By Diego! Go To PostRead this thread, got in contact with some of the PCVR community on gaf who also seem to be abandoning ship, called Evilore a creepy little cunt and got myself banned. What a morning.
There weren’t a lot of VR heads on GAF. Unfortunate because it was still probably the best place to discuss VR overall that I’ve found. I wouldn’t mind getting something along those lines rolling here.
By recon_zero Go To Posthttp://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1453438&page=1Man, this and the other account suicides mentioned earlier in this thread have been glorious.
nice
Man, it's so sad to watch. People throwing around terms like "sjw" or "faggot" like it's nothing. Call the old NeoGaf a hivemind or safespace all you like, but at least didn't have to see that kind of shit whenever I opened a thread back then.

There's my proof I was on GAF and got myself Permed yesterday.

I'm taking the closing of GAF suprisingly well. I guess that's because I became less dependant on the forum through the years.
But I still have the habit of typing neogaf.com in my URL bar lol.

It’s sad how efficient that anime avatar rule of thumb is. I get that there’s tons of decent people with anime avatars, but fuck me if half the time someone is terrible they don’t have a smiling twelve year old anime girl as an avatar.

I'm with you, I have no interest to go to ResetEra. I love this forum already, no reason to move at all.

This idea I like.
I'm curious to see what they do with Resetera, but honestly I'm happy to stick around here, so I'm not even looking for an invite at this point. If it grows into a thriving community in a year's time, great, I might join (in addition to staying here). But right now I like that this site is not trying too hard to be GAF, but it's close enough to feel comfortable.

I will stay here, had an account for ages and now will actually use it.
On the using of sl&ent as a bus station on the way to new home, I think this is just how forums have always worked. A not insignificant number of Gaffer's will stay if the content and community is there. One of the problems is that no forum updates in real-time, the way Neogaf did. That's gonna take a while to get used to.
I feel the alert system implemented in vbulletin is the best way to foster that level of engagement but even that isn't perfect.
As for neogafs return, I don't think anyone should be surprised. There was always an undercurrent of the ambivalent and Proto-GG that infected more threads that people cared to admit.
As a person of colour, there was always plenty slick talk that when unnoticed and unpunished. The whole "I cant relate to POC protagonists" or the venom for any game trailer that used any form of rap music.
Likewise, the fetishism related to some female game characters reflected some members that had less than desirable views on women, but were just too smart to express them.
I also think people are a bit overconfident that this is the death of Neogaf. I actually think a sizable amount of people will stay put because ultimately, the people who cared about minority representation and protecting women's rights were far more vocal. The silent conservative/trumpeter will rise again.
I think many of you will be disappointed to realise that a few months from now, the place will be trucking along as if you never left. The credibility of the place is shot and all ties to the industry have now been severed but it will live on.

Seeing how this all pans out in a year will be interesting. Like some others predict, I think Slaent will be the strongest community out of all the others Gaf are fleeing to, not because of the content and structure, but because of its history and availability (if that makes sense). Basically, it's built by former Gaf members and everything is in place, there are no barriers for entry.
As the structure gets updated and communities form, I think this place could draw in more people.
Slaent is a good place, I'm glad to give it my time.

By ned_ballad Go To Postmaybe Evilore was always alt right and just kept up an act because his cash cow required it?
The Paris Accords thread, for example, almost seems like something an alt righter would post when trying to “blend in” with those dang liberals
The idea of Alt-right and alt-left is kinda ridiculous in this context. Any environment which shuts down opposing views is eventually going to be abused to keep and maintain power. Right and Left have nothing to do with it and its no coincidence that the mentions used are similar.
Again opposing views does not include hate-speech.
By blackace Go To PostThey have known about us… that's what 4chan doesI think people severely underestimate the number of people who frequent(ed) GAF, 4chan, reddit, and tumblr, just adapting the personality of the site, and then sewing chaos where it suits them. It's probably really easy for someone to have been a hardcore progressive on GAF, gone to reddit and thought "I'll make fun of the "muh feels" crowd because even I'm not that bad" to vent a little and get upvotes, and then let their inner edge lord out on /v/.
I’m cracking up at people still saying they can’t say what they want or they’ll be banned when 98% of the mods are gone and the leftovers don’t want any positive social or political discussions lol
By ned_ballad Go To Postmaybe Evilore was always alt right and just kept up an act because his cash cow required it?Let's not go overboard here. ( get it, over board). "Just" because he did some questionable stuff when drunk doesn't make him alt right. Neither does his bad approach to tackling the situation. I don't think it helps anyone to dilute what the it is. Same with calling him a rapist (some have done this too). We haven't seen anything that suggests he is either.
The Paris Accords thread, for example, almost seems like something an alt righter would post when trying to “blend in” with those dang liberals
In my country we have like 10 of 12 political parties, and while 5 or 6 are to the right, "only" two of then are outright racist. One of those two is alt right. Plenty of spectrum covered by the remaining ones.

By xbhaskarx Go To Post"Some people buy roses, others get butt nekkid and jump in a shower."But that's the pick-up artist worldview. Women are this things you have to trick into getting naked because no way they, like, will feel attraction to you or want to spend time with you, that's ridiculous, so whatever you can come up to twist their brains into wanting to have sex, hey man, that's what works.

I'm not gonna comment on the games in question, but at the same time it's rude as hell to arrive in someone's home then complain how the furniture is laid out.

This I need to know. Finale was a treasure.

Hey, Where's the guy who was doing those cool cover titles?? I want to re-create a Dragonball Z/GT/Super thread and need some cool art made if possible with the Slaent tag.
I'm rooting for both SL&ENT and ResetERA, even though I have a hunch the latter will buckle under all expectations already heaped on it. I've never seen an earnest successor site last.
I think we're just going to see the community splinter along the same lines they have been: here, ResetERA, OpenCritic, Waypoint, and Easy Allies.

Any Idea how Reset Era is getting it's funding? Yes, ads obviously, but they're going to have to actually have paid staff to manage a sizeable website, get the server space to run it, and all the other little details. That's going to need some sort of initial investment.

A GAFfer named Cerium is apparently paying for it out of pocket and formed an LLC alongside some other admins the other day. That's all I've really heard. Apparently they're not looking for ad revenue or monetization at the moment.

To be fair, NeoGAF itself was an earnest successor site.
ResetEra is going to be iffy. There's obviously a lot of members (1,000 in the Discord alone) who are anxious to get started and build something great. The team developing it seems to be really passionate and invested in the project - registering it as a real LLC and dedicating full-time resources to it - but it's obviously a desperate experiment.
I'm determined to help make it work from the ground up. But it will take unanimous participation to be successful. In the meantime (and maybe after), it's nice to take shelter with fellow expats.

Evilore just did what was needed to keep the site going. People there were more progressive and wanted to discuss feminism/racism/lgbt+/etc issues, so he gave them that.
What he's own political views are it's irrelevant. He just wanted the money. Can't blame him for that honestly, if that 56k a month estimate is real.

By ashep Go To PostLike, it ain't the worst thing in the world, and I know the mods aren't bothered, but the amount of people blatantly using this site as a transit lounge is a bit annoying. For what it's worth, I think a decent number of us are quite happy here and very skeptical about ResetERA. I don't see this as a transit lounge as such, but as a new place with some old acquaintances that I'm transitioning into.
By all means check out resetera when it opens but lamenting that you might be stuck here until you're verified or whatever is wack.

I don't know how the eff GAF went over my head, but you're right.
It's not that I want to doubt them, it just seems like a herculean task that could crumble once the emotion of this whole thing fades and reality sets in. I just don't see how adults with lives can keep something of GAF's size afloat without funding and the technical resources to maintain a community that size.
I dunno, maybe Cerium's a secret billionaire or something.
