By Labor Go To PostI was Massive Duck on gaf. I didn't want to talk about amirox in the BCT because everytime we talked about anything suspect happening on Gaf in general we got threatened with a lock or just locked. I'm sure as a lurker you knew that. What an anti-climax.
If you or one of the other troglodytes who accused me of supporting him were upset because I didn't want to waste talking about it, here's something just for you: Amirox is a fucking pedophile, Amirox 64, etc.
Fuck off.

This article revealed many things and there seems to be more into this.

By TheRightDeal Go To PostYeah I'm officially pulling for this place, the design is so slick and everyone has been extremely welcoming. Everything I've seen about ResetEra is making me wary, and I don't have my original email to sign back up anyway. Hopefully both are hugely successful but I see this as being more of a home along with a host of discords to keep up with some of the broken communities.
I'm really digging the vibe here too! I hope it takes off and becomes the new GAF.
Was busy all week and missed the fall of the forum I spent so much time reading. I'm pretty up to everything now, but I really wish I could see what's happening in the Discord.

I donāt really understand how someone can self-identify as āfrom 4chanā when itās anonymous. And thatās not even touching the social implications of what that site is both historically known for and what it currently is, maybe the worst of all being /pol/, but okay.
By Pastry Go To PostI think the days of devs having as close contact with a GAF as they had is over. They were only there because of the sway that GAF had. Thatās gone now.
It's a timing issue imo. If the community finds/creates a common replacement for GAF before the active user-base disperses it might be possible to build something similar, and hopefully better. But with every day that passes the chances decrease. I once saw a forum vanish because it went down due to technical issues for over a month, after it came back online the active user-base had halved.
There was a guy named Labor on GAF who acted just like you. Did your name change to Massive Duck C.M. The guy who told people in the thread revealing Amir0x as a pedo to just stop talking about it? Maybe if you just did that in your insular community I could halfway understand you were "just trying to protect" people by not talking about a pedo.

By ProfessorLobo Go To PostThere were some areas that probably went a little too far, and the moderating got bad in recent years. However, I really had zero interest in reading about homophobia or racism or practically any thoughts that a Trump supporter had, and it was heaven in this way.
I can absolutely understand not wanting to have opposing opinions on very deep topics like politics. Believe me, I do. I happen to be a moderately conservative dude in the music industry. I don't even disagree with a decent amount of the criticisms of trump, I just didn't want to hear a political argument as to why Hillary is so perfect.
I never thought I had the right to dictate whether someone had the right to have certain opinions be essentially illegal. Hell, I have huge criticisms for 4chan trying to do the same exact thing on the opposite side of the political spectrum.

I swear this isn't bait, or a raid, I just figured that I might as well ask the actual users of NeoGAF about some aspects of what went down, and why.
So- I have just a few questions to start with
1: I can't find a good sense of a timeline at the moment, can I get an accurate window from start to finish? I just want to know how long it took.
2: Was this something that was potentially known beforehand by mods and admins? I can't tell if the sudden moderator drop off is from shock or not.
3: I don't want to delve in the merits of different ideologies, but I'm really curious about one thing: how many people on NeoGAF we're proponents of the strict far-left leaning political climate it was known for?
I fully know what it's like to disagree with certain ideas that my preferred site seems to hold a status quo towards- but, and I am asking because my biases skew my opinion on this- how many people thought that the groupthink dynamic was very strong?
Look, I'll just be blunt, I've seen some really really fringe far left ideas that are just absurd being paraded in NeoGAF like they were generally accepted views held by the userbase. I refuse to accept that the groupthink was that bad, and I totally see a reason as to why you wouldn't even think to post about disagreeing- I just need to know one thing, are we talking a very small vocal minority? It just sounds like people just did not ever disagree to avoid getting immediately banned.
How many people just held their mouth shut? Genuinely asking.
The timeline is weird. Evilore posted years ago about being sexually aggressive with a girl in a club in Spain. Probably everybody knew about it, and there was active moderation to prevent it from being talked about. However, last week a girl posted a #metoo story about Evilore, and obviously things went to hell real fast.
I don't think the mod drop off was from shock, for one thing because they obviously knew about the Europe stuff. More significantly, Evilore was not a frequent contributor to the site, and it's my speculation that there was some resentment among the mods around a couple of his recent intrusions into moderation policy, namely the firing of bishoptl. This was convenient, and consistent with site standards. Largely because he was so hands-off (rimshot) with the site, demanding his resignation was very low stakes. Most members wanted him gone because it seemed his only contribution was this terrible mess that made everybody look hypocritical.
With regard to your last point, yeah, a lot of people just didn't engage in those discussions. You know, just like heated political discussions in real life. It was worth it for all the excellent discussion elsewhere. NeoGAF was an amazing place.

It's awful.
I've never really posted on GAF much. There are a lot of reasons which almost all have to do EL. I really disliked him and he seem to active target thing I like.
But even with my problems I think its really funny how people keep talk about how hate Gaf. Like even if you hated it wish it gone its the definition of cut off your nose to spite the face. The only sites I know of that was heavily use as marketing beside Gaf was social media. I know "Facebook and Youtube is bigger than Gaf was" that true but bothof those site actively funnel user into smaller and smaller groups. Twitter isn't better. Its going to be harder for indie to find a larger audience, except for the one who already had one.
This won't affect me overtly. I like it here. Its really aesthetically pleasing to me and I'm sure I can get any news I need. But Gaf was a homepage for a lot people. Member or Not, Like or Not, Customer or Not. It affect a lot of thing, not just in gaming. But gaming was the biggest.
I could really just state my third sentence over and over again. I really don't like Evilore. I kind wish I could have siad all that before Gaf was taken down. Like I spend an hour rant about him. It seem like moore and more keep coming out. And it all sound the same. He selfish and I really trying not just explode and keep it expletive free. But the more I type the more I realise how much game I like a lot relied on Gaf the more mad I get. I've written this like four times already its just keep devolving in to disgust. He everything wrong thing I hate about both Geek culture and Human culture. False Male Posturing with nothing real to back it up. He only had his money that didn't seem make up for the inadequacy he obvious felt, if all of the thing I learn in the past few days are to be believed.

ResetEra should have an appeals process or something of the like if you are banned; maybe that would reduce some tensions?

If I might be so bold, there was no communism/Marxism on GAF, at least no threads dedicated to it. On the other hand, 4chan is known for pictures of dead minorities, doxxing threads, and questionably legal pornography, so the idea that both have their āvicesā is really misguided at best and disingenuous at worst.
Racism really isnāt an opinion that needs to be aired and discussed, it is the bad behavior that as you say should be ādiscouragedā and in generally every professional venue in America tends to be met with severe consequences.

By Enter The Noid Go To Post3. It depends on what you feel was "far-left" about GAF, most users were pretty standard centerish-left standard liberals. There weren't a lot of true leftists or what have you on there. There were some that had a tendency to derail threads and others who had some silly Tumblr-esque ideas (and they've been named ITT) but they were a small minority.
This is exactly what my suspicions lead me to believe. I could not believe that there was this much support over some pretty fringe ideas that I have never seen in real life, and I live in a liberal east coast state.
I know I have a lot of negative eyes on me right now, but I actually empathize with you guys. You had a huge community that only tried to do good by implementing strict rules to help ensure that everyone has a pleasant experience.
What went wrong was that this system was abused and taken way past the overton window of acceptability in society slowly over time. As less people began to voice their disagreement, the small vocal minority took complete control by silencing anyone who disagreed or was considered "offensive" by a select few of essentially omnipotent users.
Just food for thought, but again, I'm sorry you lost your home site. I'd be bummed if that happened to me, and I do sympathize with your loss.

I'm just going to answer it good faith since this is a new forum. New forum, new people, new start.
1. Technically this starts back in 2012 when EL was bragging about grabbing a girls ass at a party in Spain. This sort of flew under the radar for most people since he and the mods banned anyone who was giving him shit for it. Then in the summer you had that whole Amir0x pedo incident where EL swore he didn't actually know him despite the fact that he donated 1K to Amir0x's crowdfunding initiative for his mother. Once again, there were a lot of bans for accounts that called EL and the mod team out for trying to seemingly bury the story. Despite this, things quieted down until this Saturday, the lady EL made a move on told how he entered the shower with her naked. Apparently he gave a really shitty excuse for his actions to the mod team and they pretty much resigned in mass, which resulted in more and more people creating threads about it. Either way, by Saturday night there was no moderation and the site was going to shitposting hell, not to mention unstable as fuck. Pretty sure EL shut down the site by midnight and it's been that way ever since. Also Evilore (or Modbot, whatever) stated that a statement was coming but nearly 40 hours later there is still no statement.
2. While i'm pretty sure not all mods knew, I definitely know that a few knew about the Spain incident and were complicit in covering them up. They gave the excuse that they liked the community and wanted to keep it, but whatever. I'm pretty sure none of the staff knew about the shower incident. In any case, there was definitely some skeevy stuff going on with a few of the mods. A couple were pretty chill and nice, but you got a few mods that clearly had an agenda and banned people they disagreed with one the flimsiest of excuses. Keep in mind this isn't just politics. There are stories of mods ranging across the anime, NBA, gaming, and other sections who clearly played favorites. I believe there also may be screenshots (can't find them now) of one of the mods admitting that they were looking to ban certain posters.
3. GAF was definitely left leaning, but I would say it wasn't as extreme as most places portray. I mean, I would definitely agree that there were specific posters that would fit the "SJW" mold that people love to complain about, and that ever since the election it has become more and more of an echo chamber, but I distinctly recall that there was quite a divide between the more center left leaning posters and the full on leftwing posters, especially during the primaries.
I mean, I know I'm criticizing the site, but don't think that I'm happy its gone. It had some fantastic communities for a wide variety of interests. I'll get over it, but I guess its back to /a/ and /vg/ now for my more game related interests.
