I wouldn't be surprised. Someone I was having a PM conversation with over the wolfenstein 2 Nazi punching advertisement thing got banned mid-convo and I didn't report him or anything(never reported anyone, honestly). Mind, I never would have reported him but the lengths he was going to justify being pissed off at wolfenstein's advertisements made me nearly certain that someone had read his PMs and banned him over it. He certainly hadn't made any posts in the hours that the PM convo took place over.

I don't necessarily agree with the hypothesis that forums need to grow organically. I think that online communities are mostly the result of critical mass and inertia, and both of those metrics can be courted. That being said, I still consider it a big unknown, and maybe it is time to let it die to some extent. I have the same problem with RPG Codex or r/competitivehearthstone that I did with GAF, honestly, in many ways.
I guess GAF is back up, for now. Will watch for the trainwreck on the train home.

What would there be to talk about? Games? As if.
I had no idea about the Amirox child porn thing until GAF imploded. Amirox had gotten de-moded for going back and editing/deleting old posts and yet the owner goes and does the same thing once getting called out for sexual harassment/assault? How did they not expect a revolt? Anyway, Patrick over at Waypoint has a great follow up article in which he spoke to Evilore and the victim. Right now I'm look for a new home/homes. This place seems pretty chill, and I recognize a lot of old GAF avatars. Waypoint is a pretty cool community too that I've joined, but they've come out and said they aren't going to let their forums become a GAF replacement, which is cool. It doesn't fit what with what they are trying to do there in their community, and I respect that. I'm interested in ResetEra, but, boy, that forum is going to have a target painted on its back from day 1 by Gamer Gaters and GAF haters. I'm interested, but already there's a bunch of fake Twitters and I imagine there will be a bunch of fake url's and domain names trying to confuse and stifle the thing from taking off. I don't think I can go back to GAF even with what Tyler is trying to do with it now - making it solely video game focused - considering these allegations. I hope I can hang out here, and I promise I won't annoy anybody or shit post if you'll have me. I may even just lurk a lot if that's cool. Seems like a good community.

And it was for being sarcastic about a poster that was being misogynistic. My problem was I didn't quote the person directly, so it came across like I was being that way too. I thought I had solid post history and the mods would know I was being sarcastic but clearly whichever mod banned me did not.
Anyway, I found it easy to avoid a ban for the most part. Think before posting, if you think it might offend somebody don't do it. If certain mods are popping into the conversation, just stay out of it. I always felt like the mods shut down the conversations because nobody was going to disagree with their viewpoint in fear of facing a ban.

To be fair, PMs are not secure on vBulletin 3. Anyone with access to the database can read them. There was even a plugin that allowed admins to read them without needing database access.

Maybe. I kind of made a rule for myself not to play games while at school/work/pub trans though, so in reality I'll probably just be time wasting here or elsewhere. Which kinda defeats the purpose.

Sad shit... I know plenty of people shit on it, but OT was genuinely to me the most enjoyable part of that site and I couldn't stand gaming at all except for the conference threads and other big news.
Anyway, gonna head back to get receipts for the new site if possible and bask in the cluster fuck that will undoubtedly ensue. Otherwise, I hope era won't be too hard to get let in. At the very least I'm glad more and more exgafers are finding their way over here.
