It's not that I want to doubt them, it just seems like a herculean task that could crumble once the emotion of this whole thing fades and reality sets in. I just don't see how adults with lives can keep something of GAF's size afloat without funding and the technical resources to maintain a community that size.

If you don't want to be a member of the forum, just politely ask for your account to be banned and deleted, or better yet, don't post there at all. The negativity so far has been on Malka himself, but for outsiders who are now browsing the forum, they're being met with some embarrassing and offensive posts designed to provoke.

It was a really hard downfall. I was one of those members that was always on the forum and nearly all my online interaction took place there. No more social media, only light usage on reddit, and Twitter for emergencies. When I saw the writing on the wall and realized what was going to happen, I desperately started messaging other members to maintain contact. There were so many people I saw every single day - faces in the form of avatars - and the thought of never seeing them again fucked me right up. I took GAF for granted.
I sent PMs to people I never even spoke directly to before. But when faced with losing them, suddenly everyone was family. I'm glad I did that because it helped a lot of us network and connect after the site went down for good. We got into the ResetEra Discord and have been doing digital disaster relief ever since.
I am trying not to admit how tough it was for me to lose the forum. It was really, really important to me. It had plenty of problems and there were ways I wished the forum was better, but it was the best community I was ever part of. I miss it dearly already. But I'm focusing on what's next. If we all move forward together, there will be nothing to miss.

It has the benefit of community enthusiasm, at least. But in that same way we are also vulnerable. Cerium and Co could ask for crowdfunding through Patreon or something to support the site, and hundreds of people would do it, but there's still no guarantee the site will survive. We will have the benefit of starting smaller - we won't be 100,000 people overnight. My hope is that they're taking the responsibility of running the site seriously. If we are aware of these concerns, hopefully they are too.

There is a thread over there expressing concern for the people who frequented the mental health community thread which I think is a very good point. I used to post there occasionally but haven't been in there for years. Did they have their own discord? Also, some of the replies to that thread are fucking gross, holy shit. Once the dust settles it's gonna be nothing but scum left on that site.

More like white blood cells invading an antibody, than expressing general disagreement. The moderating curated this culture.
When there's large disagreement with a minority in a civil discussion, there's a distinct lack of "otherization" that became way too common place on NeoGAF.
