By Alcotholic Go To PostOnce again, Gaf is notorious, so this isnt really surprising. It'll die down though. I guess reading other responses made me realize the successor won't have that much influence on the industry.Treating this like a marketing stunt is some real dumb shit. Unveils and countdowns to logos and names.
They should've just kept mum about the entire thing until they had a working forum to send people to.
By Sblargh Go To PostI think we need spaces in society where even extremists views can be debated. I don't want the internet forum where I discuss marvel movies and star trek to be a place where I have to mingle with someone who casually believe that a white ethnostate is desirable.
This. Folks still cryin "freedom of peach" over privately owned web forums not allowing folks to say whatever.
As dumb as ResetEra is, NeoGAF was also a dumb name. Also a logo can be temporary and updated in the future. I hope they come up with a better name though.
By Arkeband Go To PostIf I might be so bold, there was no communism/Marxism on GAF, at least no threads dedicated to it. On the other hand, 4chan is known for pictures of dead minorities, doxxing threads, and questionably legal pornography, so the idea that both have “their vices” is really misguided at best and disingenuous at worst.
Racism really isn’t an opinion that needs to be aired and discussed, it is the bad behavior that as you say should be “discouraged” and in generally every professional venue in America tends to be met with severe consequences.
While there was never any explicitly discussed topics, anyone familiar with stalinist Russia would immediately recognize the similarities between the way the USSR policed it's citizens and NeoGAF moderated it's users.
I'm not trying to criticize you guys, just point out my own comparisons
In Soviet Russian society under Stalin, you said a single sentence that the government didn't like and you ended up dead or in a Siberian gulag
On NeoGAF, you said a single sentence that the moderators didn't like and ended up temporarily or permanently banned.
I'm just saying that the core logic is exact.

I'd just chalk that up to simple authoritarianism haha, definitely none of the mods were communists/Stalinists.

By Lloyd Go To PostWaypointVice has been mentioned quite a bit, but I did see GAF members on GiantBomb's forums too. It'll be fractured for awhile, until a big dev posts a link to one of the sites and then everyone will go to that spot. I'm hoping for Slaent to take off and be the next big thing because it currently has the best visibility and forum set up. I mean, try the mobile website, it's a fucking dream.
By AyoHolUp Go To PostWhile there was never any explicitly discussed topics, anyone familiar with stalinist Russia would immediately recognize the similarities between the way the USSR policed it's citizens and NeoGAF moderated it's users.Sure, but it's still an argumentative fallacy to compare the two. Certain anecdotal perspectives can make things appear like bigger deals than they actually are, but I guarantee if you yourself had been living under Stalin and everything that entailed you'd be a little more hesitant to make that equivalence.

Context is everything man.
If you even alluded or made a sly joke regarding the questionable actions of EL or the mods? You'd get erased from the forum. No 'permaban' a full on erasure. I've seen it. Hell mostly everyone's seen it when the collapse started. I can't comment on anything but what ive seen.
There was another poster -- can't recall the name - that was arguing with the admins about the movie thing w/ ScreenJunkies and the moment a retort came out dude got wiped. It happens. Not as excessively as people exaggerate it, but it happens.

By AyoHolUp Go To PostThis is exactly what my suspicions lead me to believe. I could not believe that there was this much support over some pretty fringe ideas that I have never seen in real life, and I live in a liberal east coast state.
I know I have a lot of negative eyes on me right now, but I actually empathize with you guys. You had a huge community that only tried to do good by implementing strict rules to help ensure that everyone has a pleasant experience.
What went wrong was that this system was abused and taken way past the overton window of acceptability in society slowly over time. As less people began to voice their disagreement, the small vocal minority took complete control by silencing anyone who disagreed or was considered "offensive" by a select few of essentially omnipotent users.
Just food for thought, but again, I'm sorry you lost your home site. I'd be bummed if that happened to me, and I do sympathize with your loss.
Honestly the politics/SJW thing was such a small fraction of actual interactions on the site too it didn’t really have as big of an impact on things as some people perceived from the outside.
Whenever it got really overbearing or out of control you could count on the community to shut it down or steer it in a different direction - regardless of mod interference.
Appreciate you being a little levelheaded and open, not something I/we always see from good old /pol/.

This sort of shit on both sides is just dumb the slippery slope argument is a well worn and discredited trope. Tax cuts don’t lead to facism and universal health care won’t lead to Marxism. Okay!? Middle ground isn’t selling out it’s practical reality.
lmao @ GAF being Stalinist Russia
Fam the site is dead because Evilore was creeping on a woman in the shower and the mods/users freaked out the way they freaked out on every issue of this sort. The site was then nuked by parties unknown. If Evilore never did this, GAF would still be trucking along, police state mods and all. Let's not lose track of what happened here.

Mhmm.. That's definitely not good, this is going to be a hot topic for most of my feed in the coming weeks isn't it? I already see the Boogie or Jim Sterling Videos popping up and other sites reporting on it. Can't believe this happened in such a short amount of time.

I live in a country that lived under an anticomunist military junta for 20 years. There was a ministry of censorship and people would disappear and be murdered for having Karl Marx books on their houses. I personally know people who were locked in a basement and tortured for speaking their minds about a government who was "protecting" us from imaginary comunista. The "core logic" is not stalinist. It is shitty people with power.
And it is really in bad taste to compare people who were murdered in a gulag for fighting against tirany with a morthefucking web fĂłrum about videogames.
I like it here. Started my first OT, for The Deuce.

Is there a countdown? Seems to me like they've decided on just enough info to let people know that there's something coming. People are flooding other sites looking for one in case you didn't notice?
Doesn't seem at all like marketing, it's just people taking info from the discord that's used to communicate w people looking for a new 'home'
By AyoHolUp Go To Post3: I don't want to delve in the merits of different ideologies, but I'm really curious about one thing: how many people on NeoGAF we're proponents of the strict far-left leaning political climate it was known for?
I fully know what it's like to disagree with certain ideas that my preferred site seems to hold a status quo towards- but, and I am asking because my biases skew my opinion on this- how many people thought that the groupthink dynamic was very strong?
Look, I'll just be blunt, I've seen some really really fringe far left ideas that are just absurd being paraded in NeoGAF like they were generally accepted views held by the userbase. I refuse to accept that the groupthink was that bad, and I totally see a reason as to why you wouldn't even think to post about disagreeing- I just need to know one thing, are we talking a very small vocal minority? It just sounds like people just did not ever disagree to avoid getting immediately banned.
I would say the vocal minority was what propelled GAF. We were all libs. Like dyed to the wool libs who wanted free access to education, health care, and non-discriminatory policies. 100% of the population on gaf was that. It started as a gathering place for middle-class, college going, PC enthusiasts. It's not hard to realize those people are gonna be the more wealthy, white, educated and tech focused people.
A place was created where racists were banned. We thought we were the vanguard for change. Early GAF was mostly tech and discussing how more minority representation was needed. I don't know how it's view from other sites was known. Apparently the banning of people who say nigger, fag or kike was a novelty in that era. I was an early adopter. It was fun to accuse others of blatant racism and then watch them being banned.
For a long time it was just that. Argue that blacks are dumber, lazier, or genetically non superior was a moral sin. Instaban. I led many the charge.
I think the change came when Bish started his Ban tour of 2012. It was Obama vs. Romney and suddenly being a republican was a mortal sin. I didn't care because I'll vote whoever as a D by their name. But suddenly the idea of less money for social programs, desire to fund the military, change the tax rate, became a GOOD or BAD scenario.
And Bish totally pushed that. Evilore ignored it. And the other mods in power said nothing.
So from what I understand Bish and Shinobi are consulting on the OpenCritic forum and have no connection to the guys over at ResetEra,
Shinobi might cause people to flock over for the insider info. I can see that OpenCritic place becoming something similar to The Escapist forums.
I think ResetEra is going to go through a lot more growing pains precisely because it's, from the looks of it, trying to recreate GAF, and I think that's a no-go.

Yeah... huge difference between a ban from a video gaming site and being whisked off into the night by govt. sanctioned officials.
Dafuq you on about One sentence? Yes you can and should be banned for saying the wrong sentence but that in no way equates a forum banning you for saying "one sentence" to a communist regime. Cmon man

No, that's not "what went wrong" and your characterization is completely off. Regarding current events, what went wrong was that a site owner turned out to be a hypocritical asshole and instead of doing the right thing, took the whole site down with him.
Now if you want to complain about the moderating at NeoGAF, that's a completely different issue. And frankly, after spending the weekend looking around at other sites, I find it laughable to criticize NeoGAF for "silencing opinions" - 5 minutes of poking around voat was enough for me to see that it was an echo chamber of vile bullshit. And thebore is like the Frankenstein monster of forums - just an ugly mess. People are flawed and no system will be perfect, but the moderation made GAF consistently readable every day for years.
Now, I want to give you the benefit of the doubt that you're being sincere with all this...but your comment about racism and communism has me leaning toward "being trolled."
By AyoHolUp Go To PostLet's assume that the countless studies are actually true, and that Africans actually do have a lower IQ, on average, than whites and Asians.
Rather than fighting to suppress that information, we could utilize modern day genetic science to figure out if we could potentially introduce the same genetics responsible for cognitive ability into the genome of the African people.
Holy shit, trolled hard.

Brazil. And our version of alt-right is people wishing the dictatorship would come back. Revisionit history about how everyone who was tortured is lying. People inside the military winking that an "intervention" might be necessary.
Times are tough. I am not a leftist, but this line that communism has the monopoly on autoritarianism is actively working to create a future where I might be murdered just like people were a few decades ago. Because it was the line used in the first place.
