There are other ways to pressure someone to play.
Celtics gonna still be a 1-3 seed in the East, this injury potentially pushes the development of Juice, Tatum, and Semi along before they expected, I'm still devastated, but I'm interested how they'll play and how Kyrie fits.
Also I'm realizing that people don't understand how much Zach and Tony meant to Memphis, like, they saved Memphis basketball. Marc and Mike are the two best players that franchise has seen, but living in Memphis my whole life, ZBO and TA are Memphis personified.

"If you can't go, we understand, but it'll impact our decision going forward for your contract extension because it feels like you're not committed to the Celtics franchise long-term."
this pitino interview gonna be great. i can feel it now
By Wengward Go To PostThere are other ways to pressure someone to play.yeah - and with the ways the cap works in the NBA, they simply couldn't extend him prior to this free agency period really - other stars looking to be brought in would have to have their contracts structured around his extension ahead of time
By s y Go To PostY'all can run around and play retrospective all you want.
There were a ton of articles going around discussing whether it is a smart idea to give IT2 a max regardless of his injury. And Boston was reluctant to do it before the injury.
This isn't some perennial all star.
This was a guy who was in his prime, having a contract year, elevated his play to another level, and got an injury. Decided to play through it to try and force a reluctant team to give him a Max contract. Playing through it was a gamble, it made the injury worse, the gamble back fired partly, his level or play was still amazing while he was playing.
It's nice to walk around and say that Boston should have given him a max and allowed him to sit. Hypothetically, they could. Is that in the best interest of the team? Not really. If IT2 never really recovers from it, and Ainge gave him that Max, we'd all be sitting around clowning Ainge. Danny Ainge is the Boston Celtics GM not the Isaiah Thomas GM.

Is there anywhere suggesting that conversation happened? IT2 never said it. And he hasn't held back about previous franchises.
The amount of retrospective blame shifting here is literally amazing.

I love that people are acting like IT2 was so brilliant that he should have got a max and everyone in the league would have given it to him, it was a lock.
But sitting 6 weeks while injured, would have prevented everyone else in the league from offering him the max.
The logical disconnect is astounding.
There's a reason he took the gamble to keep playing.

By reilo Go To PostYou serious? Why are you taking him seriously?
A fan of a team who misused IT in a failed three guard system has a salty point of view on him. He was an asset to be treated like shit back then, and he's just another asset now. Why expect anything better from a jaded Phoenix fan?

Yesterday was a really bad look, watching the game muted and not expressing my disdain for Ainge yet. No excuse to have Hayward spite Ainge in that situation so I want to apologize for that SL&ENT, a bad mental lapse. No player should ever have to go through any kind of career threatening injury and I am glad that the diagnosis is positive.
But in regards to Ainge, fuck him. The team's success that year, and the years prior, were a culmination of Brad Stevens being an outstanding coach, and IT carrying a scoring anemic team to where they were. As well as the contributions of Avery Bradley and others who helped create the culture.
For everything that IT went through that year, losing his only sister, being injured and given the green light by the organization to play to the point where his career can be in jeopardy right now, to being a big part in recruiting Gordon Hayward to Boston in the first place, and everything he gave to the city.
His service to the city and affected communities, how he showed up every single day despite diversity, doing every single thing he can to give and improve the team and the city. Dude was there for Gordon Hayward last night. A player so beloved to the city, heartlessly sent off. Ainge fucked with his health, he fucked with his paycheck as a result of the former, and he did not even have the heart or spine to sit down with Isaiah Thomas and let know about the situation or the direction the team was going in, instead shipping him off without a single word. Thomas was a big part in creating the team culture. It is hypocrisy to keep talking about culture and the team when you cut off some of the most important people behind it.
It's why I was so fucking pissed off when I found out that Lacob tried to cheap his way out and not pay Curry the max. A player so loved by the Bay Area who had his career put in jeopardy multiple times because of an injury, came back from it and selflessly gave everything to the team. He sacrificed more than anyone else for Golden State, and the dude had the audacity to think it is okay to underpay or cut corners?
Why should front offices be given the benefit of the doubt because it's a business? Fuck that, it's a business noise. Part of being a boss, a business, isn't just expecting your players to show up and do their job every day. You're also their caretaker, you pay them, you talk to them and help them when they have issues. Forget about the money at this point, it is about being a decent human being and the relationships you have. It can't always happen, sitting down and letting players know, but for the most important people in the community and in the team, you sit down and let them know what is going on. You be transparent and work out a good home for Isaiah. You don't keep quiet and cut him off from the family for everything he did for them.
With all the options Ainge had available to him in the offseason, potentially getting 2 of Hayward, George, or Butler, and having blueballs the entire time, he doesn't deserve any kind of benefit of the doubt for his shitty decisions.
