I booted up my Surface at work and a GAF tab was open. Out of reflex I clicked to go to the OT and got the down for maintenance. I still can't believe that the site is completely down. I wonder how long EL will keep it down and "under maintenance" before trying to attempt to go back to normal.

that's a skill. I was up to 4 or 5 just a couple of weeks each mostly for being sarcastic. I agree it was something you learned over time to just avoid threads instead of trying to fight it. That was probably a big part of the problem when people say gaf is an echo chamber, the dissenting voices weren't banned they just stopped posting for fear of losing access to the good parts of gaf they liked.

It was pretty garbage. It kept out some of the rif raf, but it helped create the culture that resulted in it's implosions. Banning meta discussion, banning discussion on banned users, banning anyone who questioned authority etc etc.Man we must have been posting at two different GAF sites because I've see a lot of that stuff across the site. I mean people talked about banned users all the time without consequence. You say its arbitrary but context and quality of discussion has always played a role from what I've seen.
I was a member at GAF for a long long time. I say plenty of quality posters in Poligaf get ban hammers over the years. Including the walking political encyclopedia that was Benji.

Waypoint's post for NeoGAFers is interesting.
