Are people really still hung up on GAF being gone? I mean yeah we might not see some of the posters ever again but get a group of folks together and we will still talk games, movies, and whatever...
The only thing I know for sure is ... Reddit is an awful substitute. Don't get me wrong I love Reddit but the format doesn't suit the kind of gaming forum I'm looking for.
By thekad Go To PostA group of people eager to feign outrage, jump on any alleged improprieties, and signal how moral and progressive they are to people in the in-group.Y'all missing a key element. Whatever lore told them then they bounced.
That account from the woman suddenly causing the entire moderation team to quit and, apparently, tons of threads being made calling for EL to step down is ridiculous on its face - especially considering all the other moronic things we know for a fact he did that should have caused much more ire.
By DirtCase Go To PostThe only thing I know for sure is … Reddit is an awful substitute. Don't get me wrong I love Reddit but the format doesn't suit the kind of gaming forum I'm looking for.Reddit doesn't have a sense of community since everything is so split apart. Like I recognize most people posting in this thread but I have no clue who anyone is on Reddit and I've been posting on there for six years.
By Nelo Ice Go To PostMore Badass posted here earlier. He mentioned he saved the info from cached pages of his threads so he may make a new thread here in the near future.Ah that's great always loved his passion for games. Will gladly contribute to any indie threads he makes.
By John Rabbit Go To PostI took "where we are now" to mean "why we're reflecting on the ills and flaws of NeoGAF" and not "why NeoGAF no longer exists".Sure, I think that kind of self-reflection is healthy. I just don't think that yoking it to the demise of the site stands up to any kind of close scrutiny and it is more intellectually honest to disentangle the two.
But you're right.

I still couldn't find another gaming forum that's as fast-moving as GAF. It's just full of life.
Think im gonna go make a thread about the Yu-Gi-Oh Twitch marathon, or try to, since. I'm on mobile it might be a tad bit clunky but oh well, cya
By blackace Go To PostAre people really still hung up on GAF being gone? I mean yeah we might not see some of the posters ever again but get a group of folks together and we will still talk games, movies, and whatever…Seeing as how GAF was my primary source for news about almost anything I was into, and could start a discussion about any of it at any time, yeah I'm kind of "hung up" on it's absence. The sheer amount of aggregated data alone was worth it. Suddenly I don't have those channels of access anymore so it's going to take time to replace them and the thought that I'll have to do that over several mediums/sites instead of a singular source is a little disappointing.
By blackace Go To PostAre people really still hung up on GAF being gone? I didn't make a lot of personal connections on the forum but haven been able to find something as of yet that works as a suitable replacement. Then again I just found out about slaent, so I'll see how it goes.

The difficulty is that a lot of people will have a hard time finding similar news, reportings, review megathreads, and so on all in one place in a neat and tighty reading format.
Easier said then done.

By blackace Go To PostAre people really still hung up on GAF being gone? I mean yeah we might not see some of the posters ever again but get a group of folks together and we will still talk games, movies, and whatever…It's been a routine for many folks for many years. The type of discussions, and the level of discourse is something you don't find at very many places. The strict moderation that kept out hateful crap was also something you don't find much on the internet.

Yeah, GAF had a generally great format for fostering communities. Here's to hoping that its successor can match and improve that (sensibly, not for the sake of visual garbage).
To be fair. This forum seems absolutely fine for my needs. I do not need another GAF cesspool which it became the last two-three years.
By blackace Go To PostAre people really still hung up on GAF being gone? I mean yeah we might not see some of the posters ever again but get a group of folks together and we will still talk games, movies, and whatever…the problem is finding a pretty active site that provides me with all the new daily hot topics and news (gaming is not that important to me, actually) which also isn't drenched in alt-right bullshit. Which pretty much leaves me with reddit, but it's just not really the same
By blackace Go To PostAre people really still hung up on GAF being gone? I mean yeah we might not see some of the posters ever again but get a group of folks together and we will still talk games, movies, and whatever…I am, but I'm also hopeful that the millions of people who had a taste of what that place offered that was good -- moderation that kept hate outside the gate, instantaneous news for every form of entertainment I am into, deep, turbo-geek-level discussions on every topic I can name, and tons of people who were politically like-minded -- will take their expectations to a new place and turn that into a replacement.

By Inflatablemidget Go To PostYep. Users celebrating a fellow user getting banned because they held a viewpoint/opinion contrary to the people dog piling him made GAF unbelievably toxic too often. And it got infinitely worse the past 5 or so years.I swear there were folks whose primary objective was to idle in posts with hot button topics of discussion and act outraged over anything controversial to try and illicit a mod response. Like it was a competition or something. And there were plenty of folks with alt-accounts all too happy to oblige them. No shortage of folks with an outside-of-the-box opinion getting dogpiled on and banned when they didn't even utter so much as a personal attack against anyone in the forum. We saw some notorious graveyard threads that were more or less left open as bait for just that reason... to cull sacrifices from the herd as it were and appease the GAF gods.
Yeah, there are things about that place I won't miss. That said, there were plenty of folks justifiably banned for cultivating hate speech or personal attacks or slander that I had no regrets seeing expunged from the community. And GAF's utility as a gaming/entertainment news aggregator and its assorted community OTs were second to none.
But life goes on. There once was a time where we could only get our gaming chatter from local dial-up bulletin boards and Usenet feeds. We'll get past this as well.

Mostly stuck to OT GAF. Existing backlog is large enough, so I'm not really interested in buying new games - no matter the price.
give it some time, it will organically grow.
not even 48hrs in and we have OT threads being created by exGaffers already.

I joined Slaent when the snowflakes from Gaf complained about using the word Cunt on Football Gaf and Evillore nuked it. Since that day I knew that the place had gone to shit. I agree that Gaf had become horrible towards people and i would dare say as the equivalent of R/the_donald by going on witch hunts and setting the you're with me or against me attitude. Pretty much Evillore and the mods forgot to balance the type of people who joined. I'll keep driving by on Slaent. Sup @ Pulga
I'm impressed with what I'm seeing here so far.

Given that I rarely posted on gaf I mainly enjoyed it because it was a great place to get the latest news for the most part, be it gaming, political, etc. It was basically the equivalent of reading the paper in the morning for me and with it gone I feel like I'm gonna have to try and keep tabs on multiple outlets for the time being. I'm sure a SLANT here could easily fill that void though if the community works for it.
The anti-hate moderation was also a big plus in my book.

My only concern is that some mods and Gaffers are currently working on a new forum, ResetEra. There's also that opencritic forum that's already been displayed. Some folks may want to settle here while some others may jump into there. In the end, the community will be split.
I would say that many if not most gaf posters were your standard slightly left-leaning liberal types, but there were a small but very vocal group of celebrity posters who were allowed by the mods to get away with stuff that would get normal posters banned. You all know this is true, we're all heard heard posters say that they learned to stay out of certain threads or deleted their half written posts in fear of getting dog-piled and banned.
For me it was the sheer size of the place. I had just finished Dreamfall Chapters and was looking forward to reading the thoughts of others who had completed the game. The number of contributors meant I knew there would be some discussion of any game.
It also allowed me to hear of games I might not have otherwise - fir example, I’m about to start Observer - again, because I saw Gaffers recommendations. That’s where Gaf shone for me.

If you knew how to navigate GAF, it was the best message board out there. Mostly keep to community threads, ignore some crazies and avoid toxic threads and you were good. When certain people entered a thread you knew it‘d go to shit almost immediately.
By Kabro Go To Postgive it some time, it will organically grow.I agree with this and I think a lot of community building here will be driven by ex-gaffers who are willing to put in the time to build new OTs, make new threads for news, and foster communities. The things that can't be replaced are the sheer number of active users and the catch all nature of gaf for video games news. The death of gaf was also the death of a lot of collective knowledge and tradition. Plus, this site does need some serious updates to be more community friendly in terms of user interface if it wants to fill some of the void left by gaf, some of which is already forthcoming.

By TheHunter Go To PostWe can try to make here a good news outlet.Slaent looks like a really cool site from what I've seen, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna stick around. In the end, I'll probably go where the majority goes. If it happens to be this place, all the better. This forum has cultivated it's own community over the years and doesn't desperately want to be GAF 2.0, and I respect that. I'll hang around for a while at least and see if this is something I can get used to
Not gaf but something better.
I've been lurking GAF for about 10 years, posting for about 4, and I just have to mirror what others are saying. GAF was the absolute best place on the entire internet to get gaming news, reviews, partake in communities and anything gaming related all in one easy to digest spot. Nothing came close to it. It's really sad for me to see it go, because there's seriously nothing equivalent. And I have looked many places. It had such a hustle and bustle community that kept it flowing. I sincerely hope another site truly takes its place. Now that it's gone, I definitely feel a void on the internet itself. GAF was most likely the largest videogame forum on the net left standing and in its absence I'm turning to as many places as I can. I've started a RSS feed on all my old sites prior to gaf being the only one I need. This is a tough time for me personally, because I know that it won't be the same.

By blackace Go To PostAre people really still hung up on GAF being gone? I mean yeah we might not see some of the posters ever again but get a group of folks together and we will still talk games, movies, and whatever…Well, I had been going to GAF for about a decade at this point. It's definitely weird to have a site you frequented for that long just completely disappear on a random Saturday.
What I liked about it, and will be hard to replace, is the fast moving Gaming forum. It was clear and easy to see all the information, new and popular threads would be right there on the front page, and if you refreshed a minute later it would be completely different. It was a great aggregate of news across the gaming industry and in many cases even broke the news first. And in between all the news there were also fun sub-communities. Like if I was following a game, I could just keep that most recent thread about it open in a new tab for weeks to follow anything new that might break or just chit chat about the topic. It was very casual and convenient.
Everything involving politics festered and became pure cancer to the forum, that's obvious. And that I won't miss. But I never considered that the heart of the board even if it started to have a very negative effect on everything in the last year especially. The heart of the board was that Gaming forum.
Ideally if you were a member of solid GAF OT (Gaming or Off Topic), just go and recreate a new OT here on Sl&ent and invite others in. Many are looking for the same exact haunt. Just check in on this thread first to see who's claiming to create an OT first. If it ain't claimed then create an OT post and off we go.

Almost 3 years there with no ban and that's mostly because I'm not a total dick but partly because I knew when to back out/avoid threads all together chose not to respond to certain people. I learned from lurking which posters/mods to avoid. I was watching that Boxoffice massacre Evilore went on and calling the bans lol.
As I said before, it was going to happen whenever GAF died either through natural means or like this, that the community would splinter. It happens on all major online communities but for the most part people filter in to places that have been established either before their community or long enough to have the tools to re-create the community they want. Slaent is definitely that place, it very much has most of the tools bar some simple ones like subscriptions, self-colour quoting, top/bottom page buttons and directory path. Other than that its pretty damn gravy compared to GAF.
Hell, I've only been here for less than 12 hours and it feels blissful using Slaent with its modern features. The OT's actually feel like true OT's with fresh paint making them pop out thanks to the headers and way the site handles desktop/mobile. Shit is cash and I'm keen to stay. Obviously Slaent has its own rules and mindset on how to conduct their forums but so far its feeling like a great place to discuss everything, and I've even replaced my old GAF bookmark with Slaent, so I'm committed!

Damn, i totally forgot about all the people trying to access NeoGaf, seeing the maintenance message and leaving again without knowing what happened. I only found this site after using google to see what happened, accessing a cached version of the Off Topic area and looking through the "Gaming forums like GAF" thread, I doubt many people will do that...
By DirtCase Go To PostThe only thing I know for sure is … Reddit is an awful substitute. Don't get me wrong I love Reddit but the format doesn't suit the kind of gaming forum I'm looking for.
Same here. fine for news but for discussion? All of the subreddits I follow are gaming related and they all feature picture threads being on the front page with the comment section being a contest on who can make the funniest joke.
Megathreads are such as mess because of the unorganized text messaging format. Threads trying to discuss gets less than 50 posts(one page on gaf) before getting downvoted off.
I also find the concept of downvoting and burying opinions you disagree to be toxic.
