We teach Of Mice & Men to Year 7s (so 11/12) and they're really quite mature about using it, because it's sprinkled throughout that book quite liberally. They just say it in context, they understand why its used, they understand why its bad.

The fact that people nowadays from marginalized and poor communities call each other that, even regardless of their color skin (for example some poor, uneducated, white Rosarino kid calling his friends negritos without full realization or consciousness of history of the word) doesn't negate the past and context, and any person with a modicum of decency and education should understand that. Not sure why Elsk is so averse to obvious facts.
