilore has activated it by being an unapologetic creeper who these people can identify with and pushing away the guards at the door. I think I'm finally excepting that this is it for gaf.

I've seen some of the standard dog-pile/ban him tactics that had been used on GAF not work here and people were able to settle civilly without either party feeling ostracized or getting banned. I feel like those are the skills people should be learning and this site seems to foster and nurture those valuable adult skills.

I've already seen it happen here when I first came here in 14, I think only like 1-2 people been banned cause they were insufferable.

As horrible as it all is it’s funny to see GAF descending into an actual echo chamber of low quality, unempathetic and right wing posters. Be interesting to see longer term how much users think of it as an improvement.

It's pointless trying to contribute with a "positive" atmosphere in order to salvage what's left of the community.
