Yeah, the way Tyler handled this and recent matters is why things went down like this. Never a single apology for something either. It took him like three days to make this post? Even if things did went down differently between him and the victim, there is no credibility to him at this point (due to his recent bannings in regards to a sexual assault topic, his censorship practices, the past incidents of indecency).

And no OT anymore? There will be a ton of account suicides over the time probably. Looking at neogaf, it currently sure feels like it is crumbling down to irrelevancy. And it is most certainly not safe for work. Sad to see.

The ‘visiting your old house with unfamiliar people living there’ analogy is perfect. I don’t recognise gaf anymore. It’s actually really sad to me, I’ve never experienced a feeling like this before, a huge part of my life just disappearing. Sounds stupid to say about a web forum (to people in real life, I know you guys understand), but I’ve never felt so welcome and at home somewhere online like GAF, even though I didn’t post much (this isn’t my GAF username). Seeing it the way it is now, filled with assholes, is just strange and uncomfortable. It’s nice here though.

Yeah, it hurts. I was on the site for 10 years and interacted with so many great people yet rarely posted. I really hope the good people find us and build something stronger than ever, although I'm worried about those that are unaware of slaent and the upcoming ResetERA.

I hope everyone with good intentions makes it through the vetting process... looked at my PS community and it's switched to ResetERA, so hopefully that's enough to vouch for me? Not totally familiar with discord.

Hi.

An allegation of sexual misconduct has been made against me by an ex. It's not true, the individual making the accusation isn't credible, the story doesn't reconcile logically with the facts, and there's plenty of evidence and witnesses to corroborate that. It'll be a process.

All allegations of this nature are serious, of course. I first got word of it on Wednesday when a screenshot of a Facebook post was handed to Voat. I immediately talked with my mod team about the contents of the screenshot and clarified that it was baseless and explained some of the details concerning my former associations with her, and tried to ensure any concerns from the team were addressed fully and transparently to everyone's satisfaction. On Thursday I heard that she had deleted the accusation from Facebook, and wasn't entirely sure how to proceed from there or how this would all play out in the public space at that point. Then, Friday morning, the screenshot made its way to NeoGAF and chaos ensued.

I was in the process of writing a statement that entire day to address formally address the allegation, but the community had erupted in a flash that morning. While the moderation team was trying to restore the peace, accusations and threats concerning the screenshot started shifting to them as well by association with me, and I was asked by my team to do something to fix things and get the heat off of all of them at least. I was beyond exhausted by that point, though, stretched too thin in the time since the post had first appeared and seeing unprecedented events unfold on NeoGAF. I was slow and weak. I failed to handle it quickly enough and let the team down. Before I could finish a statement and get it out there, understandably some mods hit their emotional limit, expressed concerns about the community coming after them, and decided to leave. A few people resigned, and many more quickly followed for similar reasons, citing stress and harassment. The site started breaking under load spikes leading up to the first resignations, too, and then flatlined altogether, so issuing a statement at that time on NeoGAF itself became impossible for the time being, and my attention shifted toward the moderation team's future.

Since that whole mess, lasting from Friday morning through Saturday, before we formally went offline for maintenance and repair and restructure, we've just been trying to figure out the best course of action for NeoGAF going forward. And as stories began being published by various outlets, I issued some comments to the press, since everything coming out was proving to be sensationalized, opportunist, and unprofessional.


We've all become increasingly stressed and weary this year in ways even I'm not accustomed to by now, and discussions on heated news, political issues, and social issues on the off-topic side of the site have become areas no one has wanted to moderate in the open for fear of backlash or just general exposure to the inevitable toxicity. I've gone in there myself to take the heat, since it's very much my responsibility to do so before anyone else's, but there's been little headway, mostly just more anger and resentment and a lot of bans. I don't think this necessarily reflects on our community; more so the tone of the entire internet this year with regards to heated issues.

That's all going to inform the way forward for NeoGAF as we refocus on what the main goals are supposed to be for the site. The mod team will talk about more specifics on what that will entail below.


One last thing. The NeoGAF mod team is here for this community; all of you. You have no obligations to respect me or believe anything I say about my personal life one way or another, but if you're going to be here and participate on NeoGAF, respect the mod team by following the rules and behaving. The team is diminished at the moment and the folks who stuck around care very much about this community and its future. Be considerate of them. That's non-negotiable.

I just woke up and read the statement, and a few things.

1. Ok, is it me, or does this read like the most GamerGatish thing ever?
"Let's focus on our Vidya games instead!" This is like their rallying cry.

2. What interests me is, if it is true that, according to him, the Mods resigned because they felt under pressure and attacked by the community, instead of because they feel that he did something wrong.
Because that's a really big thing, if true. He, by all accounts, frames it as if they did not think he did something wrong, and simply left because they feared backlash by the people visiting the forum.
If that is a lie, we're getting into Trump-country of lying.

3. Also, he's literally calling the News "Fake News" with his comment about how they are sensationalist, opportunist, and unprofessional.

4. I can see, with his misconduct becoming public, how he'd want to keep off-topic closed, since it was the place on NeoGaf where people collected who would condemn him for his behaviour. Naturally he feels the best way is to take these people out of the picture, because all of them have literally become his enemy, now that it's been revealed that he attempted to something many despised, i.e. the callous, entitled behaviour he displayed in regards to women.

5. All Women's fault. Pox on them. POX!

All in all this is extremely troubling. By all accounts, the guy running NeoGaf just revealed himself as GamerGater.

Yeah I'm done with that place. I have no idea where i'll end up but this place seems cool and I doubt anyone in HaloGAF now would remember me from the Halo 3 - Reach days so Restera is probably not an option atm. Fuck it's depressing to see it end this way.

After reading some of the comments in the newly reopened GAF, it seems like a decent portion of folks still posting never understood what made that site special in the first place.

I love E3 leaks as much as anyone, but the sheer scope of the communities and quality posters lost in this thing is staggering. Pruning GAF down to just gaming misses the point of all the things it actually offered.

Man, me too. GAF had so many users, a ton of them are bound to miss out on where people are moving to. Like, just imagine being away for a dang weekend, you'd miss everything. D;

If people within your PS community know you and are joining ERA, there's probably a good chance they could vouch for you. But it might be hard to get on ERA right away w/o going through discord channels -- if your community has one I would just ask around for it. I'm pretty new to discord, too, but it's not too hard after you get used to it. Just a little confusing at first.

What a weird few days. I was lost for a bit but found people discussing other places and seeing familiar names again is great. Not having the GAF format is so odd, it's hard to shake. Never knew about those bad things at GAF except over zealous mods but little context on that until now, it's all quite shocking and eye opening as is reading what people think of GAF in other places.

Had a quick browse here and it's nice. I'll check out 'resetera' to see if the community has moved and what the format is like, simplicity like GAF really appeals to me. How do you even get into resetera, no idea but wait and see.
